The verdict

Best for. Families and couples who want Nissi quality sand and water with a calmer mood, organised sunbeds, watersports and a Blue Flag standard of facilities.

Best spot. The main central cove, where the sand is widest and the water shelves gently, ideal for children and an easy float close to the sunbed rows.

Know this. Makronissos is the sensible alternative to Nissi, with the same kind of beauty and far less noise. It still fills in peak season, so an early start keeps it relaxed.

The honest read

Makronissos is what a lot of people actually want when they picture Ayia Napa, the bright sand and clear shallow water of Nissi without the wall of sound. It sits a short way west along the same coast, a string of linked sandy coves backed by low ground and a car park rather than a strip of bars, and it carries a Blue Flag for its water and facilities. The result is a beach that looks the part and behaves itself.

The swimming is its strong suit. The main cove shelves slowly into warm, clear, calm water, so toddlers can paddle safely in typical conditions and adults can wade out for a lazy float. Organised sunbed rows, umbrellas and a watersports operator cover the practical side, and because the beach is broken into coves you can usually find a patch that feels a little tucked away even on a busy day.

The honest read is simply that calmer does not mean empty. Makronissos is no secret, and in July and August the sunbeds fill and the car park gets tight by late morning. The difference is the atmosphere, families and couples rather than a daytime club, conversation rather than a sound system. For most visitors that trade is exactly the right one, and a morning arrival keeps the whole day unhurried.

Who should skip it. If you came to Ayia Napa for the party, Makronissos will feel too quiet and Nissi is a two minute hop away. And if you want a dramatic cove with deep water and cliffs, this gentle sandy stretch is not that. But for a calm, good looking family beach with proper facilities and warm shallow water, Makronissos is the smartest beach in the area.

The club layer

Organised sunbeds, not a party club

Makronissos is a Blue Flag public beach with organised sunbed hire and watersports rather than a private club or a party bar. For a full daybed and cabana scene, compare the options in the Cyprus beach clubs guide. Keep Makronissos as the calm, well run family swim beside the noise of Nissi.

Ayia Napa, southeast coast

Makronissos lies on the southeast coast just west of Ayia Napa and next to Nissi, around forty five minutes by car from Larnaca airport and a short drive from the Ayia Napa centre.

There is a car park behind the main cove that fills by late morning in high season, and local buses serve the Nissi and Makronissos area from the town. A car or taxi makes an early arrival easiest.

Sunbed hire, watersports and a snack point cover the basics, but bring sun cover for the children since shade on the open sand is limited. Larger meals are a short drive away in Ayia Napa.

Common questions about Makronissos

Is Makronissos beach better than Nissi for families?
