Punta Rata is the beach that lands on lists of the most beautiful in the world, and standing on it you understand why. Set on a cape at Brela on the Makarska Riviera, it is a stretch of smooth white pebble backed by Aleppo pines that lean right down to the water, giving natural shade and that warm pine scent over clear turquoise sea. At its western end rises the Brela Stone, a small pine topped rock standing just offshore that has become one of the most photographed images of the whole Croatian coast.
The swimming and the setting carry it. The water is clear, clean and Blue Flag awarded, shelving gently into swimmable depth, and the rocks around the Brela Stone make for genuinely good snorkeling with a lively underwater world. Behind the pebble, a pine shaded promenade runs along the Brela seafront with bars, cafes and sunbed hire, so you get refreshment and shade without the beach losing its green, natural character. It is the rare famous beach that is as lovely up close as it is in the photographs.
The honest note is the same as for any beauty that has been found: it gets busy. In July and August the pebble fills and the promenade hums, and Punta Rata is pebble rather than sand that shelves into depth, so water shoes help and it suits swimmers more than small children paddling. None of that takes away the setting. Come in the shoulder months or early in the day, settle under the pines, snorkel around the Brela Stone, and Punta Rata earns every word of its reputation.

Summer from June to September brings the warmest, clearest sea and the liveliest promenade, but also the biggest crowds in July and August. Late spring and early autumn are quieter and still pleasant, and the pines keep the beach shaded even in high summer.
