The pattern that emerges is clear. The beaches that charge the most, whether a national park fee at Maya Bay or a boat charter to a hidden cove, are not automatically the best, and several free public beaches deliver the same turquoise water with none of the markup.

A four kilometre arc of soft golden sand and clear water a short ride north of El Nido town, with a fraction of the boats and none of the lagoon ticket queues. It takes the top spot for delivering the El Nido dream without the El Nido scrum. Verdict: the smart traveller skips a second island hopping tour and spends a free day here instead, with a coconut from a beach shack as the only cost. Go on a weekday and it is close to empty.

Krabi

Railay Beach

Cut off from the mainland by limestone cliffs and reached only by longtail boat, Railay West is a postcard of pale sand, warm shallows and towering karst. It ranks high for sheer drama and an easy boat hop rather than a costly charter. Verdict: the short boat fare is fair value for a beach this beautiful, and the climbers and sunset crowd give it life. Stay over to have the dawn sand to yourself, since the day boats from Ao Nang arrive mid morning and the prices on the sand climb with them.

Boracay

White Beach

The four kilometre stretch of powder white sand that made Boracay famous, now cleaner and better managed after its rehabilitation. It ranks for the quality of the sand and the easy walkable scene of bars and stations behind it. Verdict: a small environmental fee applies and the sunset strip is not cheap, but the beach itself is free to walk and the sand is genuinely world class. Stay at the quieter Station 1 end and you get the best sand away from the loudest bars.

Phuket

Freedom Beach

A short tail of fine sand and clear water tucked below the headland near Patong, reached by a steep path or a quick longtail. It ranks as the best swimming beach near Phuket's busy west coast, far calmer than the strip it hides behind. Verdict: arrive by the path and it costs nothing, while the boat from Patong is a small fare worth paying to skip the scramble. Bring your own water and snacks, because the few vendors here charge a captive price for the privilege of paradise.

Long Beach

Phra Ae, known as Long Beach, is a relaxed two kilometre stretch on the laid back island of Koh Lanta, with soft sand, easy swimming and a string of mellow beach bars. It ranks as the best value beach day in the Andaman, with space to spread out and no ticket gate. Sao Beach

A curve of fine white sand and calm jade water on the south of Vietnam's island of Phu Quoc, with a few simple beach clubs and palm shade. It ranks for the quality of the swimming and the value of a beach that still feels gentle despite the island's fast development. Verdict: a sunbed and a seafood lunch here cost a fraction of the equivalent in Thailand, which is the whole point. Gili Trawangan

It ranks for the rare mix of beach, reef and a no traffic calm broken only by bicycles and pony carts. The long city beach of Da Nang, a wide sweep of soft sand backed by a modern promenade, famously easy to reach and free to enjoy. It ranks as the best value city beach in the region, clean, swimmable and a short hop from the old town of Hoi An. Verdict: this is the anti resort beach, where locals and travellers share free sand and a cheap seafood dinner behind it. The honest read on Southeast Asia is that fame and price have decoupled from quality. The beaches that cost the most in fees and boat charters, like the managed icons of the Andaman, are no longer reliably the best, while long free public beaches such as Nacpan, Long Beach on Koh Lanta and My Khe in Da Nang deliver the same warm turquoise water with no gate and a far lower bill. The markup hides in two places, the captive vendors on hard to reach coves and the sunset bars on the famous strips, so bring your own water to the hidden beaches and pick your bar carefully on the busy ones.

Who should skip what? If you want calm clear swimming on a budget, prioritise Koh Lanta, Phu Quoc and the Gili islands over the pricier headline spots. If you are chasing the iconic photograph, accept that Maya Bay now means a park fee, a boat tour and a managed crowd, and treat it as a short stop rather than a day. If you want the El Nido scenery without the El Nido queues, Nacpan does it for free. The classic mistake is paying for tour after tour when one quiet free beach and an early start would have been the better day.

Timing matters more than money here. Most of the region runs on a monsoon calendar, so the Thai Andaman coast and the Philippines are at their best from roughly November to April, while Vietnam's central coast around Da Nang swims best from about February to August. Sea conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, currents on the open beaches can be strong in the wrong season, and any local swimming notice is the final word, so check the flags and the forecast before you commit to a long boat day.

For our money it is Nacpan Beach near El Nido in Palawan, a long free sweep of golden sand and clear water that gives you the El Nido dream without the lagoon ticket queues. The honest answer depends on what you want, since Railay in Krabi wins on drama and White Beach on Boracay wins on the quality of the sand, but Nacpan wins on the balance of beauty, calm and value.

Which Southeast Asian beaches are overrated?
