Koh Lipe makes the timing question unusually clear cut, because it is a small remote island at the far south of the Thai Andaman, inside the Tarutao National Marine Park, reached only by boat. From November to April the southwest monsoon has gone, the sea turns calm and glassy, visibility is superb for snorkelling and diving, and the whole island is open and humming. From May to October the monsoon returns, the water stays warm but the seas get rough, and much of the island winds down.
That open and closed rhythm matters more here than weather alone. In the dry season speedboats run often from Pak Bara pier and seasonally from Koh Lanta, Phuket and Langkawi, resorts and restaurants are all trading, and the famous water lives up to the photographs. In the low season schedules thin, many smaller places shut, the marine park largely closes, and a rough crossing can be cancelled, which is a real consideration when the journey already involves a flight, a minivan and a boat.
So the practical advice is simple. Come in the dry months for the calm clear sea and the certainty that you can get there and back on schedule, accepting the peak crowds and prices around the holidays. The shoulder edges of November and April give you most of the dry season upside with a little more room. The water is warm all year, but in Koh Lipe the season decides far more than your tan. When each month earns its place
February. Koh Lipe close to its best, dry and sunny with the calmest, clearest water of the year and superb visibility for diving and snorkelling around the surrounding reefs. It is firmly peak season, so rooms and speedboats are busy and priced accordingly, but for the postcard Andaman this is the month.
April. The hot tail of the dry season, still largely calm and clear, with the Songkran water festival mid month and the first pre monsoon storms appearing late. Prices begin to soften after the New Year peak, making early April a good blend of fine sea conditions and a little more breathing room.
September. The low point, peak monsoon and the quietest the island gets, when many resorts close, the marine park largely shuts and speedboat services are at their thinnest. The sea is warm but rough and crossings can be cancelled, so unless you are committed to the solitude and flexible on dates, this is the month to avoid.
November. The reopening, as the monsoon clears, the seas settle and the resorts and boats come back online. It is quieter and better value than the festive peak that follows, with dry sunny spells returning, which makes it a smart early dry season pick for travellers who want the calm water without the crowds.
December. The dry season in full, calm clear water and reliable sunshine, peaceful in the first weeks and then packed over Christmas and New Year when prices spike. Book the holiday window far ahead, or aim for early December to enjoy the same fine conditions before the crowds land.

How do you get to Koh Lipe?
There is no airport on Koh Lipe. Most travellers fly to Hat Yai, and some to Trang, then take a minivan to Pak Bara pier and a speedboat across, which takes roughly an hour and a half in good conditions. In the dry season speedboats also run from Koh Lanta, Phuket and Langkawi in Malaysia. There is no jetty, so a long tail boat ferries you from the speedboat onto the beach, where a national park fee is collected.
How warm is the sea in Koh Lipe?
