on the Amalfi Coast
Kayaks, diving and boat tours along a vertical coast.
The verdict
- Best forActive travellers who want to kayak the cliffs, dive a clear cove or take a boat tour, and who understand this is not a wind or wave coast for board sports.
- Top pickMarina di Praia for diving and boat trips, with sea kayaking from the Praiano and Positano coves the most rewarding way to explore.
- One thing to knowThe Amalfi Coast is sheltered and steep, so there is little surf, kitesurf or windsurf. The watersports that suit it are kayaking, diving, snorkelling and boat tours, so plan for those.

Set expectations first, because the Amalfi Coast is a scenery coast, not a board sports one. The water is sheltered, the wind is usually light and there is no sandy lagoon for a lesson, so you will not find the surf, kitesurf or windsurf scene of an Atlantic or island destination. What the coast does brilliantly is the water activity that suits a dramatic, clear, cliff lined sea, which means sea kayaking along the rock faces, diving and snorkelling in the clearest coves, and boat tours to the grottoes and hidden beaches.
We have ranked the beaches on how well they work as a base for those genuine watersports, the kayak launches, the dive operators and the boat trip departure points, rather than pretending there is a wave to ride. Marina di Praia leads as a small diving and boat hub, with the Praiano and Positano coves the best places to put a kayak in and paddle to a hidden swim. We are honest where a beach is really just a pretty swim with a boat tour leaving from the next town, so you can plan the active day around what the coast can actually deliver.
Watersports beaches in Amalfi Coast
Scored on kayaking, diving and boat access. Honest verdicts, no invented surf.
Marina di Praia
A sheltered inlet at Praiano that works as a small base for diving and boat trips, with calm water in the pocket and easy launching. The most active little beach on the coast, and a handy departure point for the grottoes near Furore.
Gavitella
A west facing terrace cove with calm, clear water that suits kayaking and snorkelling, and long light for a late paddle. Reached by steps or a shuttle, it pairs an active swim with the coast's best afternoon sun.
Arienzo
A sheltered sun trap cove with some of the clearest water near Positano, ideal for snorkelling and a launch point for paddling to neighbouring coves. Clean entries and good visibility make it a fine active swim.
Maiori
The coast's longest beach gives the most room for casual watersports, with kayak and pedalo hire in season and space to launch. The easiest place to get a family afloat without stairs or a boat transfer.
Cetara
A working fishing village with a small beach and a strong boat culture, a good place to arrange a boat trip and paddle the quieter eastern cliffs. Less polished, more authentic, and calm for a kayak.
Duoglio
A clear pebble cove below Amalfi reached by steps, calm and clean enough for snorkelling and a paddle to nearby inlets. Quieter than the town beach, with good visibility for an active swim.
Who it suits, who should skip
If your active streak runs to kayaking under cliffs, diving a clear cove and taking a boat to the grottoes, the Amalfi Coast is a superb playground, and Marina di Praia, Gavitella and Arienzo are the best bases for it. Sea kayaking is the real highlight, because paddling the rock faces lets you reach coves and arches you cannot walk to, and the clear water rewards a snorkel almost everywhere. Book dives and boat tours ahead in summer, because the operators are small and fill quickly.
Who should skip what? Surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers should look elsewhere, because the sheltered, light wind sea simply does not offer the conditions, and chasing board sports here ends in disappointment. The other honest note is that several beaches are tiny and reached by stairs or boat, so a watersports day with a lot of kit is easiest from the broader, serviced beach at Maiori, where you can hire on the spot and launch from flat ground rather than carrying gear down a staircase.
Where to book a daybed
An active day still wants a base for the kit, the swim and the lunch, and the beaches above mostly have a lido or beach restaurant where you can hire a bed and store your things between paddles. Marina di Praia, Gavitella and Maiori are the most practical bases, with room to launch and a kitchen for after. Tell us the beach and the dates and we will pass your enquiry to the club so they can confirm space and any minimum spend.

Before you go
Can you surf on the Amalfi Coast?
Not really. The coast is sheltered and the wind is usually light, so there is no reliable surf, kitesurf or windsurf. The watersports that suit it are sea kayaking, diving, snorkelling and boat tours, so plan an active day around those rather than board sports.
Where is the best sea kayaking on the Amalfi Coast?
The Praiano and Positano coves are the best launch points, with Gavitella, Arienzo and Marina di Praia all giving calm water and a coastline of arches, grottoes and hidden beaches to paddle to. Guided kayak tours run in season and are the easiest way to explore the cliffs.
Is there diving on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, small dive operators run trips from bases like Marina di Praia, exploring clear coves, rock walls and the occasional wreck. Visibility is good on calm days, though there are no large reefs, so the appeal is the dramatic underwater scenery rather than abundant marine life.
Which beach is best for watersports with a family?
Maiori is the most practical, because its long flat beach has kayak and pedalo hire in season and space to launch without stairs or a boat transfer. It lets a family get afloat easily, then return to a serviced beach with shade and snacks.
Do I need to book boat tours and dives in advance?
In July and August yes, because the operators are small and popular trips to the grottoes and hidden coves fill quickly. In the quieter months you have more flexibility, but booking a day or two ahead still secures the best departure times. Conditions can cancel trips, so allow some slack.
