The verdict

Best for. Surfers of every level and travellers who love an atmospheric working bay of fishing boats and seaweed lines over a sunbathing beach.

Best spot. A jukung boat out to Inside Gerupuk at first light, then a coffee at a warung watching the village wake.

Know this. This is a surfers' bay, not a swim or sunbathe beach, so for soft sand and a paddle head to Tanjung Aan or Mawun nearby.

Sand
Narrow, working shore
A narrow village shore lined with jukung rather than a wide strand, with seaweed drying and boats hauled up on the sand.
Water
A surf bay, boat access
A large sheltered inlet with several breaks out toward the mouth, reached by boat, not a calm spot for a casual swim.
Entry
Free
The bay and village are public, with informal parking near the warungs and a per person fee for the boat to the breaks.
Facilities
Surf camps and warungs
Surf schools, board hire, local boatmen and simple warungs for coffee and plates, all geared around the waves.
Lifeguard
None, to be confirmed
There is no lifeguard, so surf with a local guide, agree your boat pickup and treat conditions as typical, not guaranteed.
Best months
May to September
The dry season brings cleaner conditions and steadier wind, though the bay catches swell across much of the year.
The honest read

Gerupuk is one of the most photogenic places on the south coast, and almost none of that has to do with sand. The picture here is a working bay. Wooden jukung in faded reds and blues hauled up the narrow shore, lines of seaweed drying in the sun, nets and floats and the slow choreography of a fishing village that also happens to surf. The light off the water in the early morning, before the wind picks up, turns the whole inlet silver, and the boats throw it back in long ribbons. If you have an eye for texture and colour over postcard turquoise, Gerupuk gives you more to look at than a far prettier beach.

What it is not, and this matters, is a beach in the sunbathing sense. The shore is narrow and busy with boats and seaweed, the water near the village is not the place for a casual swim, and anyone arriving with a towel and a paperback will be puzzled. Gerupuk earns its name out on the water. The bay is large and sheltered and holds several named breaks, with Inside Gerupuk and Don Don the gentler, forgiving waves that the schools use to teach, and Outside the bigger, shiftier wave for those who know what they are doing. Local fishermen run you out to the lineup in their boats, and that short crossing, threading between the seaweed plots with the village shrinking behind you, is half the pleasure.

So read Gerupuk for what it is and it rarely disappoints. Come to surf, whether your first lesson or a serious session, or come simply to stand on the shore at dawn and watch the bay go about its work. Take a boat out even if you do not surf, just to see the inlet from the water. Then, when you want soft sand and a swim, drive the short distance to Tanjung Aan or Mawun, which are made for exactly that. Used as a surf and atmosphere bay paired with a swimming beach nearby, Gerupuk is one of the richest stops on the Mandalika coast.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Boat hire to the breaks

Jukung boat hire and warungs

The scene at Gerupuk is the boatmen and the surf camps. Local fishermen run jukung out to the breaks for a set fee, and simple warungs on the shore handle coffee, plates and the wait between sets. It is the working heart of the bay rather than a club. Prices and hours are to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

Mandalika coast, Lombok

Gerupuk sits east of Kuta on the Mandalika coast, around fifteen to twenty minutes by scooter or car along the coast road through the village of Bumbang. There is no public transport, so ride, drive or arrange a transfer through a surf camp. Park near the warungs at the shore, and arrange your boat and guide there for the run out to the breaks.

Come early for the calmest water and the best light, agree your boat fee and pickup time before you set off, and bring sun cover and water since shade is limited. Treat the seaweed plots with care and follow the boatmen's line through them. Pair Gerupuk with Tanjung Aan and Mawun nearby for a swim once the surf is done.

Common questions about Gerupuk

Where is Gerupuk in Lombok?

Gerupuk is a bay and fishing village on the south coast of Lombok, around fifteen to twenty minutes east of Kuta by scooter or car. It is a large sheltered inlet rather than a single beach, with the village on the shore and the surf breaks out toward the mouth of the bay.

Is Gerupuk good for beginner surfers?

Yes, Gerupuk is one of the friendlier places to learn in Lombok. The bay holds several breaks for different levels, with Inside Gerupuk and Don Don the gentler waves favoured by schools, and bigger, shiftier waves at Outside for the experienced. Conditions vary with the swell and are typical and never guaranteed, so go with a local guide.

How do you get to the surf breaks at Gerupuk?

The breaks sit offshore, so local fishermen run small wooden boats, the jukung, out to the lineup and back for a set fee per person. Boats run from sunrise to sunset, and the early morning is usually calmest before the wind builds. Agree the price and the pickup time before you set off.

Can you swim or sunbathe at Gerupuk?

Not really, and that is the honest read. Gerupuk is a working surf and fishing bay with seaweed farming and a narrow shore, not a sunbathing beach. Come to surf, to take a boat out or to soak up the atmosphere of the village, and head to Tanjung Aan or Mawun nearby if you want a swim and soft sand.

What is the best time of year to surf Gerupuk?

Gerupuk works across much of the year because the bay catches swell from different directions, which is part of its appeal. The dry season from roughly May to September brings cleaner conditions and more reliable wind, while the wet months can still deliver good days. Check a forecast and a local guide before you commit.
