The best party beaches in the world

A party beach is only worth the trip if the water is worth the swim. We have ranked the world's liveliest shores the way a marine naturalist reads a coast, by clarity, sand, reef and tide, then judged whether the scene improves the day or just crowds the sea. Here are the best, in order, with the overrated ones named.

The verdict

  • Who it is for. Anyone who wants a beach with a pulse but refuses to swim in murky water, the dance floor and the snorkel in a single day.
  • The pick. Kendwa in Zanzibar, the rare full moon party beach with water clear enough to swim at any tide. For the Mediterranean, Nissi in Cyprus.
  • The one thing to know. The most overrated is Copacabana, a glorious scene fronting rough, cloudy water. For a real swim, move one headland to Ipanema.
The brief

Why these made the list

I read a beach by its water and its shore before its speaker stack. Clarity, sand grade, reef and seagrass, the entry, the shade and the tide decide where a beach sits, and only then does the scene tip it up or down. A famous strip with a great sound system and a mediocre sea will always rank below a plainer bay where the swimming is extraordinary.

That is why the order here will surprise people who rank by reputation alone. The clearest, most swimmable party beaches rise to the top, the tide ruled flats and the cold glamour beaches sit in the middle, and the legendary scenes with poor water sink to where the sea, not the legend, puts them. Where a celebrated name is oversold I say so, and point you to the better stretch nearby.

The ranking

The best party beaches, in order

Thirty shores where the night is loud and the day is worth a swim, ranked by the water first and the scene second, each with the honest verdict and the single thing to know.

1
Kendwa at Zanzibar, TanzaniaPhoto: allanporai via Google
Zanzibar, Tanzania

Kendwa

Most of Zanzibar empties at low tide into a long walk over seagrass flats. Kendwa is the exception, a deep water pocket on the northwest tip where you can swim at any state of the tide over clean white sand. The full moon parties are real and loud, yet the next morning the water is still glassy and warm, and the Zanzibar beach clubs run right down the sand. It takes the top spot because it is the rare party beach a naturalist would also choose for the swim.

Flic en Flac at West Coast, MauritiusPhoto: Katya Vttk via Google
West Coast, Mauritius

Flic en Flac

A broad reef sheltered lagoon on the west coast where the water sits flat and clear over pale sand, with live coral and reef fish a short fin from shore. The strip behind it is the liveliest on the island, busy with bars and weekend crowds served by the Mauritius beach clubs, but the sea never pays for it. It ranks second only because Kendwa swims well at every tide while Flic en Flac is best an hour either side of high water.

Nissi Beach at Ayia Napa, CyprusPhoto: Markos Tiris via Google
Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Nissi Beach

The engine of Ayia Napa nightlife and, improbably, one of the clearest shallows in the Mediterranean, a luminous turquoise band you can wade across to a small islet. Foam parties and the Cyprus beach clubs run all summer, yet the water stays bright because the sand is fine and the bay is gently flushed. It sits third because the swimming is shallow rather than deep, a place to float and watch fish more than to strike out.

Beau Vallon at Mahe, SeychellesPhoto: Liudmila Ianchuk via Google
Mahe, Seychelles

Beau Vallon

The social heart of Mahe, a long open bay where the island actually gathers around a Saturday market, dive boats and sundowner bars. The water is clean and swimmable, deeper than the postcard granite coves, though the open aspect can pick up swell in the trade season. It places fourth because it trades a little clarity for that exposure, but no party beach in the Indian Ocean balances scene and swim more honestly; the Seychelles beach clubs sit a short stroll back.

5
Mondello at Palermo, SicilyPhoto: Eric Jeanluca via Google
Palermo, Sicily

Mondello

Palermo's own crescent, a pale half moon of soft sand and shallow, almost tideless water that turns the whole bay a milky aquamarine. By night the lidos and aperitivo bars fill, by day the shallows are warm and calm enough for children and snorkellers alike. It ranks here because the water is genuinely lovely; the only mark against it is summer density, so come early before the city arrives and the Sicily beach clubs fill.

Pampelonne at Saint Tropez, French RivieraPhoto: tasten steff via Google
Saint Tropez, French Riviera

Pampelonne

The most famous club beach in Europe, three kilometres of fine sand fronting clear, gently shelving water off Saint Tropez. The legend is the long lunch and the daybed at the French Riviera beach clubs, not the marine life, yet the sea is cleaner and clearer than its reputation suggests. Sixth because you pay for the scene as much as the swim; the public stretches between the clubs give you the same water for nothing.

