Haad Rin Beach
Best for. Travellers here for the Full Moon Party and the nightlife, who want a lively, sociable base for one big night rather than a quiet, beautiful swim.
Best spot. The wide curve of Sunrise Beach at dawn, the morning after the crowds have gone, when the sand is briefly calm and the light is soft over the bay.
Know this. This is the most overrated beach on the island for nature, so come for the party, then head north to Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach or Haad Yuan for the genuinely wild sand.
Haad Rin is two beaches and one reputation. The reputation is the Full Moon Party, the monthly all night gathering on Sunrise Beach that put Koh Phangan on the backpacker map and still draws a vast crowd to the sand at the island's southern tip. On party night the beach is a wall of sound, fire shows and buckets, electric and chaotic and, for the right traveller, a genuine spectacle. The two bays sit back to back across a narrow neck of land, Sunrise Beach facing east to catch the dawn and Sunset Beach facing west toward Koh Samui, a short walk between them.
The honest catch is that the beach lives for the night and shows it by day. Sunrise Beach is a genuinely wide, pretty sweep of pale sand, and on a calm morning it can be lovely, but the strip behind it is built entirely around the party, so it can feel worn, hungover and half asleep between events, with litter on the sand the morning after a big night. Sunset Beach is quieter but shallow and weedy at low tide, more a sundowner spot than a swim. None of this makes Haad Rin a bad place. It makes it a nightlife beach that happens to have sand, rather than a beautiful beach that happens to have a bar.
For a naturalist, the verdict is simple. Haad Rin is the most overrated beach on Koh Phangan if you came for wild, clean nature, because everything that makes the rest of the island special, the quiet, the clear water, the jungle backed coves, is exactly what the party coast lacks. The good news is that escape is easy. The wild north and east are an hour away, and the smart plan is to dip into Haad Rin for the one night you want the party, then base yourself at Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach or Haad Yuan, where the real Koh Phangan waits.
Bars and the party strip
Haad Rin has no glossy daybed beach club. What it has is the densest run of beach bars on the island, built around the Full Moon Party. We name what is here honestly and mark anything we cannot verify as to be confirmed. To plan a lounger or table elsewhere on the island, start with the Koh Phangan clubs guide.

The social heart of Haad Rin, a tight run of beachfront bars and lounges along Sunrise Beach that fills the sand with music, fire shows and loungers, and turns into the Full Moon Party once a month. It is a strip of independent venues rather than a single club, so individual bars, hours and any cover charge are to be confirmed.

The quieter bay, Haad Rin Nai, has a scatter of low key bars and restaurants facing west across to Koh Samui, the place for a calmer sundowner away from the party energy of the Sunrise side. The water is shallow and weedy at low tide, so this is a drink and a view rather than a swim. Venues and hours are to be confirmed.
Hostel and resort bars
The hostels and small resorts behind the two beaches run their own bars and pool decks, mostly for guests, some open to walk in visitors for a drink. This is the closest Haad Rin comes to a lounge away from the open sand. Access, any minimum spend and current openings change often and are to be confirmed with each property.
Southern tip, Koh Phangan
Haad Rin sits at the southern tip of Koh Phangan, on a small headland with a bay on each side. Many travellers arrive by ferry direct from Koh Samui into Haad Rin pier, while from the island's main pier at Thong Sala it is about twenty five minutes by road or songthaew over a steep, winding hill that is best not driven by a nervous scooter rider.
On Full Moon Party nights extra boats and transport run from across the island and from Samui, and the village fills accordingly. Bring cash, sun cover and water, keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds, and if you want a quiet beach the next day, plan your trip north to Thong Nai Pan or the boats to Bottle Beach. Conditions and transport are busiest around the full moon.

Common questions about Haad Rin
Is Haad Rin worth visiting outside the Full Moon Party?
For the beach itself, only modestly. Sunrise Beach is a wide, pretty sweep of sand and the swimming is fine on a calm day, but the strip is built entirely around the party, so it can feel worn and quiet between events. If you want a beautiful, wild swim, the north and east coves at Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach and Haad Yuan are far better. Come to Haad Rin for the night, not the day.
What is the difference between the two Haad Rin beaches?
Haad Rin has two back to back bays. Sunrise Beach, or Haad Rin Nok, faces east, is the wider and prettier of the two and hosts the Full Moon Party. Sunset Beach, or Haad Rin Nai, faces west across to Koh Samui, is shallower and weedier at low tide and quieter, with the better sunset. The two are a short walk apart across the narrow neck of the headland.
When is the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin?
The Full Moon Party runs roughly once a month on or around the full moon, all year, on Sunrise Beach at Haad Rin. Dates follow the lunar calendar and shift slightly for some Buddhist holidays, so check locally before you plan around one. The beach fills with a large crowd on party night and is much quieter the rest of the month. Dates are set locally and to be confirmed.
Can you swim at Haad Rin?
Yes on a calm day, mainly at Sunrise Beach, which has the cleaner water and a gentle slope, though it can be littered and crowded around party nights. Sunset Beach is shallow and weedy at low tide and less pleasant for swimming. Conditions vary with the tide and the season and are never guaranteed, so check locally, swim within your depth and avoid the water around the busiest party hours.
How do you get to Haad Rin?
Haad Rin sits at the southern tip of Koh Phangan. Most people arrive by ferry from Koh Samui directly into Haad Rin pier, or take the road or a songthaew from the main pier at Thong Sala, about twenty five minutes away over a steep hill. On party nights extra boats and transport run from across the island and from Samui. Roads and boats are busiest around the full moon.
Where should I go instead of Haad Rin for a quiet beach?
Head north and east. Thong Nai Pan offers the prettiest road accessible swimming, Bottle Beach the wildest boat access sand, and Haad Yuan a quiet east coast cove with the island's wellness scene. Any of these gives the clear water and calm that Haad Rin lacks by day, and you can still pop back for one party night if you want both sides of the island.
