Kuta Lombok Beach
Best for. Travellers who want a lively, well connected base with cafes, surf and the island's main clubs within reach of the headline bays.
Best spot. Mandala Beach Club for a pool day in town, then the short drive east or west to Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak for the swim.
Know this. The town beach photographs flatter than it feels underfoot, so treat Kuta as the launch pad and swim elsewhere.
Kuta Lombok is the south coast's base camp, and it is worth being clear eyed about what that means. This is a small, low rise surf town, the hub of the wider Mandalika area, where the cafes, the stays, the surf schools and the island's main beach clubs all gather. It is the easiest place to sleep, eat and organise a day on this coast, and for that it is genuinely useful. What it is not is a beach in its own right. Do not confuse it with its famous namesake in Bali either, since this Kuta is quieter, lower and far less built up.
The honest read is that the town beach photographs flatter than it feels underfoot. From a distance, or through a drone, the wide pale sweep of sand with the fishing boats drawn up and the green hills behind looks the part. Walk it at eye level and the truth is plainer. This is a working shore, the sand is coarser and patchier than the postcard bays nearby, and the swimming is no better than ordinary. The gap between the picture and the reality is wider here than anywhere else on the coast, and pretending otherwise does no one any favours.
So use Kuta for what it is good at. Sleep here, eat here, sort your surf and your scooter here, and take the short drives that the town exists to enable. Tanjung Aan and the Merese viewpoint are minutes east, Mawun and Selong Belanak minutes west, and the surf breaks ring the peninsula. In town itself, Mandala Beach Club is the one place that delivers a proper pool and party day, the closest Lombok comes to a Bali style club. Treat the town beach as the launch pad and the clubs as the evening, and Kuta earns its place.

The closest Lombok comes to a full Bali style club day, with a large pool area, daybeds, a broad food and cocktail menu and a resident DJ setting the pace in the heart of the southern resort town. The pick for a social day in the water with music and a crowd. Day use and any minimum spend are to be confirmed.
Town cafes and warungs
Kuta town backs the beach with the widest choice of cafes, warungs and restaurants on the coast, from breakfast spots to evening grills. It is the easy, varied way to eat and drink between beach runs, and the reason the town works so well as a base.
South coast, Lombok
Kuta Lombok is about fifteen to twenty minutes from Lombok International Airport by car or taxi, which makes it the most easily reached base on the south coast. The town is compact and walkable, with the beach, the cafes and the clubs all close together.
There is little public transport, so a scooter or a hired car is the way to reach the bays and breaks around town once you arrive. Tanjung Aan and the Merese viewpoint sit minutes east, Mawun and Selong Belanak minutes west, all on easy day trips from here.
