Nissi Beach
Best for. Groups and younger couples who want famous white sand, warm shallow water and a beach that turns into a party with bars, music and foam by afternoon.
Best spot. The sandbar out to the little islet at the western end, where the water is shin deep and clear and the crowds thin a little away from the bars.
Know this. Nissi is genuinely beautiful and genuinely loud. In July and August it is packed and the music starts early. Come before mid morning for the calm version, or pick Makronissos next door for peace.
Nissi is the beach that put Ayia Napa on postcards, and the first sight of it explains why. A broad curve of soft white sand wraps around water so shallow and clear it glows turquoise, with a tiny islet just offshore that you can reach across a sandbar with the sea barely above your knees. On a still morning it looks every bit the tropical bay the brochures promise, and the swimming for children and waders is as easy and warm as it appears.
Then the day turns. Nissi is also the social heart of Ayia Napa, and from late morning the beach bar cranks up the music, the loungers fill shoulder to shoulder, and on event days there is foam, dancing and a crowd that came as much for the party as the sea. If that is the holiday you want, Nissi delivers it better than anywhere on the island. If it is not, the same beach can feel overwhelming by early afternoon.
The trick is timing, and it genuinely works. Arrive before the bars warm up and you get the gorgeous version, soft light on white sand, room to spread out and the sandbar nearly to yourself. Stay into the afternoon in peak season and you are committing to noise, density and queues for everything. Knowing which Nissi you are signing up for is the difference between a perfect morning and a frazzled afternoon.
Who should skip it. Families wanting a quiet day and anyone allergic to a club soundtrack should walk the short distance to Makronissos, which has the same kind of sand and water with a fraction of the volume. But for the famous view, the warm shallows and a beach that becomes a party without you having to leave your lounger, Nissi is the original and still the loudest.
Beach bars and a party, more than a club
Nissi is a public beach defined by its beach bar, watersports and daytime events rather than a private members club. For a calmer daybed setting, the quieter bays nearby suit better. Use the Cyprus beach clubs guide to compare options, and treat Nissi as the famous swim and the party in one.
Beach bars on the bay
Sunbed hire, watersports and a well known beach bar that runs daytime music and events in season. Specific operators, event dates and any minimum spend are to be confirmed locally.
Ayia Napa, southeast coast
Nissi sits on the southeast coast of Cyprus at the western edge of Ayia Napa, around forty five minutes by car from Larnaca airport. It is a short drive or a long walk from the centre of Ayia Napa.
There are several car parks behind the bay that fill early in high summer, and local buses connect Nissi with the Ayia Napa centre and the harbour. A car or taxi is easiest if you want to arrive early.
Sunbeds, bars and food are abundant, so you can travel light, but bring sun cover for the children since natural shade on the open sand is limited. Arrive early to claim a spot in peak season.

Common questions about Nissi
Is Nissi beach good for families?
The sand is soft and the water is shallow and warm, which suits children, but Nissi is also the busiest party beach in Ayia Napa. Families tend to be happiest in the morning before the music starts, or at quieter Makronissos next door.
Can you walk to the island at Nissi beach?
Yes. A shallow sandbar links the beach to the small islet that gives Nissi its name, and the water is usually only shin deep across it, which makes it the most popular spot in the bay.
Is Nissi beach a party beach?
It is the social centre of Ayia Napa. From late morning in summer the beach bar plays music and on event days there are foam parties and dancing, so it is lively rather than peaceful in peak season.
When is the best time to visit Nissi beach?
Early morning gives the calm, photogenic version before the crowds and music arrive, and June or September are warm with slightly thinner crowds than the July and August peak.
Is there parking at Nissi beach?
There are several car parks behind the bay, but they fill early in high summer. Arrive in the morning, use a taxi, or take a local bus from the Ayia Napa centre.