Kaanapali at Maui, HawaiiPhoto: Numero equivocado via Google
Maui, Hawaii

Kaanapali

A resort party strip that happens to sit on excellent water: at the Black Rock end the snorkelling over the lava is among the best you can reach from a sunbed. The cliff dive ceremony and the beach bars bring the crowd, the turtles and reef fish bring the substance, and the Maui beach clubs line the sand. Seventh because the swimming and snorkelling are first rate, a rare honest pairing of nightlife and natural water.

8
Camps Bay at Cape Town, South AfricaPhoto: The chefs via Google
Cape Town, South Africa

Camps Bay

The most beautiful scene on this list and one of the coldest swims, a glamorous white sand strip under the Twelve Apostles where the bars and palm promenade are the point. The Atlantic here runs genuinely frigid, so most of the crowd at the Cape Town beach clubs admires the water rather than enters it. It ranks eighth on looks and atmosphere alone; bring a wetsuit if you actually want to get in.

9
Pereybere at North Coast, MauritiusPhoto: Tanja Jortikka via Google
North Coast, Mauritius

Pereybere

A small, lively public bay in the north with calm, clear, reef protected water that swims better than its busier neighbours. It is the local choice for a swim with a drink afterwards, less polished than Flic en Flac but with cleaner shallows. Ninth because the beach is compact and fills fast, yet the water quality is among the best of any town beach here; the wider Mauritius beach clubs are minutes away.

Bondi at Sydney, AustraliaPhoto: Fiona Harlow via Google
Sydney, Australia

Bondi

A genuine ocean beach with a city's social life poured onto it, clean cool surf, a famous flagged swimming zone and the Icebergs pool at the south end. The water is honest Pacific, bracing and lively, with rips that demand you swim between the flags. Tenth because the scene is unmatched for a city beach and the Sydney beach clubs back it, though the swell makes it a swimmer's beach rather than a floater's.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Mamita's Beach

The beach club epicentre of Playa del Carmen, warm Caribbean water and soft sand fronting a row of day to night venues that define the Riviera Maya scene. The sea is clear and bath warm, though seagrass and the odd sargassum tide can reach the shore in summer. Eleventh because the water is good but seasonal; check the sargassum reports before you commit the day, then pick from the Riviera Maya beach clubs.

Seven Mile Beach at Negril, JamaicaPhoto: Randolfo Santos via Google
Negril, Jamaica

Seven Mile Beach

Negril's long west facing ribbon, calm clear water, soft sand and a sunset that the cliff bars have built a whole culture around. The swimming is easy and the reggae runs late, a gentler party than the Mediterranean strips but a real one served by the Jamaica beach clubs. Twelfth because the water is reliably calm and clear; the only caveat is that development crowds parts of the sand.

Cabbage Beach at Paradise Island, BahamasPhoto: Sedrick Longpre perreault via Google
Paradise Island, Bahamas

Cabbage Beach

Paradise Island's party beach, a bright turquoise strip backed by the big resorts with jet skis, vendors and music all day. The water is genuinely beautiful, clear and warm, but the eastern end is busy and commercial in a way the quieter Bahamian beaches are not. Thirteenth because the sea delivers while the scene is loud; walk east for cleaner, calmer water away from the crowd, or settle in at the Bahamas beach clubs.

14
Liscia Ruja at Costa Smeralda, SardiniaPhoto: Spiaggia di Liscia Ruja via Google
Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Liscia Ruja

The longest beach on the Costa Smeralda and its most social, fine pale sand and that famous Sardinian water, clear as gin over a sandy floor. The clubs draw the yacht crowd yet the swimming stays superb, deeper and cleaner than most scene beaches. Fourteenth because the water is exceptional; you simply pay Costa Smeralda prices for the sunbed, with the Sardinia beach clubs setting the tone.

Playa d'en Bossa at Ibiza, SpainPhoto: M A via Google
Ibiza, Spain

Playa d'en Bossa

The longest beach on Ibiza and the spiritual home of the island's daytime party, lined end to end with the clubs that made its name. The water is clear and shallow, decent for a cooling dip between sets, though the proximity to town and airport means it is never wild or pristine. Fifteenth because the scene clearly leads the swim; the Ibiza beach clubs are the draw, while the north coast coves hold cleaner water.

