Marina di Praia is the most theatrical small beach on the coast. It hides at the foot of a narrow gorge slicing into the cliffs below Praiano, a sliver of pebbles between towering rock walls, with fishing boats pulled up at the head of the inlet and a square watchtower standing guard above. You come around a bend on the coast road and there it is, a secret slot of sea.
The honest read is that the setting is the whole point, and space is not. The beach is tiny and pebbled, the cliffs throw it into shade later in the day, and on a peak afternoon it is shoulder to shoulder. What lifts it is everything around the sand: superb seafood restaurants on the water, a path carved into the rock leading to the Africana, a historic dance club set in a sea cave, and clear deep water that rewards a proper swim.
Treat Marina di Praia as an evening as much as a beach, with a long seafood dinner and a swim in the gorge, and visit in the shoulder months or early in the day for room on the pebbles. If you want a sunnier, more open Praiano beach with club service, Gavitella faces the afternoon sun nearby; for the famous village sand head west to Positano and its Spiaggia Grande and quieter Fornillo.
Marina di Praia is a mostly free pebble cove known for dining and the historic Africana club, not a sunbed strip. For full beach club service nearby, see our Amalfi Coast beach clubs directory.
Most of Marina di Praia is free pebbles by the fishing boats, where you can lay a towel at no charge in the gorge. It is very small and fills early in summer, so arrive in the morning for a space on the stones.
Reached by a walkway carved into the cliff from the beach, the Africana is a historic dance club set in a sea cave, long part of Marina di Praia after dark. Opening nights, events and entry are to be confirmed, so check current listings locally.
Marina di Praia lies just below the coast road at Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi. The SITA coast buses stop on the road above, from where a path and steps lead down to the inlet, and in summer boats call here too, a fine way to arrive given the scarce parking.
There is only limited parking by the coast road, so the bus or a boat is often easiest, and the walk down to the gorge is short but steep in places. Bring beach shoes for the pebbles, and consider staying into the evening for dinner on the water under the cliffs.
Marina di Praia is a mostly free pebble cove, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to sunbed hire and full beach clubs around Praiano and the coast. No charge to enquire.
Yes, for the drama and the dining. It is a tiny pebble beach in a striking cliff gorge at Praiano, with fine seafood restaurants on the water and the historic Africana club in a nearby sea cave. Come for the setting more than the space.
Largely, yes. The pebble beach is mostly free, with only limited paid sunbed hire where available beside the restaurants. It is very small, so arrive early in summer for room on the stones.
The Africana is a historic dance club set in a sea cave, reached by a walkway carved into the cliff from the beach. It has long been part of Marina di Praia after dark; opening nights and events are to be confirmed, so check locally.
Yes, the water is clear and deepens quickly off the pebbles, which makes for a lovely swim but suits confident swimmers more than small children. Lifeguard cover is limited, so swim with normal care as conditions are never guaranteed.
June and September bring warm sea and a calmer gorge, before and after the July and August peak. Earlier in the day is best at any time, as the small beach falls into cliff shade later on.
