The calmest swimming beaches in Corfu

The sheltered northeast coves and shallow north bays, and an honest word on why the open west coast is livelier.

Corfu has a quiet secret about its water, and it is all down to which way the coast faces. The prevailing summer breeze on the Ionian comes from the northwest, so the dramatic west coast beaches face straight into it and pick up a small afternoon swell, while the northeast coast sits sheltered behind the island, its bays often glassy from morning to evening. If you want calm, gentle water for a long easy swim, you want the northeast coves and the shallow north bays.

We have ranked the beaches below for calm, weighing shelter from the wind, a gentle entry, and water that stays settled through the day. The Kassiopi coves lead, with neighbouring Barbati close behind, the green sheltered bays of Paleokastritsa for a pretty calm swim, the warm shallow water of Sidari for the very young, and the long gentle bay of Agios Georgios Pagon for space.

The short version: for the calmest, clearest swim head to the northeast coast at Kassiopi and Barbati, take the children to the shallow north bays at Sidari, and treat the lovely west coast as a morning swim before the breeze builds rather than a flat water day.

Ranked for calm water

The gentlest water on the island

Shelter from the wind and a gentle entry first.

01
Northeast coast

Kassiopi

The string of small coves around the harbour village of Kassiopi is the calmest swimming on Corfu, sheltered from the summer wind and clear as glass on a settled day. Kalamionas is a Blue Flag bay with a gentle entry, while Bataria and the smaller coves give you still, bright water for a long easy swim. The pebbles keep the sea clean, so bring water shoes and enjoy the calmest corner of the island.

02
Northeast coast

Barbati

A clear bright bay below the green slopes of Pantokrator, sheltered on the same calm northeast coast and a touch wider than the Kassiopi coves. The water is clean and still on a settled day, lovely for a relaxed swim and a snorkel, with sunbeds and tavernas along the front. The shore is white pebble rather than sand, so pack shoes, but for calm clear water it is among the best on Corfu.

Northwest coast

Paleokastritsa

The green cliffed coves of Paleokastritsa fold into the headlands in a way that keeps their water sheltered and calm despite the west coast setting, which is why this beauty swims so gently. The bays are clear and cool, fine for a relaxed float and a snorkel around the rocks, and small boats ferry you to quieter coves nearby. Busy in high summer, so come early for the calmest, clearest water.

04
North coast

Sidari

The shallow bays at Sidari shelve so gently and warm so quickly that they are the calmest choice for toddlers and nervous swimmers, with every facility a few steps from the sand. It is developed and busy rather than pretty, the honest trade, but for warm, calm, shallow water with sunbeds and tavernas close by it does exactly what a family needs on a gentle swimming day.

Northwest coast

Agios Georgios Pagon

A long sandy bay in the quieter northwest that shelves gently and gives swimmers room to spread out, calmer than the open west coast though not as sheltered as the northeast. The water is gentle on a settled morning and the sand is soft underfoot, with sunbeds and tavernas along the front. Watch the afternoon breeze, which can pick up on this more open bay.

The honest read

The honest read for calm water

Calm on Corfu is a matter of geography, not luck. The summer wind comes off the northwest, so the simple rule is that the sheltered northeast coast gives you the flattest, clearest swimming, while the open west coast, for all its beauty, trades a little of that calm for drama and sunsets. If a settled swim is your priority, point yourself at Kassiopi, Barbati and the wider northeast bays, where the water is so often glassy that you can float for an hour without a ripple.

For the very young, the shallow north bays are the gentlest of all. Sidari shelves so slowly that a toddler can paddle far out in warm calm water, and the easy facilities make a long day simple. Keep half an eye on the afternoon breeze, which can ruffle the more open bays even in the north, and remember that conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and lifeguard cover is seasonal, so keep children within reach in the water.

Be honest about the west coast. Glyfada, Pelekas, Myrtiotissa and Issos are some of the loveliest beaches on the island, but they face the wind and can build a small swell by the afternoon, so they are best swum early if you want them calm. There is nothing wrong with that lively water for a confident swimmer, and the morning sea is often beautifully flat, but if you have come to Corfu for reliably gentle swimming all day long, the northeast coast is the honest answer.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the calmest beach in Corfu?

The sheltered coves around Kassiopi on the northeast coast are the calmest, with Kalamionas a Blue Flag bay and the smaller coves clear and still on a settled day. Barbati nearby is similarly gentle. The northeast coast sits in the lee of the prevailing summer wind, which is why its water is so often glassy compared with the open west coast.

Why is the northeast coast of Corfu calmer than the west?

The prevailing summer breeze on the Ionian comes from the northwest, so the west coast faces straight into it and picks up afternoon swell, while the northeast coast sits sheltered behind the island and across the narrow channel from the mainland. That shelter keeps bays like Kassiopi, Barbati and Nissaki calm for swimming through most of the day.

Are the west coast beaches in Corfu too rough to swim?

Not too rough, but livelier. Glyfada, Pelekas, Myrtiotissa and Issos are beautiful and often calm in the morning, then the breeze can build a small swell by the afternoon. They are fine for confident swimmers and fun for older children, but if you want reliably flat water all day, choose the sheltered northeast coast instead.

Where is the calmest shallow water for young children in Corfu?

The shallow bays at Sidari in the north shelve very gently and stay warm and calm, which suits toddlers, and Kalamionas at Kassiopi has an easy entry too. Agios Georgios Pagon is a long bay that shelves gradually. Keep an eye on the afternoon breeze, which can ruffle the more open bays, and keep children within reach in the water.

When is the sea calmest in Corfu?

Early in the day and in the shoulder months of June and September, when the wind is lighter and the sea settles overnight. Mornings are almost always calmer than afternoons, so for the flattest swim aim to be in the water early, especially on the more open west coast beaches. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
