Sunset Beach is the prettiest sand on Gili Trawangan and, for a value traveller, the best news on the island, because the thing everyone comes for is free. The northwest shore is a soft curve of white coral sand a fifteen minute walk or short cycle from the harbour, far enough from the bars and dive shops to feel calm, and in the evening the sun drops behind the silhouette of Bali's Mount Agung across the water. You pay nothing to lay a towel on the sand and watch it, which on an island where so much is marked up for tourists is worth saying plainly.
What you are really paying for here is the staging. The famous swings standing out in the shallows, the ones all over the photos, mostly belong to beach bars, and a turn on some of them means buying a drink or paying a small fee, which is to be confirmed at each spot. The daybeds and the sunset cocktails carry resort prices, and the bars know exactly what the view is worth. The clever move is simple. Walk past the busiest bar, find an open patch of public sand, bring your own water, and enjoy the same sunset for free.
It suits slow travellers, couples and anyone chasing the postcard without the harbour noise. The honest caveats are the tide and the coral. This is a shallow reef flat, so at high tide the water is calm and clear for a gentle swim, while at low tide it can be too shallow to swim and the coral is exposed, which also strands those photogenic swings on dry sand. The bottom is coral rubble in places, so water shoes help, and there are no lifeguards anywhere on the Gilis. Time your visit for an incoming tide near sunset and you get the best of the beach. For the snorkelling, head to Turtle Point on the other side of the island.
The northwest shore is lined with sunset beach bars rather than glossy clubs. Operators and their terms change through the year, so compare the current options in our Gili Islands beach clubs directory.
The northwest sand is fronted by a run of seasonal beach bars serving drinks, food and daybeds at sunset prices, several with the photo swings out in the shallows. Specific operators, opening status, fees and any drink minimum are to be confirmed before you visit.
A street or two inland the simple warungs and cafes serve the same island for a fraction of the beachfront price. For a value evening, eat back from the sand and walk down for the free sunset. Operators and prices vary and are to be confirmed.
Sunset Beach sits on the northwest of Gili Trawangan, away from the harbour where the boats land. There are no cars or motorbikes on the island, so you reach it on foot in around fifteen to twenty minutes, by hired bicycle in a few minutes, or by cidomo pony cart. A bicycle for the day is the cheapest and most flexible option and lets you ride back along the quiet west track after dark.
Bring water, reef safe sun cream and water shoes for the coral, and carry small cash since not every bar takes cards. Check the tide so you arrive on an incoming sea for swimming and the swings, aim to be in place around thirty minutes before sundown, and decide whether you want a free patch of sand or a paid daybed before the bars fill.
Tell us the date and party and we will match you to a beach bar or daybed on or near Sunset Beach and pass on your request. No charge to enquire.
Yes. The northwest shore of Gili Trawangan is public sand and costs nothing to sit on, and the famous sunset is free to anyone on the beach. You pay only if you want a daybed, a drink at the beach bars behind, or a turn on one of the photo swings that some bars charge for. Bring your own water and a towel and the sunset costs you nothing.
Not always. Several of the iconic swings standing in the shallows belong to beach bars and may require a drink purchase or a small fee to use, which is to be confirmed at each spot. There are usually a few you can reach freely, but the simplest value move is to enjoy the view and the sand for nothing rather than paying for a staged photo.
Usually, but the tide rules it. The northwest shore is a shallow reef flat, so at high tide the calm clear water is good for a gentle swim, while at low tide it can be too shallow and the coral is exposed. There are no lifeguards on the Gilis, the bottom is coral rubble in places, so water shoes help and you should check the tide and conditions, which are typical rather than guaranteed.
It is on the northwest side of the island, away from the harbour. There are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Trawangan, so you walk, cycle or take a cidomo pony cart from the main strip, around fifteen to twenty minutes on foot or a short cheap bike ride. Hiring a bicycle for the day is the cheapest and easiest way to reach the quieter west and north beaches.
Any clear evening in the dry season from May to September gives the most reliable sunsets, with the silhouette of Bali's Mount Agung often visible across the water. Arrive thirty minutes before sundown to find a free patch of sand before the bars fill. The shoulder months are quieter and cheaper than the July and August peak for the same view.