Miami Beach, Florida

South Beach

The original see and be seen sand, wide and pale with warm, clear Atlantic water that swims better than its glossy reputation implies. The crowd, the pastel lifeguard towers and the Ocean Drive scene are the draw, not the marine life, with the Miami beach clubs running the show. Sixteenth because the water is genuinely warm and clean, even if you came for the parade rather than the swim.

Waikiki at Honolulu, HawaiiPhoto: Husnain Sadiq via Google
Honolulu, Hawaii

Waikiki

The world famous city beach, gentle reef calmed water, beginner surf and a sunset bar scene that has run for a century. The swimming is easy and warm, the water clear if not pristine given the crowds, and the longboard waves are made for first timers. Seventeenth because Waikiki is about the warm, forgiving water and the scene together; the Oahu beach clubs hold the sunset.

JBR Beach at Dubai Marina, UAEPhoto: Carlos Alberto do Amaral via Google
Dubai Marina, UAE

JBR Beach

Dubai Marina's social beach, a groomed strip of pale sand and warm, flat Gulf water fronting a wall of restaurants and the busiest Dubai beach clubs. The sea is bath warm and calm, clean enough for an easy swim, though the Gulf lacks the clarity and life of an ocean reef. Eighteenth because the water is comfortable rather than remarkable; you come for the buzz and the warm dip, not the snorkel.

Surfers Paradise at Gold Coast, AustraliaPhoto: Mushfika Immi via Google
Gold Coast, Australia

Surfers Paradise

The Gold Coast's headline strip, a long open surf beach with a high rise skyline and a nightlife to match it. The water is clean Pacific surf, patrolled and lively, with the swell and rips that come with a true ocean beach. Nineteenth because the scene is enormous and the water honest, though the towers behind it make it feel more city than coast; the Gold Coast beach clubs keep it loud.

Faliraki at Rhodes, GreecePhoto: Radoslaw Lorens via Google
Rhodes, Greece

Faliraki

The package party capital of the Dodecanese, a long sandy bay with clear, calm Aegean water that is genuinely good for swimming once you look past the bars. The shallows are warm and gentle, well suited to a daytime float before the night gets loud at the Rhodes beach clubs. Twentieth because the water quietly outperforms the resort's reputation; the noise is the cost, not the sea.

Christ Church, Barbados

Dover Beach

The beach behind St Lawrence Gap, the south coast's nightlife strip, with clear Caribbean water and a reef breeze that brings small waves and bodyboarders. The swimming is good, the sand soft, the bars and the Barbados beach clubs a short walk inland. Twenty first because the water is clean and fun rather than glassy calm; the Gap's energy is the real attraction.

Bavaro at Punta Cana, Dominican RepublicPhoto: Joey Spendlove via Google
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Bavaro

The resort party coast of the Dominican Republic, palm fringed white sand and warm turquoise water inside a long protective reef. The swimming is calm and clear when the sargassum stays away, and the all inclusive scene at the Punta Cana beach clubs runs day and night. Twenty second because the water is lovely but seasonally interrupted by weed; the reef keeps it calm, the season decides the clarity.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Doctor's Cave Beach

Montego Bay's famous bathing club beach, a sheltered strip of clear, calm water that built its name on its supposed healing clarity a century ago. The reef protected swimming is genuinely good and the scene is sociable rather than wild, close to the Jamaica beach clubs. Twenty third because the water is calm and clean inside the cove; you pay a small entry and trade space for that shelter.

Paje at Zanzibar, TanzaniaPhoto: Lucrezia Calderaro via Google
Zanzibar, Tanzania

Paje

The east coast's kite and party beach, a wide tidal flat of white sand and luminous shallow water that draws a young, sporty crowd. At high tide the lagoon swims beautifully; at low tide it retreats far over the seagrass, which is the rhythm of this coast. Twenty fourth because the water is gorgeous but tide ruled, a place to plan your swim around the chart and the Zanzibar beach clubs around the wind.

Tulum, Mexico

Playa Paraiso

Tulum's most photographed sand below the ruins, soft and white with clear Caribbean water and the beach club scene that made the town a byword for it. The swimming is warm and pretty, though sargassum and erosion have troubled this coast in recent seasons. Twenty fifth because the water can be glorious or weed strewn depending on the week; the Tulum beach clubs, for better or worse, never stop.

