The verdict

  • Best for: Families with young children who want shallow, warm, gentle water, travellers chasing a turquoise lagoon look without leaving the Adriatic, and anyone happy to make the island trip for it.
  • Best spot: The shallow middle of the bay for the warmest, calmest water and the Caribbean colour, with the pines behind for shade and a couple of beach bars for the day.
  • Know this: Sakarun is on Dugi Otok, reached by ferry and a drive, so it takes effort to get to and has limited parking, but the long shallow turquoise bay is among the best for families in the region.

Sand
White pebble and sand
A long bay of fine white pebble mixed with sand, pale enough to turn the shallow water a bright turquoise. The soft, light bed is gentler underfoot than most pebble beaches, though water shoes still help.
Water
Shallow turquoise
The water stays shallow and warm a long way out over the pale bed, glowing turquoise in the sun, which is why Sakarun is often likened to a lagoon. The gentle shelf makes it unusually safe feeling for children.
Entry
Free public beach
The beach is free to walk onto and swim from. A couple of beach bars operate behind the shore with drinks, food and possibly loungers, with any charges set by the operators and to be confirmed, while the bay itself costs nothing.
Facilities
Beach bars, pine shade
A couple of beach bars sit behind the shore for food and drink, and the pines give natural shade, so it is better equipped than many island beaches while staying low key. Parking is limited and a short walk from the sand.
Lifeguard
Seasonal, not guaranteed
Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed. The shallow, gentle bay is among the safer feeling beaches in the region, but supervise children and follow local advice, especially on breezy days when the open bay picks up movement. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Best months
June to September
The shallow water warms early and stays warm through summer, with the turquoise colour at its best in bright midday sun. July and August are busiest with day trippers, so June and September are calmer for the same conditions.
The honest read

Sakarun is the beach people mean when they say there is somewhere in Croatia that looks like the Caribbean. On the island of Dugi Otok, off the coast near Zadar, it is a long, gently curving bay where fine white pebble and sand make the shallow water glow a bright turquoise, so the colour you see in the photographs is real rather than a filter. The water stays shallow and warm a long way out, the pines reach down behind the shore for shade, and a couple of beach bars keep you fed and watered, which together make it one of the gentlest and most family friendly beaches in the whole region.

What sets Sakarun apart is that softness. Most beautiful beaches on this coast drop quickly into deep, clear water; Sakarun instead gives you a broad, shallow, warm shelf that children can wade across and nervous swimmers can enjoy, all under that lagoon colour. The bed is pale pebble and sand rather than the sharp shingle common elsewhere, so it is kinder underfoot, and the bay is broad enough to absorb a fair crowd without feeling packed.

The honest note is the journey and the simplicity. Dugi Otok is reached by ferry from Zadar and then a drive across the island, so Sakarun is a commitment rather than a quick hop, and parking near the beach is limited and a short walk from the sand. Facilities are deliberately low key, so bring water, shade and supplies for a full day. Make the effort, ideally outside the peak of August when the day boats arrive, and you will find one of the most beautiful and easygoing bays in Dalmatia.

Getting there and essentials

Sakarun is on the island of Dugi Otok, reached by ferry or catamaran from Zadar to the island and then a drive of around half an hour to the bay on the northern side. Most visitors come by car using the ferry, and the beach is also a popular stop for boat trips.

Parking near the beach is limited and a short walk from the sand, so arriving early helps in summer. The shallow bay is gentle, but it can pick up movement on breezy days and there is no guaranteed lifeguard, so supervise children and bring water and shade; conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
