The romantic Costa Blanca is not the one on the postcards of high rise Benidorm. It is the string of small coves under pine covered cliffs on the northern coast, where the water is clear, the scale is intimate and the crowds thin out the moment you time your visit well. The good news for couples on a budget is that the most beautiful of these beaches are free, so a memorable day costs little more than getting there early and a long lunch you choose to treat yourselves to.

We have ranked the beaches below for what makes a beach romantic rather than just busy. Clear, calm water, an intimate setting, a quiet hour you can actually find, and somewhere nearby for a relaxed meal. The northern coves at Javea, Benitatxell and Moraira do this best, the genteel pebble beach at Albir offers calm with a scenic walk, and even the quieter Benidorm beach has its moment in the evening once the day crowds leave.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. For the most romantic day, go to Cala Granadella or Cala del Moraig early or out of season when the coves are near empty and the water is at its clearest, keep Cala del Portet for a gentle swim and a long lunch by the sea, and treat the evening as the moment, because that is when the coast is calm, golden and quiet.

Ranked for couples

The most romantic beaches for two

Quiet, clear and calm first, scene second.

01
Javea

Cala Granadella

The most romantic cove on the coast and regularly voted one of the best beaches in Spain, a small pebble bay of astonishingly clear turquoise water framed by pine covered cliffs, with a simple restaurant for a long lunch. The catch is its fame, so go at dawn or in the shoulder months and you will have something close to a private cove for nothing.

02
Benitatxell

Cala del Moraig

A dramatic pebble cove below sheer cliffs with clear deep water and the Cova dels Arcs sea cave to explore at one end. Wilder and more cinematic than the resort beaches, it feels like a private discovery early in the day. Bring water and sturdy shoes, arrive before the small car park fills, and you have one of the coast great swims to yourselves.

03
Moraira

Cala del Portet

A small, sheltered, pretty cove with calm clear turquoise water and a handful of beachfront restaurants for a relaxed lunch with a sea view. It is gentle and intimate rather than dramatic, ideal for an easy swim and a long table for two, and it is free to enjoy. Walk in from Moraira to skip the tight parking and come early or out of season.

04
Alfaz del Pi

Playa del Albir

A long white pebble beach with clear water and a calm, genteel mood, far quieter than the sandy resorts. The flat seafront leads to a scenic lighthouse walk with viewpoints over the coast, a lovely slow afternoon for a couple. Easy parking and good facilities make it a relaxed, low fuss romantic choice between Benidorm and Altea.

05
Benidorm

Playa de Poniente

The quieter, more local Benidorm beach, with a long palm lined promenade and far more room than Levante. It is no secret cove, but in the calm of the evening, once the day crowds have gone, the promenade walk and a waterfront dinner make a relaxed couples night out at a sensible price. The better value and calmer of the two Benidorm beaches.

The honest read

The honest read for couples

Be honest about the sunset, because the coast is. The Costa Blanca mostly faces east and southeast, so the sun rises over the sea and sets behind the hills, which means an early swim and a sea sunrise are the romantic showstoppers here, not a sunset over the water. The evening is still the loveliest time, calm, golden and quiet, but plan it as a still dusk and a waterfront dinner rather than a sun dropping into the Mediterranean.

Skip the obvious and you skip the crowds. Benidorm Levante is brilliantly run and great fun, but it is loud, packed and the opposite of romantic, so do not waste a couples day there. The northern coves are where the romance lives, and the only price of admission is timing. Go early or out of season, because a famous cove shoulder to shoulder with day trippers in August is no one idea of a romantic beach, however beautiful the water.

The smart cheap move keeps the magic and loses the cost. The best coves are free to enter, so your only real spend is a lunch or a dinner you choose, and even that is better value in the quiet northern towns than in the resort centres. Come in May, June, September or early October for warm clear water, near empty coves and easy free parking, bring your own shade, and you will have the most romantic beaches on the coast almost to yourselves. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so always check the flags.

A quiet table by the water

Browse Costa Blanca beach clubs

A quiet table by the water turns a couples beach day into an evening to remember, and the northern coves and towns do this far better, and often cheaper, than the resort strips. Cala Granadella and Cala del Portet have simple beachfront restaurants with a sea view, while Moraira, Javea and Altea add smarter options a short walk back. We never invent a venue, a minimum spend or an opening status, so anything we cannot confirm is marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to check your date.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Costa Blanca beach is the most romantic?

Cala Granadella at Javea is the standout, a small turquoise cove framed by pine cliffs with a simple restaurant for a long lunch, breathtaking early in the day or out of season. Cala del Moraig is more dramatic and Cala del Portet more gentle. All are free to enjoy, and all are most romantic before the summer crowds arrive.

Can you watch the sunset over the sea on the Costa Blanca?

Mostly no. The coast faces east and southeast, so the sun rises over the sea and sets behind the hills. An early swim and a sea sunrise are the romantic highlights here. The evening is still beautiful and calm for a waterfront dinner, but plan it as a still golden dusk rather than a sunset dropping into the water.

Which beaches should couples avoid for romance?

Benidorm Levante is lively, crowded and superbly run, but it is loud and the opposite of intimate, so skip it for a romantic day and head north instead. The quieter Poniente beach is calmer in the evening, but the real romance is in the northern coves at Granadella, Moraig and Portet, especially early or out of season.

Are the romantic beaches expensive?

No. The most beautiful coves here are free to enter, so a romantic day costs little more than getting there and a meal you choose to treat yourselves to. Lunch and dinner are better value in the quiet northern towns than in the resort centres, and visiting in the shoulder months means cheaper, calmer and easier free parking too.

When is the best time for a couples beach trip to the Costa Blanca?

May, June, September and early October give warm clear water, near empty coves and easy parking, which is ideal for couples. Early mornings and calm evenings are the most romantic and quietest hours. The famous coves are peaceful out of season and crowded in peak August, so time your visit and the romance looks after itself.
