The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean at a fraction of the price of its neighbours, dramatic coves and lively pebble bays, and who do not mind that most beaches are pebble rather than soft sand.
  • The pick. Gjipe for a wild, clear water cove and an adventurous day, with Dhermi for the best all round beach and the liveliest scene.
  • The one thing to know. The riviera is mostly pebble, so pack water shoes, the famous sandy bays at Ksamil are overrun in peak summer, and the warm season runs from roughly June to September.
The lay of the coast

Pebble, canyon and clear water

The Albanian Riviera is the best value clear water coast in the Mediterranean right now, a run of cliff backed coves and turquoise bays along the Ionian between Vlora and Saranda. The Llogara pass drops you onto it like a balcony, and from there the road threads village beaches, canyon coves and long quiet shores, all on water that rivals anything in Greece or Croatia across the strait.

The trade, as so often on this sea, is the sand. Most of these beaches are smooth white pebble or shingle, which is exactly why the water is so clear, so water shoes are part of the kit. The genuinely sandy spots, the famous little bays at Ksamil and pockets at Himare and Lukove, are rarer, and Ksamil in particular pays for its fame with heavy summer crowds.

We rank on the beach itself, the water, the setting and the kind of day each gives, from the wild canyon cove of Gjipe to the lively turquoise strip at Dhermi and the long quiet sweep of Borsh. We are honest about the catches too, the walk in at Gjipe, the August noise at Dhermi, the paid sunbed crush at Ksamil, so you can pick the right beach for the day you want.

1
The pebble cove of Gjipe at the mouth of a canyon on the Albanian Riviera
Between Dhermi and Vuno

Gjipe

A wild pebble cove at the mouth of a dramatic canyon between Dhermi and Vuno, reached by a walk down a dusty track or by boat, with crystal clear, warm water. Verdict: the closest the riviera comes to a hidden gem and the pick for an adventurous day, with a small seasonal bar and a campsite behind, though there is little shade and the walk in keeps it honest, so bring water and good footwear.

2
The long turquoise pebble beach of Dhermi on the Albanian Riviera
Dhermi

Dhermi

The long, dazzling pebble beach that put the riviera on the map, with smooth white stones, turquoise water and rock formations, plus the liveliest run of beach clubs and summer nights on the coast. Verdict: the best all round day here, beautiful and well served, though it is the loudest stretch in August, so the calm clear water is at the quieter southern end and in the early morning.

3
The relaxed pine backed beach of Drymades near Dhermi on the Albanian Riviera
Dhermi

Drymades

The mellow neighbour just north of Dhermi, a pebble and shingle strip backed by pines and olive trees with easygoing beach bars and a slower pace than the Dhermi club end. Verdict: the spot for a relaxed day with clear water and a sunset drink, popular but never as frantic as its famous neighbour, and an easy walk or short hop from Dhermi when you want the calm rather than the scene.

4
The long quiet beach of Borsh backed by olive groves on the Albanian Riviera
Borsh

Borsh

The longest beach in Albania at around seven kilometres, backed by olive groves and far less developed than the headline coves, with plenty of room and a friendly, local, good value feel. Verdict: the pick for space and a quiet, unshowy day, with simple tavernas and a real sense of room to spread out, though it is a long pebble and shingle shore with limited shade, so bring cover.

5
The sandy turquoise bays and small islands of Ksamil in southern Albania
Saranda

Ksamil

The famous postcard of southern Albania, small sandy bays of turquoise water with little islands you can swim or wade to near Saranda. Verdict: genuinely pretty water, but the most overrated day on the coast in peak season, when the sand is carved almost entirely into paid sunbeds and the crowds are heavy. Come in June or September, or very early, or trade it for the room at Gjipe, Dhermi or Borsh.

