The Costa Blanca is famous for its three hundred days of sun, and that headline is largely true, but sun and swimming weather are not the same thing. The beach season for warm sea and easy sunbathing runs from about May to October, peaking in the hot, busy months of July and August, while the rest of the year is mild and bright rather than a beach climate. The sea lags the air, staying cool well into spring and holding its warmth into the autumn, which is the single most useful fact for timing a trip here.

The honest read is that the best value lies in the shoulder months. June and September give you hot sunny days and a warm sea without the peak crowds and prices, while the mild, sunny winter draws northern Europeans for the light and the long stays even though the water is too cold to swim. Match the month to what you want, whether that is the warmest sea, the quietest sand or simply reliable winter sunshine, and the coast rarely disappoints.

Month notes

The months that matter

May opens the beach season. The days turn reliably warm, the crowds are still light before the school holidays, and the sea, while still on the cool side at around 18C, is swimmable for many. It is an excellent value month for sunbathing, walking the promenades and visiting the famous coves before they fill, and prices sit well below the summer peak.

June is one of the two finest months on the coast. The heat arrives in full, the sea warms to a pleasant temperature, the rain all but disappears, and the crowds have not yet peaked. It is the sweet spot for travellers who want hot, dependable beach weather and room on the sand at the northern coves, all before the July and August rush pushes prices and numbers up.

July and August are the peak, and the trade is comfort for company. The weather is hot and dry and the sea is at its warmest, but the Spanish national holidays and the international crowds arrive together, the famous coves such as Cala Granadella overflow and parking becomes the day's main challenge. Book accommodation well ahead, arrive at the coves at dawn, and expect the busiest, priciest version of the coast.

September is arguably the best all round month of the year here. The summer crowds thin as the schools go back, yet the sea is at or near its warmest after a long hot summer and the days stay hot and sunny. It is the ideal window for warm swimming, easy snorkelling in the clear northern coves and quiet sand, and it offers far better value than the August peak.

October carries the warmth forward, with a sea still warm from summer and pleasant mild days, though the autumn brings a rising chance of rain and the occasional heavy downpour known locally as the gota fria. It is a lovely, quiet month for swimming and exploring before the season winds down, as long as you keep an eye on the forecast.

From November to April the Costa Blanca is mild and sunny rather than a beach destination. November is the wettest month, winter days are bright and gentle at around 17C, and the sea is too cold for most to swim. This is why so many northern Europeans winter here for the light and the long stays, enjoying the promenades, the walks and the cafes even when the water is left to the bravest.

Where to book a daybed

All Costa Blanca beach clubs

Timing a daybed day on the Costa Blanca is mostly about the season, since the beach bars and smarter terraces run their fullest service through the warm months from late spring to early autumn and wind down over winter. The liveliest clusters of beach clubs and chiringuitos are around Benidorm, Albir and the northern resort towns, busiest in July and August and more relaxed in the shoulder months.

We never invent a venue, a price or an opening status, so any rate, season or minimum spend is to be confirmed until the club confirms it. Tell us your dates and we will pass the enquiry on so they can confirm whether they are open and what a daybed costs before you travel.

Good questions

Before you go

When is the best time to visit the Costa Blanca for the beach?

June and September are the sweet spots, with hot sunny days, a warm sea and far lighter crowds than the July and August peak. The beach season runs from about May to October, and the sea is warmest from August into late September. Both shoulder months offer the best value.

When is the sea warmest on the Costa Blanca?

The sea is warmest from August into late September, typically around 26C, after a long hot summer has heated it through. It stays swimmable from roughly June to October, but is cold, near 14C, through the winter and only mild in spring, so May swimmers should expect a cool sea.

Is the Costa Blanca warm in winter?

It is mild and sunny rather than warm, with bright winter days around 17C and the famous reputation for sunshine, which is why many northern Europeans spend the winter here. But the sea is cold, near 14C, so winter is for walks, promenades and cafes rather than swimming.

Which months are busiest on the Costa Blanca?

July and August are by far the busiest, when the Spanish national holidays and the international crowds arrive together. The popular northern coves such as Cala Granadella overflow and parking is the main challenge. June, September and October are much quieter while still warm.

Does it rain much on the Costa Blanca?

Not much. Rain is low through the summer and the coast is famously dry and sunny, but autumn brings a rising chance of showers, with November the wettest month and the occasional heavy autumn downpour known as the gota fria. Most of the year stays reliably bright.

When is the best value time to visit the Costa Blanca?

The shoulder months of late May, June, September and October offer the best value, with warm weather, a warm or warming sea and lower prices and crowds than the July and August peak. The mild, sunny winter is also good value for long stays, though too cool for the sea.
