Pokonji Dol is the answer to a common Hvar question: where is the nearest proper beach to town that is actually worth the walk. A short way east of Hvar town along the shore path, it is a sheltered pebble bay that looks out to a tiny islet capped by a small lighthouse, a view that gives the beach its postcard and its name. The water is clear and usually calm, the pines behind throw real shade, and a beach restaurant on the shore means you can make a full, easy day of it without trekking across the island.
It works because it is close and complete. You can walk in from town in around half an hour, hop over by water taxi in minutes, or arrive by boat, and once there you have clear swimming towards the islet, good snorkelling over the rocks, shade under the pines and a kitchen on hand. That combination of easy access and a real beach with facilities is rarer than it sounds on Hvar, where the best coves often demand a boat or a long, hot path.
The honest note is that the same convenience makes it popular. Because it is the closest good beach to a busy town, Pokonji Dol fills through the middle of the day in high summer, and the pebble near the restaurant is the first to go. It is still calmer than the town beaches and the bay holds its clear water well, but if you want it at its quietest, come earlier in the day or later in the afternoon, or carry on to one of the further coves for more solitude.
Pokonji Dol is anchored by a beach restaurant on the shore rather than a club. We describe it factually and route enquiries through our directory; we never invent details.
A beach restaurant on the shore serves food and drink through the day and may offer a few loungers, set against the pines with the lighthouse islet in view. Its name, hours, menu and any charges are set by the operator and are to be confirmed.
The bay's pebble is free to use, with clear, sheltered water open to all and pines for natural shade. Loungers from the restaurant carry a charge, but the public pebble costs nothing and is the simplest way to enjoy the bay.
Pokonji Dol lies a short way east of Hvar town and can be reached on foot along the shore path in around half an hour, by a quick water taxi from the town harbour, or by private boat. The easy access from town is a big part of its appeal.
The bay is sheltered and usually calm, but the pebble entry is slippery and the water deepens towards the islet, so wear water shoes and mind your depth. Bring water for the day, and remember conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so follow any local advice.

The small islet just offshore is topped by a lighthouse and gives the beach its name and its postcard view. It shelters the bay, which helps keep the water calm, and makes a clear target for a swim or snorkel.
No. Pokonji Dol is a pebble and shingle beach, like most around Hvar. Water shoes make the entry far more comfortable and protect against the slippery stones.
