Phu Quoc is Vietnam's big tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, and its beach club scene is built around one thing, the sunset. The whole west coast strip of Long Beach, known as Bai Truong, faces due west, so as the afternoon fades the bars fill with people who came for the show. This is a value island rather than a glossy one, where most places are free to walk into and the spend is a drink in your hand, though a couple of smarter clubs offer daybeds and a fuller day if you want it.

Every venue below is a real, established place described by the day it delivers. Because the model here is mostly free entry beach bars, your cost is at the bar, with Sunset Sanato the main exception charging a small, often redeemable entry. Daybed fees and any minimum spend at the smarter clubs move with the season, so we keep them as to be confirmed. The smartest cheaper move is a beanbag at Rory's or Ocsen with a sunset cocktail, which is the island at its best and barely dents the budget.

When to go

When the clubs are best in Phu Quoc

The dry season from November to April is the prime stretch, with calm seas, clear skies and the best sunsets, and the December to March peak the busiest and priciest. The wet season from May to October brings afternoon downpours and rougher water on the west coast, though mornings can still be bright and the island is quieter and cheaper. Whatever the month, the late afternoon into sunset is the moment the Long Beach bars are built for, so plan your day around the west facing light.

How to book

Getting a daybed, the honest way

Phu Quoc is relaxed about it all. For a drink at the sand bars you can simply turn up, and the only place you pay to enter is Sunset Sanato, where the small fee is often redeemable. The one thing worth booking is a daybed at Sailing Club or a sunset table at a busy bar during the December to March peak, when the front rows go early. On Sao Beach, beat the midday day trip crowds by arriving early or late for the calmest white sand.

Dress is barefoot and easy, swimwear with a light layer for dinner. If you want us to confirm a daybed, a sunset table or any minimum at one of these venues, send your date and party size through the form below and we will pass it on, at no cost to you.

Before you go

A few essentials

Long Beach is a short taxi or grab ride from Duong Dong town and the airport, so a base here puts the sunset bars on your doorstep. Sao Beach in the south is about an hour away and best reached by taxi or a hire scooter. Bring small dong notes for the bars, the sand is soft and the water warm and generally calm in the dry season, and the west coast can turn choppy in the wet months. Carry water and sun cover for the tropical heat.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach club in Phu Quoc?

On Long Beach, Sailing Club is the most complete daybed club and Sunset Sanato the most photographed, while Rory's and Ocsen are the laid back sand and beanbag bars for a sunset drink. In the south, Paradiso sits on the white sand of Sao Beach. The honest answer is that Phu Quoc is a sunset island, so the best club is the one with the spot you want as the sun goes down.

How much does a Phu Quoc beach club cost?

Phu Quoc is good value. Many beach bars are free to enter and you simply buy a drink, while Sunset Sanato charges a small entry of roughly 100,000 to 200,000 dong, often redeemable against a drink. Daybeds at the smarter clubs carry a fee or a minimum spend that we mark as to be confirmed because it shifts by season and day. The cheap route is a beanbag and a cocktail at sunset.

Where are the Phu Quoc beach clubs?

The main cluster lines Long Beach, called Bai Truong, the long west coast strip that catches the island's famous sunsets, where Sailing Club, Sunset Sanato, Rory's and Ocsen all sit. Sao Beach, or Bai Sao, in the south is the postcard white sand bay and home to Paradiso. The two are about an hour apart, so most visitors base on Long Beach and day trip to Sao.

Do you need to book a Phu Quoc beach club in advance?

For a drink at the bars you can almost always just turn up. For a daybed at Sailing Club or a good table for sunset, booking ahead in the December to March high season is wise as the front rows fill. Sao Beach gets busy with day trippers around midday, so arriving early or late gives you the calmest sand. Outside peak it is easy going.

Which Phu Quoc beach is best for sunset?

Long Beach is the sunset coast without question, facing due west so the whole strip glows in the evening, and the bars there are built around the moment. Sunset Sanato is the showpiece for photos, while Rory's and Ocsen are the relaxed picks for a drink on the sand. Sao Beach faces east and is better for a bright morning swim than an evening, so plan sunsets on the west side.
