The verdict

  • Best for: Strong swimmers and snorkellers chasing the clearest water near Amalfi, who like the idea of a cove you can only reach by boat.
  • Best spot: A lounger at one of the cove beach restaurants, with the natural rock arch a short swim away.
  • Know this: There is no practical road access, so you reach Santa Croce by boat from Amalfi, which keeps it blissfully quiet.

The honest read

Santa Croce is one of the loveliest swimming coves near Amalfi, tucked under steep cliffs just west of the town and reachable only by boat. The reward for the lack of a road is clarity: the water here is among the cleanest and deepest on this stretch of coast, a deep blue green that draws swimmers and snorkellers, with the natural rock arch of Santa Croce a short swim offshore.

The honest read is that it is a pebble cove with sun decks and platforms rather than broad sand, and what space there is splits between a couple of beach restaurants with paid loungers and only limited free pebbles. This is not a place for a big sandy family day, and the water is deep, so it favours confident swimmers. Because the only way in is by boat, it stays quiet, but you plan around the boat times and book a lounger in summer.

The water is the whole point, exceptionally clear and deep, with the arch nearby to swim out to. Come in the shoulder months, arrange the boat from Amalfi and reserve ahead, and treat it as a swimming cove rather than a beach day. For an easier walk in cove try Duoglio nearby, for the central town beach go to Marina Grande, and for a village beach head east to Atrani.

Cove beach restaurants and lidos

Santa Croce few beach restaurants run paid loungers and sun decks above the clear water, with boat landings from Amalfi. They are the comfortable way to spend a day here; reserve ahead in summer, as operators, rates and boat times are to be confirmed.

Limited free pebbles

There is a little free space on the pebbles where you can lay a towel at no charge, but the cove is small and mostly given to the restaurants. Arrive early on the first boats or plan to take a paid lounger.

Getting there and essentials

Santa Croce sits west of Amalfi below cliffs with no practical road to the cove, so the only sensible way in is by boat. Small boats and the launches run by the cove restaurants leave from the Amalfi seafront in season, a short and scenic ride along the base of the cliffs.

Because access depends on the boats, plan around their timetables and book a lounger or table where you can, especially in summer. Bring water and sun protection, as facilities are limited to the cove restaurants, and remember the water is deep, so swim within your comfort.

Common questions

How do you get to Santa Croce beach?

Only by boat. There is no practical road to the cove, so small boats and the launches run by the beach restaurants leave from the Amalfi seafront in season. This is exactly why the cove stays so quiet and clear.

Is Santa Croce good for swimming and snorkelling?

Yes, it is one of the best near Amalfi. The water is among the clearest and deepest on this coast, with the natural rock arch a short swim offshore. The water is deep, so it favours confident swimmers.

Is there a free area at Santa Croce?

There is a little free space on the pebbles, but the small cove is mostly paid loungers run by the beach restaurants. Arrive on the first boats for a free spot or book a lounger in advance.

What is the beach like at Santa Croce?

It is a small pebble cove below steep cliffs, with sun decks and platforms rather than wide sand. It suits swimming and a long lunch over a big family beach day, and water shoes help on the pebbles.

When is the best time to visit Santa Croce?

May, June and September bring warm, settled sea with the cove restaurants and their boats running and lighter crowds than the July and August peak, when boat space and loungers fill fast.
