Llafranc Beach
Best for. Travellers who want an elegant, easy going sandy bay with a proper promenade of restaurants behind it, and a refined evening rather than a party.
Best spot. Take a table on the seafront for a long lunch, then climb to the Sant Sebastia lighthouse above the bay for the view and a drink as the light softens.
Know this. Llafranc is small and popular, so summer parking is hard and the front fills by midday. Come early, or arrive on foot from Calella de Palafrugell along the Cami de Ronda.
Llafranc is the most polished of the three coves below Palafrugell, and it knows it. A neat crescent of golden sand curves under white buildings that climb the hillside, with a seafront promenade of restaurants and bars running the length of the bay and a marina of small boats at one end. Where its neighbour Calella keeps the rough charm of a fishing village, Llafranc has quietly become the elegant one, the place for a long lunch with your feet almost in the sand and a glass that lasts all afternoon.
For a food and culture day this bay is hard to beat. The promenade is made for grazing, with seafood, rice dishes and the local Emporda wines served looking straight out to sea, and the pace is unhurried by design. The real move at the end of the day is the short climb to the Sant Sebastia lighthouse and viewpoint on the headland above, where there is a terrace and a panorama over the whole coast as the sun drops. Pair a morning swim, a slow seafront lunch and a sunset drink up at the lighthouse and you have one of the most satisfying days on the Costa Brava.
The honest read is that Llafranc is small and much loved, so it pays for its charm in crowds and parking. The bay fills by late morning in July and August, the streets behind are tight, and prices on the front match the setting. If you want a bigger, livelier and cheaper beach, Llafranc is not it. The smart approach is to come early or out of peak, or to walk in along the Cami de Ronda from Calella de Palafrugell, which is one of the prettiest coastal strolls anywhere near here.
Clubs on this beach
Llafranc is a promenade beach rather than a club beach, lined with seafront restaurants and bars rather than daybed clubs. Seasonal sunbeds and parasols are hired on the sand, operators to be confirmed. For organised beach clubs along the wider coast, use the Costa Brava beach clubs guide.
Seafront promenade restaurants and bars
A line of seafront restaurants and bars runs behind the sand, with seasonal sunbed hire on the beach. Specific operators and prices to be confirmed.
Palafrugell, Costa Brava
Llafranc sits just below Palafrugell in the Baix Emporda, around forty five minutes by car from Girona and a short hop from its sister coves Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu. A road drops down to the bay, but parking near the front is very limited in summer and fills early.
In high season the easiest approach is often to park higher up or in Palafrugell and walk down, or to leave the car at a neighbouring cove and follow the Cami de Ronda along the shore. Once you are on the promenade the beach, the restaurants and the path up to the lighthouse are all within an easy walk.

Common questions about Llafranc
Is Llafranc a sandy beach?
Yes, Llafranc is a neat crescent of soft golden sand in a sheltered bay, which usually stays calm in settled summer weather. That, plus the promenade of restaurants right behind it, makes it one of the easier and more comfortable beaches near Palafrugell.
Where should you eat at Llafranc?
On the seafront promenade, which runs the length of the bay and leans towards seafood, rice dishes and local Emporda wines with a view straight out to sea. Book ahead in summer, and consider a sunset drink afterwards up at the Sant Sebastia lighthouse terrace.
How do you get from Llafranc to Calella de Palafrugell?
On foot in a few minutes along the Cami de Ronda, the coastal path that links the two coves. It is one of the prettiest short walks on this coast and a far better idea than driving between them and fighting for parking at each end.
Is parking difficult at Llafranc?
Yes, in summer it is. The bay is small and much loved, so the few spaces near the front fill by late morning. Arrive early, park higher up or in Palafrugell, or walk in from a neighbouring cove along the Cami de Ronda.
Is Llafranc better than Calella de Palafrugell?
They suit different moods. Llafranc is the smarter, calmer bay with a polished promenade, while Calella keeps the whitewashed fishing village character and its famous arches. The pleasure is doing both, linked by the short coastal walk between them.
