Cyprus is one of the most family friendly beach islands in the Mediterranean, and the reason is the southeast. The corner around Ayia Napa and Protaras is lined with soft pale sand and warm, gently shelving water that stays shallow a long way out, which is exactly what you want with young children. Add reliable sunshine, Blue Flag cleanliness on many beaches and full services close to the sand, and you have a coast built for an easy family day.

We have ranked these for the realities of a beach day with kids, the softness of the sand, how gently the water shelves, and how close the shade, food and toilets are. The sandy bays of Ayia Napa and Protaras come out on top, with Coral Bay near Paphos the best of the west and Finikoudes the easiest town beach in Larnaca. We also flag where the water deepens quickly or the sand turns to coarser grit, so you can match the beach to the age of your children rather than discover the mismatch at the water's edge.

The best family beach on the west coast, a sheltered sandy bay between two headlands with calmer water than the open Paphos coast and full services behind. A reliable choice if you are based around Paphos rather than the southeast.

Makronissos

Three linked sandy coves just west of Ayia Napa, calmer and a touch quieter than Nissi, with soft sand, shallow water and sunbed hire. A good pick if you want the southeast sand without the busiest crowds.

5
Larnaca

Finikoudes

Larnaca's central town beach, a stretch of darker sand backed by a palm lined promenade of cafes, easy to reach and handy for a half day. The sand is coarser and greyer than the southeast, but the services and access are excellent.

Who it suits, who should skip

If you have toddlers and want the gentlest possible day, point yourself at the southeast. Nissi, Fig Tree Bay and Makronissos give you soft sand, warm water that stays shallow a long way out and full services on the beach, so the kit, the snacks and the shade are never far. Coral Bay is the equivalent for families based around Paphos, sheltered and sandy where the open west coast is rougher. These are the beaches where a small child can paddle safely in ankle deep water while you stay close.

Who should skip what? If you are after peace and quiet, avoid Nissi in peak summer, when it runs loud and packed with a young party crowd into the afternoon, and choose Makronissos or Kapparis instead. If you are based in Limassol, know that many of its beaches are coarser grit and darker sand rather than the soft southeast white, so manage expectations or make the drive east for a special day. And as ever, watch the water on windy afternoons, when even a gentle bay can pick up a chop. Lifeguard cover varies by beach and season, so keep young children close and never assume supervision.

Where to book a base

All Cyprus beach clubs

A family day is easier with a booked base on the sand, a front row of beds in the shade, somewhere to leave your bags and lunch a few steps away. The serviced beaches at Nissi, Fig Tree Bay and Coral Bay are the simplest places to reserve sunbeds and an umbrella ahead of a busy summer day, and some have family friendly loungers and food on the beach. Tell us the beach and your dates and we will pass the enquiry to the club so they can confirm space and any minimum spend.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Cyprus beach is best for young children?

Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay in the southeast are the easiest, with soft sand and warm water that stays shallow a long way out. Makronissos near Ayia Napa is a calmer, slightly quieter alternative. All three pair gentle shallows with full services, so shade, snacks and sunbeds are close to the towel.

Are Cyprus beaches sandy or pebbly?

It depends on the coast. The southeast around Ayia Napa and Protaras has soft pale sand, Coral Bay near Paphos is sandy and sheltered, while many Limassol beaches are coarser grit and darker sand. For the softest sand with young children, head for the southeast and choose Nissi, Fig Tree Bay or Makronissos.

Do the family beaches have facilities and sunbeds?

Yes. Nissi, Fig Tree Bay, Coral Bay and Finikoudes all have sunbed and umbrella hire, snack bars or cafes and toilets, with watersports on several. Quieter coves like Kapparis have lighter facilities, so bring more of your own kit there. Booking sunbeds ahead helps on busy summer days.

Is Nissi Beach suitable for families?

By day Nissi is excellent for families, with soft sand, warm shallow water and full services. The catch is the atmosphere in peak summer, when it draws a loud young party crowd, especially in the afternoon. Come early, or choose calmer Makronissos nearby if you want the same sand with a quieter feel.

Which side of Cyprus is best for a family beach holiday?

The southeast around Ayia Napa and Protaras is the strongest base for families, with the softest sand, the gentlest water and the most family beaches close together. Paphos works well too thanks to Coral Bay, while Larnaca offers easy town beaches. Limassol is the least sandy of the main resort areas.
