Marina Grande is the main beach of Amalfi, set right in front of the town below the famous cathedral steps and beside the old marina. It is as central as a beach gets, a few steps from the piazza, the ferry port and the restaurants, which makes it the natural choice if you are staying in Amalfi and want sea and sand without travelling.
The honest read is that this is a town beach, busy and commercial. The sand is the coarse grey volcanic mix of the coast, much of it given to paid lidos at Amalfi prices, with a free public section that fills early. It sits beside the working port, so ferries come and go and it is rarely quiet. You come here for convenience and the setting under the town, not for seclusion.
The water still rewards a swim, generally clear and calm and deepening steadily off the beach. The shoulder months are kinder on both crowds and price, so favour May, June and September and arrive early for the free sand or a lido bed. For quieter water, the coves at Duoglio and Santa Croce are a short boat ride west, and the tiny village beach at Atrani is a few minutes walk east.
Marina Grande mixes a free public area with paid lido sections rather than a single nightclub style beach club. For club style beds and bars, see our Amalfi Coast beach clubs directory.
Much of Marina Grande is run as paid lido sections, with rows of sunbeds and umbrellas and attendant service by the sea. They fill and prices climb in peak season, so reserve ahead where you can; operators and rates are to be confirmed.
A free public area sits alongside the lidos toward the harbour end, where you can lay a towel at no charge. It is the smaller part of the beach and fills early in summer, so arrive in the morning for space.
Marina Grande is in the heart of Amalfi, a few steps from the main piazza and the cathedral, so if you are staying in town you simply walk down to it. Buses along the coast road stop in Amalfi, and parking is in the town garages, as the seafront itself is pedestrian and busy.
The ferry port sits right beside the beach, which makes arriving by boat one of the easiest and most scenic ways into Amalfi in summer. Bring sun protection and arrive early for the free sand or a lido bed, and check seasonal ferry timetables for trips to the nearby coves.
Marina Grande mixes free sand and paid lidos, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right beds and bars along the Amalfi Coast. No charge to enquire.
Partly. There is a free public section, mostly toward the harbour end, where you can lay a towel at no charge, alongside paid lido sections with sunbeds and umbrellas at Amalfi prices. The free zone fills early, so arrive in the morning.
It is the coarse grey volcanic sand and pebbles typical of the Amalfi Coast rather than soft golden sand. Water shoes are useful for comfort both on the beach and when entering the water.
It sits in the centre of Amalfi, a short walk from the piazza and cathedral. Buses stop in town, parking is in the garages, and the ferry port right beside the beach makes arriving by boat easy in summer.
Yes, the water is generally clear and calm and deepens steadily for an easy swim off the beach. Take normal care near the busy port and ferries, as conditions are usually settled but never guaranteed.
May, June and September bring warm, settled sea with lighter crowds and lower lido prices than the July and August peak, when the central beach and its free section fill quickly.
