The Gili Islands suit families far better than their party reputation suggests, as long as you pick the right island and ignore the loud southeast corner of Gili Trawangan. All three islands are free of cars and motorbikes, which is the single best thing about them for parents, since children can walk, cycle or ride a cidomo pony cart with no traffic to fear. The sand is white, the water is warm and clear, and every beach is free public sand, so the cost of a family day here is as low as you want to make it.
We have ranked the beaches for what matters with children rather than for looks. Calm, shallow, sheltered water comes first, then easy access from cheap accommodation and food, then space to settle without resort prices. Gili Air leads because it gives you the calmest value base, Gili Meno follows for quiet shallow shores, and the northwest of Gili Trawangan earns its place for space and swings even though it costs more.
One honest warning shapes everything below. There are no lifeguards on the Gilis, much of the shoreline is dead coral rubble rather than soft sand, and the tides genuinely matter, since at low water the reef flats can be too shallow and sharp to swim. Bring cheap water shoes for every child, plan swims around higher tide, and you turn a tricky coral coast into an easy and very affordable family week.
The family beaches worth your day
Calm shallow water and cheap food first, scenery second.
Gili Air East Beach
The best value family base in the islands. Gili Air faces Lombok across calm sheltered water, with shallow entry at several points, cheap warungs and homestays a few steps back, and a slow village pace with no traffic. You get the same white sand and clear water as Trawangan for noticeably less, which over a week long stay is the difference that counts. Swim near high tide and keep water shoes on for the coral patches.
Gili Meno East Beach
The quietest shallow shore of the three, on the sleepy middle island. The east of Gili Meno is calm, thinly visited and easy for small children to paddle, with barely any boat traffic and a real sense of space. The trade is fewer cheap food options than Gili Air, so it suits a calm day trip or a quieter stay rather than a budget base. Bring snacks and water to keep the cost down.
Gili Air South Beach
A calm corner on the same value island, sheltered and shallow at the right tide, with the cheap warungs of Gili Air within easy reach. It is less photogenic than the swing dotted west shore but easier and friendlier for a family settling in for the day. As everywhere here, the flat goes shallow and rubbly at low tide, so time the swim and keep shoes on small feet.
Gili Trawangan Sunset Beach
The most space and the famous swings, on the quiet northwest of the busy island. There is room for children to run on white sand well away from the harbour crowds, and the shallow water at the right tide is fine for paddling. The catch is cost, since the beach bars behind charge resort prices, so bring your own water and treat the free sunset as the main event.
Gili Meno Turtle Point
A cheap thrill children remember, where green turtles graze in shallow water you reach straight from the sand with a mask. The swimming is about the snorkelling rather than lounging and the entry can be rubbly, so it suits confident little swimmers in water shoes at higher tide. For the price of rented gear it is one of the great free family experiences in Indonesia.
The honest read for families
The first thing to be straight about is safety provision, because there is very little of it. The Gilis have no lifeguards on any beach, currents run in the channels between the islands, and the reefs are protected and sharp. None of that makes a family holiday a bad idea, but it does mean you are the lifeguard, so keep young children in shallow sheltered water at higher tide and never let them swim out toward the channels. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and change with the tide and season.
The overrated choice for families is the southeast of Gili Trawangan around the harbour, which is where the fast boats land and the bars cluster. It is loud, the water by the jetty is the murkiest on the island, and the prices are the highest. Families are far happier a short walk or cycle away on the northwest sand, or better still on Gili Air, which gives the same clear water and a gentler pace for less. Do not base a family stay on the Trawangan strip just because it is where the boat drops you.
On cost, the Gilis reward a little planning and almost nothing else. The beaches, the sunsets and the turtle snorkelling are all free, the public slow boat from Bangsal on Lombok is a fraction of the tourist fast boat fare, and the warungs on Gili Air and the Trawangan night market feed a family cheaply. The only real spend is daybeds and beach bar rounds, both optional. Bring or rent snorkel gear, pack water shoes, and a family beach week here costs far less than the southern Bali resorts most people compare it to.
A simple base for the family day
The Gilis are a coast of beach bars, swing photo spots and simple beachfront warungs rather than grand family clubs, and on a budget a rented daybed and a round of fresh juices will see a family through the day for very little. Where smarter beachfront lounges with daybeds do exist they cluster on the northwest of Gili Trawangan and along the east of Gili Air, a few with shallow water and shade that suit children. We never invent a venue, a price or a minimum spend, so anything we cannot confirm is marked to be confirmed. If a reserved daybed is part of your plan, browse the directory and send one enquiry so the venue can confirm space before you commit. For most family days, the free public sand and a cheap warung lunch are the better value.

Before you go
Which Gili island is best for families?
Gili Air is the best family base for most travellers. It has the calm sheltered water and slow car free pace of the islands, plus more cheap warungs, homestays and shops than quiet Gili Meno, all at a fraction of the prices on Gili Trawangan. Children can walk and cycle with no traffic, and the value over a week long stay is hard to beat.
Are the Gili Islands beaches safe for young children?
There are no lifeguards on any Gili beach, so supervision is entirely down to you. The sheltered east shores of Gili Air and Gili Meno are calm and shallow at higher tide, which suits paddling, but currents run in the channels between the islands and should be avoided. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so check the tide, keep children close and judge the water before they go in.
Do children need water shoes on the Gili Islands?
Yes, water shoes are worth packing for every child. Much of the Gili shoreline is dead coral rubble rather than soft sand, especially at the water edge and on the reef flats, and it can be sharp underfoot. Cheap rubber water shoes turn a wince into an easy paddle and cost very little to buy before you travel or on the islands.
Is Gili Trawangan suitable for a family?
Parts of it, yes. The northwest of Gili Trawangan is quiet white sand with the famous swings and plenty of space for children, a short walk from the loud southeast harbour strip where the bars and late music are. If you stay on the north or west you get a calm family base on the liveliest island. If you want the simplest, cheapest family choice, though, Gili Air is easier.
How much does a family beach day on the Gilis cost?
It can cost almost nothing. Every beach is free public sand, the sunsets are free and turtle snorkelling needs only a cheap rented mask. The optional spend is daybeds and beach bar food and drink, which carry resort prices on Gili Trawangan and are cheaper on Gili Air. Pack water shoes and snorkel gear, eat at the warungs and the night market, and a family day here stays very affordable.