6
The long easy beach of Livadhi near Himare on the Albanian Riviera
Himare

Livadhi

A long, easy beach just north of Himare with a mix of fine pebble and sand, calm clear water and a relaxed run of tavernas and small resorts behind it. Verdict: the friendliest, most convenient base on this stretch, gentler and easier to reach than the canyon coves, and a sensible family choice, with the town of Himare and its own beaches a short hop away for variety.

The honest read

Pebbles, crowds and the Ksamil trap

Set your expectations around pebble and you will fall hard for this coast. The reward for the lack of sand is water so clear it looks lit from below, but the practical cost is real, so bring water shoes for the shingle and a mat for comfort. Embrace it and the swimming and snorkelling here are among the best and cheapest in the whole Mediterranean.

Be honest about Ksamil. The water and the little islands really are beautiful, but in July and August the bays are carved almost entirely into paid sunbeds and packed shoulder to shoulder, which is the opposite of the wild Albania people come for. Treat it as an early morning or shoulder season visit, and spend your real beach days at the canyon cove of Gjipe, the turquoise strip at Dhermi or the long room at Borsh.

Timing matters everywhere here. The warm, swimmable season runs from roughly June to September, warmest in late summer, and it peaks hard in a busy July and August when Dhermi turns loud and the roads fill. June and September are the sweet spot, with warm water, long days and far more room, and September in particular is often the best of the year on this coast.

Getting there and essentials

Planning your days

The riviera runs along the coastal road from Vlora in the north, over the dramatic Llogara pass, down through Dhermi and Himare to Saranda and Ksamil in the south. A hire car is by far the best way to reach the coves and link the beaches, while buses and taxis cover the main towns in season. Corfu is a short ferry from Saranda, and Tirana is the main airport, a long but scenic drive away. Transfer times are to be confirmed.

Pack water shoes, a sun hat and plenty of water, because shade is limited on many beaches and the midday sun is strong. Carry some cash for the smaller beach bars and the boat fares, know which beaches are free and which are mostly paid sunbeds, and time the famous spots like Ksamil and Dhermi for early morning to beat both the crowds and the heat.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Which is the best beach on the Albanian Riviera?

Gjipe is the most dramatic and wild, a clear water cove at the mouth of a canyon, while Dhermi is the best all round day with turquoise water and beach clubs. Borsh is the pick for space and quiet, and Ksamil is the most famous but also the most crowded. Choose by the day you want rather than by the postcard.

Are Albanian Riviera beaches sand or pebble?

Most are smooth white pebble or shingle, which is exactly what keeps the water so clear and bright, so water shoes are worth packing. Genuine sand is rarer and is found mainly at Ksamil near Saranda, parts of Himare town and Lukove. The trade of soft sand for clarity is the same deal as much of this stretch of the Mediterranean.

Is Ksamil worth visiting?

The water and the little islands are genuinely beautiful, but Ksamil is the most overrated day on the coast in July and August, when the sand is carved almost entirely into paid sunbeds and the bays are packed. If you go, come very early or visit in June or September, or swap it for the room and the clear water at Gjipe, Dhermi or Borsh.

When is the best time to visit the Albanian Riviera?

The warm, swimmable season runs from roughly June to September, with July and August the hottest and busiest. June and September are the sweet spot, with warm water, long days and far fewer people, and September is often ideal, with a still warm sea and the summer crowds gone. Spring and autumn are pleasant but cooler for swimming.

How do you get around the Albanian Riviera?

A hire car is by far the easiest way, on the coastal road that runs from Vlora in the north over the dramatic Llogara pass down to Saranda in the south. Corfu is a short ferry from Saranda, and Tirana is the main airport, a long but scenic drive away. Some beaches such as Gjipe need a walk in or a boat. Transfer times are to be confirmed.

Does the Albanian Riviera have beach clubs?

Yes, the liveliest are around Dhermi, Drymades and Jale, with summer beach clubs, loungers and DJ nights, while quieter beaches like Borsh keep things simple. We cover the named venues on our Albanian Riviera beach clubs guide and mark prices and minimum spends to be confirmed where they are not published.
