The verdict

Best for. Couples who want comfort with their cove, a polished daybed, a long lunch by the water and a clean sunset over open sea.

Best spot. A front daybed at Sora as the afternoon eases, or a quieter patch at the ends of the bay away from the busy middle.

Know this. The romance here is the sunset and the table, not solitude, since the smart sand fills fast through a peak summer day.

The honest read

Glyfada is where Corfu puts on its smartest clothes. A broad blue flag bay of soft golden sand sits below green hills on the west coast, and along it run the island's most polished beach clubs, the kind with reserved daybeds, a proper kitchen and rose by the water. After a run of wild coves elsewhere on the island, Glyfada is the easy, comfortable day, and for a couple that comfort has its own romance, the sort that comes with a cold drink brought to your lounger and a clean horizon to watch.

The real gift here is the sunset. Glyfada faces due west into open water, with nothing between the sand and the horizon, so the end of the day turns the whole bay gold and then pink. The pattern that works for two is simple. Let the busy middle of the day pass in the shade of an umbrella with a swim and a long lunch, then settle in for the late afternoon as the crowd thins, the light softens and the kitchens turn to dinner. A front daybed and a table as the sun drops is one of the loveliest easy evenings on the island.

The honest catch is that this is a scene, not a secret. Glyfada is popular and well known, and in July and August the front beds fill, the car park backs up by midday and the bay carries a holiday hum rather than hushed calm. It is also west facing and open, so an afternoon breeze can lift the surf and there can be a pull on a rougher day. None of that spoils it, but if you came to Corfu for silence and a cove of your own, Glyfada is the comfortable counterpoint rather than the hideaway, and the quiet is a short drive north at Paleokastritsa or up the path to Myrtiotissa.

Getting there and essentials

West coast, Corfu

Glyfada sits on the west coast below the village of Pelekas, around a thirty minute drive from Corfu Town, with the last stretch winding steeply down to the bay. The descent is narrow in places, so take it gently and use the passing places.

A seasonal bus runs from Corfu Town in summer, and some hotels above the bay run a shuttle down to the sand. With a car you can come for the sunset and leave when you please, which is the smarter play for a couple chasing the golden hour here.

Common questions about Glyfada

Is Glyfada the best beach club beach in Corfu?

For a polished daybed day it is the island's smartest choice. The blue flag sand holds Corfu's most stylish venues, with Sora Beach Club leading for a put together lunch by the water and Pazuzu running from sunbeds into a livelier evening. It suits a couple who want comfort and a clean sunset over open sea.

Is Glyfada good for couples?

Yes, especially at the edges of the day. The wide west facing bay glows at sunset and the kitchens are made for a long lunch, so a late afternoon arrival, a daybed and a table as the light turns is the romantic play. The middle of a peak day is busier and better for shade and a swim.

How crowded does Glyfada get?

Busy in July and August, when the front beds at the smart venues fill and the car park backs up by midday. The bay is broad enough to find space at the quieter ends, and a reservation a few days ahead secures the good daybeds. June and September are far calmer.

Is there a strong current or wind at Glyfada?

Being west facing and open, Glyfada can pick up an afternoon breeze and surf that lifts the waves, and there can be a pull on rougher days. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and lifeguard cover is not promised, so read the flags, swim in calm spells and treat the sea as unsupervised.

Do you need to book a daybed at Glyfada?

For the front beds at the stylish venues in July and August a reservation a few days ahead is wise, and a weekday is always easier than a weekend. In June and September you can often arrive, take a bed with lunch and let the afternoon drift. Minimum spends move with the season, so ask when you enquire.