Ipanema at Rio de Janeiro, BrazilPhoto: Santiago Rodriguez via Google
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ipanema

Rio's most stylish sand and a far better swim than its famous neighbour, clean Atlantic water with real surf and the posto culture that organises the whole beach. The waves are lively, the current real, the scene endless from morning football to sunset at Arpoador. Twenty sixth because the water, while energetic, is cleaner and clearer than Copacabana's, the honest pick of the two; the Rio de Janeiro beach clubs follow the sand.

Coogee at Sydney, AustraliaPhoto: David Goldstein via Google
Sydney, Australia

Coogee

A friendlier, more sheltered cove than Bondi, with cleaner, calmer water, ocean pools at each end and a clutch of pubs that make it Sydney's easygoing party beach. The swimming is the best of the eastern beaches for those who want surf without the rips. Twenty seventh because the water is calm and clear and the scene relaxed; it is the swimmer's alternative to its louder neighbour, near the same Sydney beach clubs.

Junkanoo Beach at Nassau, BahamasPhoto: Sara N via Google
Nassau, Bahamas

Junkanoo Beach

Nassau's walkable city beach, a short man made strip of bright water and busy bars right by the cruise port. The sea is warm and clear in patches, but the harbour setting and the crowds mean it is the scene, not the swim, that brings people to the Bahamas beach clubs. Twenty eighth because the water is the weakest of the Bahamian entries here; go for the easy access and the party, not the snorkel.

Copacabana at Rio de Janeiro, BrazilPhoto: Amine Benfatta via Google
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Copacabana

The most legendary party sand on Earth and, to a naturalist, the most oversold water on this list. The crescent and the mosaic promenade are genuinely magnificent, but the sea is often churned, murky and rough, and the rips are serious. Twenty ninth because the scene is unbeatable while the water is the opposite of inviting; for a real swim move one headland to Ipanema, and leave the Rio de Janeiro beach clubs for the evening.

Accra Beach

Rockley on the south coast, a lively local favourite with clear water, a small reef and a gentle break that suits swimmers and bodyboarders alike. The bars and food vans give it a weekend buzz without the package gloss of bigger resorts, with the Barbados beach clubs nearby. Thirtieth not because it is weak but because it is the quietest party on a strong list; clean water, easy scene, a fine place to end.

Honest notes

How to swim well at a party beach

The single best habit is to separate the swim from the scene by the clock. The water at almost every beach here is calmest and clearest in the first hours of the day, long before the speakers warm up. Swim early, photograph early, then let the afternoon belong to the bar.

Tide is the other quiet ruler. On the Indian Ocean flats of Paje and parts of Zanzibar the sea can retreat half a kilometre over seagrass, so a beautiful lagoon becomes a long walk at the wrong hour. Read the tide chart before you plan the day, and treat all conditions as typical rather than guaranteed; flags and lifeguards know the water better than any ranking.

Finally, respect the reef and seagrass that make these waters clear in the first place. Wear reef safe sunscreen, fin gently over coral, and take nothing from the shallows. The beaches that still swim beautifully are the ones whose visitors have trodden lightly, and that is how they stay worth the trip.

Questions, answered

Common questions

What is the best party beach in the world?

For the rare combination of a real party and water clean enough to swim at any tide, Kendwa in Zanzibar takes it. Flic en Flac in Mauritius and Nissi Beach in Cyprus are close behind for clarity. The best one for you depends on whether you want a deep swim, a turquoise wade or simply the loudest sunset.

Which party beach has the clearest water for swimming?

Kendwa, Flic en Flac and the Costa Smeralda's Liscia Ruja have the clearest, most swimmable water of any beach on this list, with Nissi the brightest of the shallow turquoise bays. These are the places where the snorkel earns its space in the bag, not just the speaker. Always treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed and check the local flags.

Which party beaches are overrated?

Copacabana is the clearest example, a magnificent scene fronting rough, often murky water with serious rips. The honest move is to admire the promenade and then walk one headland to Ipanema for a far better swim. Playa d'en Bossa and Junkanoo Beach are also scene first, with water that trails their fame.

When is the best time to visit a party beach?

Two habits serve every beach here: swim early when the water is calmest and clearest, and party later once the sand fills. For tide ruled beaches like Paje and Kendwa, plan the swim around high water. Shoulder season brings the same warmth with fewer crowds and better value.

Are party beaches good for families by day?

Many are, before the night scene starts. Mondello, Nissi and Bavaro have warm, shallow, gentle water that suits children in the morning, while ocean beaches like Bondi and Surfers Paradise carry surf and rips that demand the flagged zones. Match the beach to the swimmer and keep an eye on the posted conditions.
