Verdict: the best all round summer island, with a beach for every mood, good food and a real island to explore beyond the sand, though the famous spots like Balos and Elafonisi are busy and need an early start. Hire a car, base in the west for the best beaches, and Crete rewards a full week or two.

Sardinia

Sardinia has the clearest water in the Mediterranean, pale soft sand and shallows that glow turquoise from the famous La Pelosa to the long beaches of the south coast. The Algarve is the great cliff backed beach coast of Europe, golden sandstone, sea caves and sheltered coves of soft sand along Portugal's southern edge. Verdict: the best choice for dramatic scenery with easy family access, sunny and well organised with short transfers, though the Atlantic is fresher to swim than the Mediterranean and the central resorts get busy. Mallorca

Mallorca is the all round Balearic island, where pine fringed calas of clear water on the north and east coasts sit a short transfer from the airport. Verdict: the best balance of beach quality and convenience, with gorgeous coves, a beautiful interior and everything well served, though the prettiest calas are small and fill fast in peak summer. Getting a European summer right

The single biggest lever is timing. July and August bring the warmest sea and the most reliable sun, which is exactly why they bring the heaviest crowds and the highest prices. June and September deliver almost the same warmth and a warm sea with noticeably thinner crowds and softer rates, which is why we point most travellers there. The famous beaches, the lagoons of Crete, the calas of Sardinia and the coves of Mallorca, are best in the first hour of the day before the boats and buses arrive.

Match the destination to the holiday you want. For wide easy family sand and short transfers, the Algarve, Mallorca and Corfu are hard to beat. For the clearest water, Sardinia and Menorca lead. For a lively, social beach scene, Mykonos, Ibiza and the Costa del Sol deliver. And remember that some of the most famous islands, Santorini above all, are about the views rather than the swimming, so choose them for the scenery and pair them with a true beach base.
