Karma Beach is less a beach in its own right than the reward for walking to the very end of Sunrise. Where the main strip is lined with resorts, dive shops and long tail boats loading day trippers, the sand keeps narrowing north until it curls into a pale sandbar pointing across the channel at the green wall of Koh Adang. This is the quiet Koh Lipe that people fall for, the corner where the crowd thins, the water goes glassy over sand, and the island opposite looms close enough to feel like you could swim to it. You cannot, and that is the first honest note, but as a place to escape the busy heart of Sunrise it is hard to beat.
Read the water the way any coastal local would. Right off the sand the shallows are calm and clear, perfect for wading and an easy swim, and children can splash safely at the edge on a settled morning. The trouble is the channel between Lipe and Koh Adang just beyond, which funnels a real current, so this is a beach to enjoy close in rather than one to strike out from. The best reef and fish life sit further offshore around Adang and the marine park islands, and the smart, safe way to see them is on a long tail snorkel tour rather than a hopeful paddle into moving water. Time it around a lower tide in the morning and the sandbar is at its widest and the water at its clearest, the whole scene at its best.
The other truth is that the sandbar is a living thing. It is built and shifted by tide, season and weather, so it can be a broad photogenic spit one week and a thin sliver the next, and at high water it shrinks to almost nothing. Do not come expecting a fixed postcard, come expecting a changeable natural feature and let the tide chart guide your timing. My habit here is simple: walk up from Sunrise in the early light, swim and laze on the quiet bank while the boats are still loading elsewhere, then wander back down the shore for a late breakfast at one of the Sunrise cafes before the day heats up. Quiet first, comfort a short walk away.
Beach bars a walk away
The Karma sandbar itself is bare, but Sunrise Beach behind it lines up the relaxed bars and resort restaurants that Koh Lipe does so well.
There is no beach club on the Karma sandbar, and that emptiness is exactly why you walk up here. For the scene, you drop back down Sunrise Beach, where a string of resorts and beach bars set out loungers and serve cold drinks, fresh seafood and sunset cocktails with the sand underfoot. Koh Lipe keeps its beach life friendly and low key rather than glossy, more barefoot bar than bottle service, which suits an island this small and this far out in the Andaman.

The north tip of Sunrise
Karma Beach is the far northern end of Sunrise Beach on Koh Lipe, reached simply by walking up the sand from the main Sunrise strip in ten to fifteen minutes. Koh Lipe itself is reached by ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara pier on the mainland or from nearby islands like Langkawi in season, landing you at Pattaya Beach where a national marine park fee is collected on arrival.
Come in the morning around a lower tide for the widest sandbar and clearest water, and carry your own water and sun cover since the tip is quiet and shaded only by the odd tree. Swim in the inshore shallows, keep clear of the channel current toward Koh Adang, and watch for long tail boats.
