Sakarun is the beach people mean when they say there is somewhere in Croatia that looks like the Caribbean. On the island of Dugi Otok, off the coast near Zadar, it is a long, gently curving bay where fine white pebble and sand make the shallow water glow a bright turquoise, so the colour you see in the photographs is real rather than a filter. The water stays shallow and warm a long way out, the pines reach down behind the shore for shade, and a couple of beach bars keep you fed and watered, which together make it one of the gentlest and most family friendly beaches in the whole region.
What sets Sakarun apart is that softness. Most beautiful beaches on this coast drop quickly into deep, clear water; Sakarun instead gives you a broad, shallow, warm shelf that children can wade across and nervous swimmers can enjoy, all under that lagoon colour. The bed is pale pebble and sand rather than the sharp shingle common elsewhere, so it is kinder underfoot, and the bay is broad enough to absorb a fair crowd without feeling packed.
The honest note is the journey and the simplicity. Dugi Otok is reached by ferry from Zadar and then a drive across the island, so Sakarun is a commitment rather than a quick hop, and parking near the beach is limited and a short walk from the sand. Facilities are deliberately low key, so bring water, shade and supplies for a full day. Make the effort, ideally outside the peak of August when the day boats arrive, and you will find one of the most beautiful and easygoing bays in Dalmatia.
Sakarun is anchored by a couple of low key beach bars behind the shore rather than a single club. We describe them factually and route enquiries through our directory; we never invent details.
A couple of beach bars operate behind the shore with drinks, food and possibly loungers, keeping the long bay supplied without turning it into a resort beach. Their names, hours, menus and any charges are set by the operators and are to be confirmed.
The long turquoise bay is free to use, with shallow, warm water and pebble and sand open to all and pines behind for shade. Loungers from the bars carry a charge, but the bay itself costs nothing and there is room to spread out.
Sakarun is on the island of Dugi Otok, reached by ferry or catamaran from Zadar to the island and then a drive of around half an hour to the bay on the northern side. Most visitors come by car using the ferry, and the beach is also a popular stop for boat trips.
Parking near the beach is limited and a short walk from the sand, so arriving early helps in summer. The shallow bay is gentle, but it can pick up movement on breezy days and there is no guaranteed lifeguard, so supervise children and bring water and shade; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Sakarun is famous for its shallow turquoise water and pale white pebble and sand, which give it a lagoon look often compared to the Caribbean. The gentle, warm, shallow bay also makes it one of the best beaches in the region for families.
Very. The water stays shallow and warm a long way out over a soft pale bed, so children can wade and paddle safely, and the bay is gentle. Supervise children and watch for movement on breezy days; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

It is a mix of fine white pebble and sand, pale enough to turn the shallow water turquoise. The bed is softer underfoot than most pebble beaches on this coast, though water shoes still make it more comfortable.
