The verdict

Best for. Couples who will trade a steep walk for a wild double bay with no crowds and no clutter, just clear water both ways.

Best spot. Swim on whichever side the wind leaves calm, then cross the narrow neck of sand to the other bay. In summer the water taxi from Agios Georgios Pagon saves the climb.

Know this. There is no shade, no bar and no lifeguard below, so carry water and sun cover and treat the place as the wild cove it is.

The honest read

Porto Timoni is the bay you earn, and that is the whole point of it. From the pretty village of Afionas a rocky path drops to a narrow neck of land where a beach faces each way, two small bays sharing a single spine of pebble and sand. There is nothing built down here, no bar, no sunbeds, no row of umbrellas, only clear water on both sides and the headland rising green behind you. For a couple who want a wild cove rather than a serviced beach, it is one of the most romantic places on Corfu, precisely because so little has been done to it.

The honesty is in the getting there. The walk down from Afionas takes most people somewhere between fifteen and twenty five minutes, but it is steep and the ground is loose limestone and red earth that wants good shoes and a careful step, and the climb back up in the afternoon heat is the part nobody photographs. Below there is no shade and nowhere to buy a drink, so everything you want for the day comes down on your back. None of this is a complaint. It is the price of a bay with no crowd, and it is a fair one.

The gentler way in, and the smart move for two who would rather not sweat the descent, is the seasonal water taxi from Agios Georgios Pagon across the bay, which drops you on the sand and agrees a time to collect you. Either way, go early or late. In the middle of a July day the twin bays draw walkers and boat trips and the magic thins. Come for the first swim of the morning or stay for the soft late light, with the wind on one bay and stillness on the other, and Porto Timoni gives you the rare thing on a popular island, a beautiful shore that still feels like a secret.

Clubs near this beach

Porto Timoni has no club or bar on the sand. The nearest food and shade sit up in Afionas, and the organised beach with sunbeds and water sports is Agios Georgios Pagon across the bay. Prices and hours move with the season, so ask when you enquire.

Tavernas in Afionas

Tavernas in Afionas village

The village above the bay has tavernas and a canteen near the trailhead, places such as Anemos and Zeus Throne, where you can eat with the view and stock up before the walk down. Use them for shade and supplies rather than a beach club. Hours and prices to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

Northwest coast, Corfu

Porto Timoni lies below Afionas on the northwest coast, around fifty minutes from Corfu Town by car. Drive to the village, park where you can near the centre, and follow the path down from the end of the lane past the tavernas. The descent is steep and rocky, so leave time and good shoes for it.

In summer the water taxi from Agios Georgios Pagon across the bay is the gentle alternative, dropping you on the sand and arranging a pickup. For a couple, the boat in and an early start make the wild bay an easy pleasure rather than a hard day.

Common questions about Porto Timoni

Is Porto Timoni worth the hike?

For a couple who want a wild, quiet bay, yes, it is one of the most rewarding walks on the island. The reward is two back to back beaches of clear water with almost nothing built on them. The catch is a steep descent on loose ground and no shade or facilities below, so it suits walkers more than a casual beach day.

How do you get to Porto Timoni?

The usual way is on foot from the village of Afionas in northwest Corfu, a descent of roughly fifteen to twenty five minutes on a rocky path that starts near the village tavernas. In summer a water taxi also runs from Agios Georgios Pagon across the bay, which spares the climb and is the gentler option for two.

Are there facilities at Porto Timoni?

No. There are no beach bars or sunbeds on the bay itself, so bring water, sun cover and a snack. You can buy supplies at the canteen and the tavernas up in Afionas before you set off. This lack of development is exactly what keeps the place wild and quiet.

Why are there two beaches at Porto Timoni?

Porto Timoni sits on a narrow neck of land, so a beach faces each way and the two share the same isthmus back to back. You can swim on the calmer side depending on the wind and walk a few steps to the other, which is part of what makes it so good for a couple chasing the sheltered water.

When should couples visit Porto Timoni?

Early or late in the day in June or September. Start the walk before the midday heat, or arrive late afternoon when the day trippers have gone and the light softens over the twin bays. Bring everything you need and treat the sea as unsupervised, as there is no lifeguard.
