A naturalist comes to Koh Phangan for a different island than the one the posters sell. Forget the full moon for a moment, because the quieter truth of this place is a northwest coast of sheltered bays and fringing reef where the snorkelling is genuinely good, far from the noise of the party beaches in the south. Choose your shore with care and the Gulf of Thailand here rewards you with clear, warm water and living coral within a short swim of the sand.

The jewel is Koh Ma, a small island joined to the beach of Haad Mae Haad by a pale sandbar at the northwest tip, set inside a protected marine area. You walk in from the sand and follow the reef around the islet, drifting over hard and soft coral with parrotfish, butterflyfish, wrasse and the flicker of damselfish among the heads. It is the best shore snorkel on the island by a clear margin, and on a calm morning before the wind it is a quiet wonder.

The same coast holds more. Haad Salad and Haad Yao, just south of Mae Haad, have their own fringing reef within an easy swim, and the sheltered northern bays around Chaloklum and the little cove of Haad Khom keep clearer water than the exposed and crowded south. These are working, lived in beaches rather than untouched ones, but the reef is real and the snorkelling honest, which is more than the famous southern sands can say.

Wherever you go in, tread lightly, because reef this far north in the Gulf is precious and slow to heal. Wear a rash vest or a reef safe sunscreen rather than the chemical kind, never touch, stand on or kick the coral, and keep your distance from the turtles and fish. We have ranked the six best below, each linked to its full guide, with the living northwest reefs at the top and the party beach kept honestly in its place.

Ranked by reef and clarity

Six of the best snorkelling beaches in Koh Phangan

The northwest reefs first, the party beach last.

01
Mae Haad

Haad Mae Haad

The northwest beach with the island's signature sandbar curling out to little Koh Ma, a protected reef you snorkel straight from the shore. Walk the sandbar at lower tide, slip in along the islet, and follow hard and soft coral alive with reef fish. This is the best and most reliable shore snorkel on Koh Phangan, calm and sheltered, and lovely on a still morning before the day boats arrive.

02
Haad Salad

Haad Salad

A pretty, sheltered northwest bay with a band of fringing reef at its northern end, within an easy swim of the sand. The water is calm and clear in the right season, and the coral holds a good scatter of reef fish, which makes this a relaxed and rewarding snorkel away from the crowds. A handful of low key bars and kitchens behind the sand make it an easy base for a reef day.

03
Haad Yao

Haad Yao

A long, easygoing west coast beach with coral reef off its ends, gentle entry and clear water that suit a casual snorkel and beginners alike. The reef is not as rich as Koh Ma, but the calm and the space make it a comfortable place to drift and look, with fish working the coral heads at either tip. Plenty of facilities behind the sand make it a practical family choice.

04
Haad Khom

Haad Khom

A small, quiet cove tucked beside Chaloklum bay in the north, with a patch of coral reef close to shore and notably clear, calm water. It is a steep little walk in for some access, which keeps numbers down, and the sheltered aspect holds visibility well. A peaceful, low key choice for snorkellers who want a cove largely to themselves.

05
Chaloklum

Chaloklum Beach

A working fishing village bay on the sheltered north coast, calmer and more local than the tourist beaches, with rocky headlands and patches of reef toward its edges. The bay itself is more about boats and seafood than coral, but the rocky points and the nearby coves reward a look, and it makes a characterful base for exploring the northern reefs. Snorkel the edges rather than the middle.

06
Haad Rin

Haad Rin

The island's famous party beach in the south, included honestly to manage expectations. It is a long, lively stretch of sand built for the full moon scene, with churned water and little coral, so there is very little to snorkel here. Enjoy it for the energy if that is your trip, then move to the northwest coast for the reef, the clarity and the quiet.

The honest read

Where the reef actually is on Koh Phangan

The honest read is that the beach Koh Phangan is famous for is the worst one for snorkelling. Haad Rin and the southern party coast are about the scene, not the sea floor, so a snorkeller who follows the crowds will be let down. The reef lives on the opposite corner of the island, in the sheltered northwest, and the short trip up there is the single best thing a snorkeller can do here.

Koh Ma off Haad Mae Haad is the answer for almost everyone, a protected reef you can reach on foot from the sand, with the most coral and the most fish on the island. Spread your days along the same coast to Haad Salad and Haad Yao for more fringing reef, and to the quiet northern coves of Haad Khom and the bays near Chaloklum for clear, calm water with hardly anyone about. A boat trip to the Ang Thong marine park or the dive site at Sail Rock adds deeper water, but the island's own reef is reward enough.

Timing and care decide your day. The calmest, clearest water generally runs from around February to September, while the late year monsoon stirs the sea and drops visibility, and mornings before the wind are always best. The reef here is fragile and slowly recovering, so wear a rash vest or reef safe sunscreen, never touch or stand on the coral, give the turtles and fish room, and treat the sea and tide as typical rather than guaranteed, checking the day before you go in.

The club layer

Beach clubs, calm water and a base for the day

The best snorkelling beaches here are simple, reef fringed bays, so many travellers pair a morning over the coral with a comfortable base for the afternoon. The beach clubs, bar terraces and seafront kitchens along the west and northwest coast rent loungers, shade and a meal behind calm water, which makes an easy spot to dry off between snorkels. Operators, opening hours and any minimum spend vary with the season, so we keep the live list on the directory. Good questions

Before you go

Where is the best snorkelling on Koh Phangan?

Koh Ma, the little island joined to Haad Mae Haad by a sandbar at the northwest tip, holds the island's best reef and is a protected marine area. From the shore you can snorkel straight out over hard and soft coral with reef fish in good numbers. Haad Salad and Haad Yao nearby have fringing reef of their own, which makes the northwest coast the place to base yourself for snorkelling.

Is Haad Rin good for snorkelling?

Not really. Haad Rin is the island's party beach, a long, busy stretch of sand with churned water and little coral, so it is the wrong choice if marine life is your aim. Enjoy it for the scene if that is what you want, then head to the northwest coast around Koh Ma, Haad Salad and Haad Yao for the reef and the clear water.

Can you snorkel from the beach on Koh Phangan?

Yes, the best spots are shore snorkels rather than boat trips. At Koh Ma you walk in from Haad Mae Haad and follow the reef around the islet, and Haad Salad and Haad Yao have coral within an easy swim of the sand. A boat day out to the Ang Thong marine park or to Sail Rock adds deeper water, but you do not need one to see the island's reef.

When is the best time to snorkel on Koh Phangan?

The calmest, clearest water is generally from around February to September, while the northeast monsoon late in the year stirs the sea and lowers visibility, especially on exposed coasts. Mornings before the wind are best, and the sheltered northwest bays hold their clarity longest. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so always check the day and the tide before you go in.

Is the coral on Koh Phangan healthy?

The reefs around Koh Ma and the northwest coast are among the healthier patches in the Gulf, helped by their protected status, though like all reefs they are sensitive to warming, sunscreen chemicals and careless fins. Wear a reef safe sunscreen or a rash vest, never touch or stand on the coral, and keep your distance from the fish so this fragile life keeps recovering and growing.
