The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want the daybed, the long lunch and the right crowd on a European coast, whether the mood is barefoot chic or full party.
  • The pick. Club 55 in Saint Tropez for the original, Scorpios in Mykonos for the sunset, and La Fontelina in Capri for the swim.
  • The one thing to know. Most European clubs charge through a daybed rate or a minimum spend that climbs steeply in July and August, so confirm the terms before you book.
The brief

Why these made the list

The beach club was more or less invented on the French Riviera and then reinterpreted, island by island, across the Mediterranean. Europe still sets the standard, whether your idea of the perfect day is raffia parasols and crudites on Pampelonne, a driftwood daybed and a sunset set in Mykonos, or a dive off the rocks beneath the Faraglioni at Capri.

We have ranked the clubs that define the European scene and added the practical truth to each. Almost none are cheap, and the way you pay varies from a daybed rate to a food and drink minimum that rises sharply in peak season, so we tell you what to expect and never invent a figure. Where the mood has tipped from stylish to overrun, we say so.

The ranking

Europe's best clubs, in order

Europe invented the beach club and still does it best, from the raffia and rose of the French Riviera to the sunset rituals of the Greek islands and the cliffside calm of Capri. These are the clubs worth planning a day around, ranked, with the honest word and how to get in.

1
Wooden tables and parasols under the pines at Club 55 on PampelonnePhoto: Tanja Petry via Google
Pampelonne, Saint Tropez

Club 55

The beach club that started the whole genre, a former film crew canteen on Pampelonne that became the byword for barefoot Riviera chic, all wood, raffia and crudites rather than bottle service. Verdict: the original and still the most charming, though prices match the legend, so book lunch well ahead, arrive by boat if you can, and let the afternoon drift.

2
Driftwood daybeds and a sunset crowd at Scorpios on MykonosPhoto: Catalin Catalin via Google
Mykonos, Greece

Scorpios

A headland of driftwood daybeds, ritual sunset DJ sets and a Cycladic boho aesthetic that the rest of the world has spent a decade copying. It peaks as the music builds into dusk. Verdict: the most atmospheric club in Greece and the one to time for sunset, so reserve a bed ahead and expect a serious minimum on a prime summer day.

Sun terraces on the rocks beneath the Faraglioni at La Fontelina, CapriPhoto: Debra Powell via Google
Capri, Italy

La Fontelina

No sand at all, just sun terraces bolted to the rocks beneath the Faraglioni stacks, where you dive into deep blue water and lunch on linen between swims, reached on foot or by boat. Verdict: the most romantic swim club in the Mediterranean and pure Capri theatre, expensive and bookable only by phone, so plan ahead and bring shoes for the rocks.

Psarou, Mykonos

Nammos

The temple of conspicuous Mykonos, where megayachts anchor off Psarou and magnums arrive with sparklers at lunch. It is loud, glossy and unapologetically about money. Verdict: the place to people watch at the top of the European market, thrilling or exhausting depending on your mood, with eye watering minimums in August, so go knowing exactly what it is.

Blue parasols and clear water at La Guerite on the island off CannesPhoto: La Guérite Cannes via Google
Cannes, France

La Guerite

Hidden on the wooded island of Sainte Marguerite off Cannes, reached by a short boat hop, with tables at the water's edge, a Greek leaning kitchen and a long, musical lunch. Verdict: the most charming escape on the Riviera, less flashy and more fun than the mainland clubs, so book ahead, plan the boat, and let lunch run into the afternoon.

Pool, daybeds and a party crowd at O Beach Ibiza in San AntonioPhoto: O Beach Ibiza via Google
San Antonio, Ibiza

O Beach Ibiza

A pool party club rather than a calm beach lounge, with big name DJs, podium dancers and a high energy crowd on the San Antonio sunset strip. Verdict: the spot for an all out party day in Ibiza, brilliant if that is the brief and overwhelming if it is not, so book a bed for space, expect a minimum, and pace yourself for a long one.

Ibiza, Spain

Amante

The grown up alternative on Ibiza's quieter east coast, a cliffside terrace and restaurant above the cove at Sol d'en Serra, all calm, views and good food. Verdict: the island's most beautiful daytime club and a welcome break from the party machine, ideal for couples, so book a table for the view and come for lunch and a swim rather than a rave.

Mallorca, Spain

Purobeach Palma

The original Purobeach, a white on white sea facing lounge on a promontory near Palma with a pool, daybeds, sunset DJs and a chilled, stylish crowd. Verdict: the most polished urban beach club in the Balearics and an easy day out from the city, less wild than Ibiza, so book a daybed in season and come in the late afternoon for the sunset session.

