South Beach is the harbour side of Gili Air, the shore where the boats from Lombok and Bali tie up and where most of the island's accommodation, beach bars and dive shops are gathered. It is the busiest and most built up part of the island, and the honest read is that it is the practical side rather than the postcard one. For a value traveller, though, practical is exactly the point, because this is where the cheapest beds, the easiest arrivals and the most food choice all sit.
The smart money bases here and spends little. With most of the island's warungs and rooms on this side, competition keeps prices down, and you never pay for transport since the boats, the food and the bars are all within a short walk. There is a genuine free draw too, the soft coral snorkel off the southeast point, where pink and orange corals sit a short way off a small beach and cost nothing to swim out to with your own mask. Eat at the warungs back from the front, snorkel the southeast for free, and Gili Air becomes one of the cheapest island days in the region.
This shore suits budget travellers, divers and anyone who values ease and a lively but not raucous scene. It is honest to say the sand and water right by the harbour are busier and less clear than the island's east shore, with boat traffic to mind, so this is a base and a snorkel point more than a swimming beach. For the whitest sand and the best off the beach snorkelling, walk round to the east. Stay on the south side for value and convenience, and roam the island for its prettier shores.
Gili Air's south side is beach bars, warungs and dive shops rather than big clubs. Operators and their terms change through the year, so compare the current options in our Gili Islands beach clubs directory.
The south side is lined with beach bars, cafes and warungs serving food, drinks and the odd daybed near where the boats land, at the island's most competitive prices. Eating back from the front is cheaper than the beachfront tables. Names, opening status and prices change and are to be confirmed.
The dive shops clustered near the harbour rent gear and run trips, though the soft coral off the southeast point is good enough to snorkel free from the sand. Bringing your own mask beats daily hire on cost. Operators and rates vary and are to be confirmed.
Gili Air is the closest island to Lombok, and South Beach is where you land. The crossing from Bangsal harbour is the quickest and cheapest of the three islands, with tourist fast boats also running from Bali and Lombok. All tie up on the south side, so the cheapest rooms and the most warungs are steps from the jetty. There are no cars or motorbikes, so you move on foot, by bicycle or by cidomo pony cart.
The island is small and flat, easy to walk or cycle right around, so transport is rarely a cost. Bring cash for warungs, gear and the boat back since cards are patchy and ATMs are limited, pack reef safe sun cream and water shoes for the coral, and snorkel the soft coral off the southeast point with your own mask to keep the day free.
Tell us the date and party and we will match you to a beach bar or daybed on or near Gili Air and pass on your request. No charge to enquire.
On the south side, at South Beach. The crossing from Bangsal on Lombok is the quickest and cheapest, with fast boats also running from Bali and Lombok. Because the boats tie up here, most of the island's accommodation and warungs are within a short walk of the jetty.
Yes. Most of the island's cheap rooms, warungs and bars cluster on the south side, so competition keeps prices down, and you save on transport since the boats, food and beds are all close together. It is the most convenient and affordable part of the island.
Yes, off the southeast point. A patch of soft pink and orange coral sits a short way off a small beach there, and you can snorkel it free with your own mask. The water right by the harbour is busier and less clear, so snorkel along from the jetty rather than beside it.
It is not the best spot. The water near the harbour carries boat traffic and is less clear than the island's east shore, so it suits arrival and a soft coral snorkel off the southeast more than a clear swim. For the whitest sand and clearest water, walk round to the east beach.
Both are limited. The island has only a few ATMs and many small warungs do not take cards, so carry enough cash for food, gear and the boat back. Drawing cash on Lombok or before you cross is the safer move, especially if you are staying several days.
