The single most useful thing to understand about Vietnam's beaches is that the monsoon flips as you travel the coast. The south, including Phu Quoc, is dry and calm from roughly November to April and wet from May to October. The central coast around Da Nang and Hoi An reverses that, at its best from about February to August and stormy from September into December. Nha Trang sits in between with a long dry spell and a wet late autumn. Choosing the coast that is in its dry season matters far more than choosing between two good beaches.
The quiet quality usually sits away from the famous city sand. Da Nang's My Khe is a magnificent urban beach, but the softest water and whitest sand are on Phu Quoc in the far south, and the calmest swimming near Nha Trang is up the coast at Doc Let or out on the bay islands rather than on the busy main beach. Beyond this list, the central beach of An Bang near Hoi An and the remote island of Con Dao reward travellers who want something gentler and less developed again.
Vietnam's beaches are still finding their balance between rapid resort building and their natural calm. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, the sea state and the surf both shift with the season, and a beach that swims beautifully in its dry months can be rough and grey in its wet ones.
