Praia do Leao is the beach people picture when they dream of Fernando de Noronha, and then find, to their surprise, that it costs nothing extra to enjoy. Named for the lion shaped rock that sits just offshore, it is a wide crescent of golden sand on the wild outer coast, backed by cliffs, fronted by the open Atlantic and left almost entirely to nature. For a value minded traveller the maths is simple. Noronha is an expensive island to reach and stay on, with an environmental tax and a marine park ticket to pay, but once you have those the most beautiful beach on the island asks nothing more of you. No club, no sunbed rental, no minimum spend, just the sea and the sand.
The honest read is that Leao rewards preparation and punishes the casual. There is no kiosk, no bar, no shade and no lifeguard, so you carry in your water, your sun cover and your lunch, and you carry your litter back out. The sea faces the open ocean and can run with real waves and currents, especially when the wind is up, which makes it a place to respect rather than a place to let small children splash freely. Come at low tide and the reward is calmer natural pools among the rocks at the eastern end, a sheltered dip with the cliffs above and the Leao rock in front of you.

What little club style comfort exists on Noronha belongs to the island pousadas and a few spots near the busier inner coast beaches, and it is limited and pricey. Leao is where you spend nothing and simply face the sea.

On the wild outer coast
Praia do Leao sits on the southern, outer coast of Fernando de Noronha, reached by the island road and a short walk down to the sand, well inside the national marine park. There is a viewpoint and parking area above, and the beach opens out below the cliffs. As with all of Noronha you will have paid the island environmental tax and the marine park ticket, and opening hours and any nesting closures are set by the park, so check them locally and plan around the tide.
Bring everything you need for the day, because there is nothing to buy at the beach. Water, reef safe sun cover, a hat, food and a bag for your litter are the essentials, and sturdy footwear helps on the rocks at low tide. Time your visit for the morning and the lower tide for the calmest water and the natural pools, keep well clear of any turtles, and treat the currents with care as this is an unpatrolled open ocean beach.
