The honest read

Gavitella is the answer to a complaint every Amalfi regular eventually makes. By four in the afternoon the tall cliffs throw most of the coast into shade, and the swim turns cold. Gavitella faces the other way. Tucked under Praiano and looking west across the water to Positano, it catches direct sun deep into the evening, which is the single reason people climb down to it.

It is not a sand beach. The shore is rock and coarse pebble, dressed up with timber sun decks and a lido that terraces toward the sea. You swim off platforms into clear, deep water rather than wading in from a shallow margin, so it rewards anyone comfortable in open water and frustrates families hunting for a paddling shelf.

The honest read on crowds: late June and the first half of September are the sweet spot, with warm sun, a calm sea, and room to breathe. July and August fill the loungers early and crowd the little bay with day boats from Positano. Mornings are quiet anywhere on this coast, but Gavitella is one of the few places where the late slot is the better one, since the sun stays put while everywhere else cools.

Who should skip it: anyone set on a broad sandy beach, anyone unsteady on steep steps, and anyone expecting cheap. This is a premium afternoon, not a budget one. If that is not you, there are few finer places on the Amalfi Coast to watch the light go gold.

The club layer

Clubs on and near the sand

Gavitella is built around its lido concession rather than a row of competing clubs. The terraced beach club below Praiano runs the loungers, the platforms and a restaurant over the water, and it is the spot most visitors mean when they say they are going to Gavitella.

  • La Gavitella
The lido that defines the beach, with stepped sun decks and a kitchen built for a long lunch. Exact rates and reservation terms to be confirmed.
Getting there and essentials

Praiano sits between Positano and Amalfi on the SS163 coast road. From the village the classic approach is on foot down a long stair that drops from the church of San Gennaro to the water. It is scenic and steep, and the return climb is the part people underestimate.

The gentler arrival is by sea. A short shuttle boat runs from Marina di Praia around the headland to the beach, and in high summer it is well worth the fare to skip the steps in the heat. Drivers should note that parking in Praiano is limited and fills early, so an early start or a transfer pays off.

Common questions

Why does Gavitella get sun later than other Amalfi beaches?

It faces west toward Positano, so the sun reaches it from across the open water rather than over the cliffs behind. While the rest of the coast falls into shade by mid afternoon, Gavitella stays lit into the evening.

Is Gavitella a sandy beach?

No. The shore is rock and coarse pebble with timber sun decks. You swim off platforms into deep clear water, so it suits confident swimmers more than small children.

How do you get down to Gavitella?

Either on foot down roughly four hundred steps from Praiano, or by the short shuttle boat from Marina di Praia. In high summer the boat is the easier choice and spares you the climb back up.

When is the best time to visit Gavitella?

Late June and early September give warm sun, a calm sea and fewer day boats. July and August are busiest, and the late afternoon is the prized slot because the sun lingers.

Do you have to pay to use Gavitella?

There is a public stretch of shore alongside the lido, while loungers, platforms and service at the beach club are paid. Exact prices change by season and are best confirmed when you book.