White daybeds and Champagne service on the sand at Nikki Beach Saint-TropezPhoto: Nikki Beach Saint Tropez via Google
Saint Tropez, France

Nikki Beach

The original of the global white clad, Champagne spray brand, born on Pampelonne and still the template for the party beach club. Verdict: pure high energy theatre, fun for a celebration and divisive for purists, with steep minimums in season, so reserve a bed, decide whether you want a party or a quiet swim, and choose your spot accordingly.

Carpe Diem Beach

The original Hvar day club, set on its own islet a short boat ride from the town, with a pool, loungers, restaurants and a party that runs from a lazy lunch into the night. Verdict: the definitive Dalmatian club day, polished and lively, with boat transfers from Hvar, so plan the crossing and confirm any entry or minimum for the day you want.

Macakizi

The soul of glamorous Bodrum, a boutique hotel above Turkbuku whose jetty and terraced restaurant pull a chic Istanbul crowd to the Aegean. Verdict: the definitive Turkish beach club day, all long lunches and deep water swims off the platform rather than sand, so book a daybed well ahead in summer and confirm the terms and lunch sitting directly.

El Chiringuito

A whitewashed, laid back beach restaurant and lounge on the long natural beach of Es Cavallet, away from the party strip, with loungers on the sand and a Mediterranean kitchen. Verdict: the relaxed, grown up face of Ibiza and a lovely lunch and swim, so book a table or a bed in season and come for the calm rather than the spectacle.

Honest notes

How European clubs charge, and how to play it

The first rule is that you rarely just pay to walk in. The top European clubs charge through a daybed or sunbed rate, a food and drink minimum spend, or both, and those numbers climb sharply from June to September and on weekends. We never quote a figure we cannot stand behind, so where a club's terms shift by season we tell you to confirm directly when you book.

Booking ahead is everything in peak months. The best beds, front rows and prime lunch sittings at Club 55, Scorpios, Nammos and La Fontelina go to those who reserve early, sometimes weeks ahead in August, and several, including La Fontelina, take bookings only by phone. Turning up on spec on a hot weekend is how you end up turned away or seated at the back.

Match the club to your mood, because Europe offers both extremes. Scorpios, Amante, La Guerite, Carpe Diem and El Chiringuito are about atmosphere, views and a long lunch, while Nammos, O Beach and Nikki Beach are about energy and spectacle. Neither is better, but they are very different days, and the common mistake is booking the party club when you wanted the calm one.

Questions, answered

Common questions

What is the best beach club in Europe?

It depends on the day you want. Club 55 in Saint Tropez is the charming original, Scorpios in Mykonos is the most atmospheric for sunset, Nammos is the place to people watch at the top of the market, and La Fontelina in Capri is the most romantic for a swim. The best one is the club whose mood matches yours, calm or full party.

How much does a European beach club cost?

Most charge through a daybed rate, a minimum spend on food and drink, or both, rather than a flat entry fee, and prices rise steeply in July and August. Because these terms change by season and are often unpublished, we mark them to be confirmed and suggest checking directly when you book rather than relying on a quoted figure that may be out of date.

Do you need to book a beach club in advance in Europe?

In peak season, absolutely. The best daybeds, front rows and lunch sittings at the famous clubs sell out, sometimes weeks ahead in August, and a few, such as La Fontelina in Capri, take bookings only by phone. Booking also locks in your minimum and avoids being turned away on a busy weekend, so reserve ahead whenever you can.

Which European beach clubs are best for a party?

O Beach Ibiza, Nikki Beach in Saint Tropez and Nammos in Mykonos are built for high energy days with DJs, pools and spectacle, and Carpe Diem off Hvar runs from lunch into a night party. If you want a livelier scene these deliver, but go in knowing they are loud and busy. For calm, look to Amante, La Guerite or El Chiringuito instead.

Which European beach clubs are best for couples?

Amante on Ibiza's quiet east coast, La Fontelina on the rocks at Capri, La Guerite on its island off Cannes and El Chiringuito at Es Cavallet all trade spectacle for views, calm and a long romantic lunch. They are the antidote to the party clubs and far better suited to a couple who want to swim, eat well and watch the light change over the sea.

Are European beach clubs worth it?

If the club itself is the experience you want, yes. At their best they deliver a complete day of good food, the right crowd, music and water you want to swim in, which a public beach cannot match. If you mainly want sand and sea, the public beaches nearby are often free and lovely, so it comes down to whether you are paying for the atmosphere.
