Sunset Beach is the quiet counterweight to the rest of Koh Lipe, and if you want the island at its most peaceful this is where you go. It sits on the west side, the smallest and least developed of the three main beaches, so where Pattaya and Sunrise carry the bars, the boats and the bustle, Sunset keeps only a few small bungalows and a slow, easy mood. The name is no marketing flourish. The beach looks west across open water to the jungle covered silhouette of Koh Adang, which gives it the finest sunset seat on an island that is not short of them.
What surprises people is how much there is to do here beyond the sundown. Because the boats keep away, the reef among the rocks is in good shape, particularly at the southern end at high tide, and it is one of the better beaches on Koh Lipe for snorkeling straight from the sand, with tropical fish in numbers and the odd turtle drifting through. You can pick your way part of the way out along the rocks and slip in beside the coral, which makes it easy to reach even without a boat. Between snorkel and sunset, a relaxed bungalow bar with your feet in the sand is the whole agenda.
The honest notes are about scale and access, not quality. Sunset Beach is on the west side of Koh Lipe, a short hop across the small island. The easiest route is a walk of ten to fifteen minutes west from Walking Street along the main road, or you can follow the coast around from Sunrise Beach, which has some rocks to climb depending on the tide. A moto taxi will run you across for a small flat fee if you would rather not walk, and longtail boats leave from here for Koh Adang.
