Finikoudes Beach

Finikoudes is the beating heart of Larnaca's seafront, the city beach that runs right along the famous palm lined promenade from which it takes its name. This is a town beach in the truest sense. You step from the cafes, tavernas and shops straight onto groomed grey gold sand, the water is calm and shallow in the sheltered bay, and everything you might want is within a few steps. For a city break by the sea, or a easy family day without a drive, it is hard to beat for sheer convenience.

The promenade is what gives it character. Lined with palms and backed by a continuous run of places to eat and drink, it turns a beach day into a stroll, a coffee, a long lunch and a swim all in one. The sand is comfortable, sunbeds and umbrellas are easy to hire, and the gentle shallow water makes for relaxed swimming close to the action. Families like the safety conscious shallows and the fact that food, shade and a toilet are always close at hand.

The honest read is that this is urban rather than idyllic. Finikoudes is convenient and sociable but it is a city beach, busy in summer, framed by the town rather than nature, and the sand is groomed and managed rather than wild. The water is calm and clean for a town setting but it does not have the clarity of the open coves further out. You come here for ease and atmosphere, not for scenery or solitude, and on that score it delivers exactly what it promises.

Who should skip it. If you want clear water, dramatic scenery or a quiet stretch of sand, the bays of the east coast or the coves near Limassol suit better. But for a walkable, lively, genuinely useful city beach with a palm promenade of cafes and tavernas behind it, Finikoudes is the easiest and most enjoyable beach day in the centre of Larnaca.
