The best beach clubs in Asia

Asia does the beach club in three dialects: the design led sunset temples of Bali, the high energy day parties of Phuket, and the polished resort lounges of the Thai islands. These are the clubs worth planning a day around, ranked, each with the honest word and how to get a daybed.

The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want the daybed, the long lunch and the sunset done properly, and would rather plan the day around the club than treat it as a backup.
  • The pick. Potato Head in Seminyak for design and sunset, Finns in Canggu for a big group day, and Catch in Phuket for the dressed up scene.
  • The one thing to know. Almost none of these publish a flat entry price. You pay through a daybed rate or a food and drink minimum that climbs steeply in high season, so confirm the terms before you commit.
The brief

Why these made the list

The Asian beach club grew up fast. A decade ago the choice was a sun lounger and a warm beer; now Bali alone has more polished clubs than most countries, and Phuket and the Thai islands are not far behind. At the top end the sand is almost secondary. What you are paying for is the pool, the music, the kitchen and the angle of the sunset.

We have ranked the clubs that travellers actually cross the region for, and kept the verdicts honest. Several are glorious in the late afternoon and a crush by mid evening, a few are calmer than their reputation suggests, and most are not cheap. Where a club has tipped from stylish to overrun we say so, and we never invent a price or an amenity we cannot confirm.

The best beach clubs in Asia, in order

Potato Head Beach Club

Bali's most photographed club wraps a wall of reclaimed window shutters around lawns, an infinity pool and the open Indian Ocean horizon, and it has built genuine sustainability into the whole site. Verdict: the most stylish club on the island and a true sunset institution, busy but worth it. Arrive in the afternoon for a daybed and stay for the sky.

Finns Beach Club

The big, exuberant crowd pleaser of Canggu, with stacked infinity pools over the break, swim up bars and a friendly roar that grows toward dusk. Verdict: the most fun for a group or a celebration, less refined than its rivals and all the better for it. Book a daybed in high season and time arrival for the famous sunset over the surf.

Catch Beach Club

Phuket's most polished beach club sits on the broad sweep of Bang Tao, all white daybeds, a serious kitchen and a smart evening crowd. Verdict: the place to dress up for on the island, livelier and glossier than the laid back south, with minimums that climb on weekends. Book a bed ahead and come for golden hour into dinner.

Nikki Beach

On the quiet western shore at Lipa Noi, Nikki Beach brings its signature white daybeds, pool and Sunday brunch theatre to one of Samui's prime sunset stretches. Verdict: the most reliable scene on a fairly sleepy island, polished and pricey, best on a brunch or sunset day. Reserve a bed and check the current minimum spend, which is to be confirmed by date.

Sundara

Sundara runs a sleek infinity pool right along the gentle curve of Jimbaran Bay, with cabanas on the sand and a kitchen pitched at the resort crowd. Verdict: the most grown up and serene of Bali's name clubs, ideal for couples who want calm water and space rather than a party. Book a daybed for the day and stay through the bay's soft sunset.

Cafe del Mar

Cafe del Mar brought its Balearic name to Kamala, building a vast pool, tiered daybeds and a sundown soundtrack over the Andaman Sea. Verdict: Phuket's answer to a proper pool party, high energy on event days and easy the rest of the time, with daybed minimums that spike for big DJs. Book ahead for a bed and arrive before the sunset rush.

Mari Beach Club

One of Canggu's smarter newer arrivals, Mari leans Mediterranean with a soft palette, a generous pool and a more relaxed daytime rhythm than its rowdier neighbours. Verdict: a stylish middle ground for those who want design and a good lunch without the full party, busy at sunset like the whole coast. Reserve a daybed and come early for the calmest pool.

Ku De Ta

The club that taught Bali how to do sunset, Ku De Ta still commands a prime stretch of Seminyak sand with lawns, daybeds and a deep cocktail list. Verdict: the elder statesman, a touch less fashionable than the newcomers but with the best sand position of any of them, and a sunset that never disappoints. Book a beanbag or table and settle in for dusk.

Tropicola

Tropicola trades the open ocean view for a playful retro Miami look, all pink stripes, tall palms and a photogenic pool a short walk from the sand. Verdict: the most fun for a daytime pool scene and a younger crowd, less about the sunset than the setting, with a daybed minimum at peak times. Book a bed, come for the pool, and walk to the beach for dusk.

Xana Beach Club

Xana sits on the same generous Bang Tao sand as its smarter neighbour but pitches younger and louder, with a big pool, beach daybeds and frequent DJ nights. Verdict: the spot for an all out beach party day on Phuket, brilliant if that is the brief, with minimums and ticketed events on the biggest dates. Book a bed for space and pace yourself for a long one.

Honest notes

How to land a daybed, and what you actually pay

The single biggest mistake people make at Asian beach clubs is turning up for sunset without a reservation. From roughly an hour before dusk the prime clubs in Bali and Phuket fill completely, and a daybed you could have held with a deposit at lunchtime is simply gone. Book ahead, arrive in the afternoon, and you get the pool, the lunch and the sunset rather than a scramble for a standing spot.

How you pay varies and it pays to ask first. Some clubs charge a flat daybed or cabana rate, others run a food and drink minimum that you spend down across the day, and the figure climbs sharply in July, August and over the new year peak. We never quote a number we cannot confirm, so where a current minimum is unclear we mark it to be confirmed and suggest you check directly when you reserve.

Match the club to the day you want. Potato Head, Sundara and Mari reward a calm, design led afternoon, while Finns, Cafe del Mar and Xana are built for a louder, younger party. Sunset is the universal currency here, so whichever you choose, plan your arrival around the light rather than the lunch and you will see the place at its best.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Which is the best beach club in Asia?

For most travellers Potato Head in Seminyak is the one to beat, combining a landmark design, a true infinity pool and one of Bali's great sunsets. Finns in Canggu wins for a big group day out, and Catch in Phuket is the pick if you want a dressed up scene. The best one for you depends on whether you want calm and stylish or loud and lively.

Do Asian beach clubs charge an entry fee?

It varies by club and by day. Many do not charge a simple door price but instead ask for a daybed or cabana rate, or a minimum spend on food and drink that you use across your visit. These rise steeply in high season and for big DJ events, so the honest advice is to confirm the current terms when you reserve rather than assume.

Do I need to book a daybed in advance?

In high season, yes, especially for sunset. The prime clubs in Bali and Phuket fill from late afternoon, and walking up at golden hour often means no bed and a long wait. Reserving ahead, usually with a deposit or minimum spend, secures your spot and lets you enjoy the lunch and the light rather than queue for them.

When is the best time of day to visit?

Late afternoon into sunset is the headline moment at almost every club on this list, when the pools glow and the music builds. If you want the calmest pool and the quietest service, arrive around lunchtime and hold your bed through the afternoon. That way you get the best of both the relaxed daytime and the sunset peak.

Are these clubs good for families or couples?

Some are far better suited than others. Sundara in Jimbaran and Mari in Canggu lean calm and work well for couples and quieter days, while Finns, Cafe del Mar and Xana are party focused and can be loud for young children. Check each club's vibe before booking, and aim for the calmer, earlier part of the day with family in tow.
