Corfu is a long green island in the Ionian, and for sunset the side you choose is everything. The west coast faces the open sea and the sun, a run of sandy bays and dramatic rock beneath green hills, while the popular east coast resorts look across a narrow channel to the mainland of Greece and Albania and never see the sun set into the water. If a true sunset is the goal, you head west, to Pelekas, Glyfada, Agios Gordios and the wilder coves beyond.
The west coast has a famous perch. Above Pelekas beach sits Kaiser's Throne, a hilltop viewpoint named for the German emperor who came for the sunsets, and from there the whole western horizon opens out as the sun goes down. Down at sea level the beaches each have their own mood, the wide easy sand of Glyfada, the dramatic rock stacks of Agios Gordios, the secluded strand of Myrtiotissa and the cliff backed bays of Paleokastritsa. It is one of the best sunset coasts in the Ionian.
We have ranked the beaches below by how well each delivers the sunset as a romantic experience, weighing the aspect, the setting and the ease of an evening against the looks alone. Each entry links to its full guide for access and the honest read on crowds and footing. Remember that some of the loveliest west coast coves take a steep walk or a winding road, and that conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so anything we cannot confirm we mark to be confirmed.
Six of the best beaches for sunset in Corfu
A clifftop throne, a wide sweep of sand, and the honest line on which coast faces the light.
Pelekas
The island's classic sunset, a sandy west facing beach below the village of Pelekas, with the famous Kaiser's Throne viewpoint on the hill above where emperors once came for the light. From the beach or the terrace the sun drops straight into the open Ionian and the sky and sea turn gold and pink. The beach is relaxed with tavernas, and you can swim then climb for the view. On the list as the definitive Corfu sunset, the one with both an easy beach and a legendary vantage point.
Agios Gordios
A dramatic west facing bay backed by green hills, with tall rock stacks rising from the sea at its southern end that catch fire in the late light. The long sandy beach has tavernas and a relaxed mood, and as the sun goes down the stacks and the cliffs glow while the open horizon colours. It is striking and a little wild without being hard to reach. On the list for the sea level drama, the rock pinnacles and the open western horizon making one of the coast's most photogenic dusks.
Glyfada
A wide, easy sweep of golden sand on the west coast below wooded cliffs, the most comfortable of the island's sunset beaches with sunbeds, tavernas and gentle space to settle. It faces the open sea, so the sun sets straight ahead and the broad beach glows in the warm light, an unfussy and lovely evening for couples and families alike. It is popular and developed, which is the trade for the comfort. On the list as the relaxed, accessible west coast sunset where you can simply lay back and watch.
Myrtiotissa
A secluded strip of pale sand below steep green cliffs on the west coast, long celebrated as one of the most beautiful and natural beaches on Corfu and reached by a steep track. Facing the open sea, it catches a magnificent unspoilt sunset with almost no development to break the spell, intimate and wild. The access is awkward and facilities are minimal, which keeps it quiet. On the list for the secluded, natural romance, a west facing cove that feels a world away for the evening light.
Paleokastritsa
A string of small coves set among headlands and clifftop greenery on the northwest coast, where the famous monastery sits above water that turns deep gold in the late light. The bays themselves are sheltered and the sun sets beyond the headlands rather than always straight ahead, so the magic here is the glowing cliffs, the monastery viewpoint and a boat out among the sea caves at dusk. On the list for the cinematic setting and the clifftop vantage, a more scenic than head on sunset.
Porto Timoni
A spectacular double bay reached by a walk down from the village of Afionas on the northwest, two crescents of pebble and sand meeting at a slender neck of land with open sea on both sides. The west facing aspect and the high approach make for a breathtaking late light scene over the water and the headland. The walk is steep and there are no facilities, so it is for the able and the prepared. On the list for the sheer drama of the twin bays and the open western horizon at golden hour.
Be honest, the resort coast never sees the sun set
The honest read on Corfu is that the busy east coast, for all its charm, is the wrong side for sunset. The resorts at Barbati, Kassiopi and the long strip facing the mainland look east across a narrow channel, so they get a soft morning light and a sideways evening glow but never the sun dropping into the sea. The popular north coast around Sidari and the Canal d'Amour faces broadly north and gets packed by day. For the real thing you cross to the west coast, where the island faces the open Ionian and the light.
On the west coast, Pelekas is the one to know, both for the easy sandy beach and for Kaiser's Throne on the hill above, the historic viewpoint that opens the whole horizon at dusk. If you want the drama at sea level, Agios Gordios has its glowing rock stacks and Glyfada has the comfort of a wide, well served beach. For seclusion the steep walk down to Myrtiotissa rewards you with a wild, almost private sunset, and the cliffs and monastery of Paleokastritsa make a more scenic, framed dusk. Each is a different shade of the same good aspect.
A few honest notes for couples. The most beautiful west coast coves, Myrtiotissa and Porto Timoni, take a steep walk and have no facilities, so wear proper shoes, bring water and time the return for the light rather than the dark. The loveliest evenings come in late spring and early autumn, when the beaches are calmer than the July and August peak and the light is just as warm. Treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed and come a little before the listed sunset time.
Beach bars and taverna terraces for the golden hour
Corfu runs a relaxed west coast scene of beach bars and taverna terraces rather than a glossy club circuit, and the sandy bays at Glyfada and Pelekas and the hilltop terraces near Kaiser's Throne are easy places to take in the sunset with a drink and a meal, while Paleokastritsa adds a clifftop viewpoint and a boat trip among the caves at dusk. Operators, opening status and any minimum spend shift through the season and we never invent them, so where a venue is unconfirmed we say to be confirmed. Tell us your dates and the kind of evening you want and we pass the enquiry on to confirm what is open.

Before you go
Which Corfu beach has the best sunset?
Pelekas on the west coast is the classic, a sandy beach that faces the open Ionian with the famous Kaiser's Throne viewpoint on the hill above, so you can swim then climb for a sweeping sunset over the sea. For sea level drama, Agios Gordios glows around its tall rock stacks, and Glyfada offers the same west facing light with the comfort of a wide, well served beach. All sit on the sunset side of the island.
Does the east coast of Corfu see the sunset?
No, not over the sea. The east coast resorts, including Barbati and Kassiopi, look east across a narrow channel toward the mainland, so they catch the morning light and only a sideways glow in the evening. The north coast around Sidari and the Canal d'Amour faces broadly north. For the sun actually setting into the water you need the west coast, from Pelekas and Glyfada down to the wilder coves. Aspect is the thing to check on Corfu.
What is Kaiser's Throne and is it good for sunset?
Kaiser's Throne is a hilltop viewpoint above Pelekas village on the west coast, named for the German emperor who came for the views, and it is one of the best sunset spots on Corfu. From the terrace the whole western horizon opens out and the sun drops into the open sea, with the island spread out below. It can get busy at peak times, so arrive early for a spot. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so check the day.
Where is the most romantic sunset in Corfu for couples?
For seclusion the steep walk down to Myrtiotissa rewards you with a wild, almost private west facing sunset, while the twin bays of Porto Timoni are breathtaking for the able walker. For an easier romantic evening, a taverna terrace near Kaiser's Throne above Pelekas or a clifftop spot at Paleokastritsa pairs the light with dinner. All face the western sea. Treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed and time the walk for the light.
When is the best time for sunsets in Corfu?
Late spring and early autumn give the warmest, most settled evenings, with May, June and September quieter than the busy July and August peak and the light just as good. The west coast can pick up an afternoon breeze and some surf, which makes for dramatic skies but a livelier sea. The steep walks to the wilder coves are easier in daylight, so time the return accordingly. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so check locally.
