Dhermi
Best for. Travellers who want clear water with proper beach clubs and a social buzz, and who will swim early before the wind and the crowd arrive.
Best spot. The calm morning water off the central sand, then a daybed at one of the styled clubs once the breeze fills in.
Know this. The old village is high above the beach, so factor in the drive down, and expect the open beach to chop up most summer afternoons.
Dhermi is where the Albanian Riviera learned to dress up. A long sweep of pale pebbles below a stone village that clings to the hillside, it is the styled, social, slightly show off heart of the coast, lined with beach clubs and busy with a summer crowd that comes to be seen as much as to swim. The water is clear and lovely, and the setting under the Ceraunian mountains is genuine, but this is a scene beach first and a quiet swim second.
The honest read is about timing the day. Mornings here are a gift. The sea is glass calm and clear, the sand is half empty, and a long swim or a paddle along the shore is the best thing Dhermi offers. By early afternoon the open aspect that makes the beach so bright also lets the onshore breeze fill in, standing up a short chop and pushing people off the water and onto the daybeds. That is the rhythm to work with: swim early, club later. Note too that the old village sits high above the beach, so if you book a room up there, plan for the winding drive or the shuttle down to the sand.
If the club scene is not your thing, you do not have to go far. Walk north and the beach runs on into Drymades, a touch more laid back and bohemian, while a short hop up the coast brings you to the wild canyon cove of Gjipe, the antidote to all the loungers. Dhermi earns its place for the water and the energy. Just go in knowing it is the busy one, and that the calm belongs to the early risers.

Dhermi coast, central Riviera
Dhermi sits on the central Riviera south of the Llogara pass, with the old village high on the hillside and the beach below at the end of a winding road down to the shore. Coast buses between Vlore and Saranda stop on the main road above, from where it is a steep descent to the sand by car, shuttle or a long walk.
Drive over the Llogara pass for one of the great coastal views in Albania, then drop to the beach for a morning swim before the clubs wake up. Parking near the shore fills early in summer, so arrive ahead of the crowd, and carry cash for the smaller bars and kiosks.

Common questions about Dhermi
Is Dhermi beach worth visiting?
Yes, if you want clear water with proper beach clubs and a social scene behind it. Dhermi is the styled, busy heart of the central Riviera. If you prefer a quieter or wilder day, walk north to Drymades or point up the coast to the canyon cove at Gjipe, both close by.
What are the beach clubs at Dhermi like?
They range from lively bars on the sand to a styled adults only beach house. Havana is the social, music led pick, while Sanur Beach House is the most designed spot on the coast, part of a beach resort. Minimum spends are set by each venue and to be confirmed, and they fill fast in July and August.
Where is Dhermi village in relation to the beach?
The old village climbs the hillside well above the sea, and the beach sits below it, reached by a winding road down to the shore. Many people stay near the beach in summer rather than up in the village, so factor in the drive or the shuttle if you book a room up the hill.
Is the water at Dhermi calm?
Mornings are usually calm and clear, ideal for a long swim or a paddle. The beach faces the open sea, so an onshore breeze tends to build through the afternoon and ruffle the surface. Swim early for the glassy water, and use the afternoon for the clubs or a sheltered cove.
When is the best time to visit Dhermi?
June and September give warm water and a lively but bearable scene. July and August bring the warmest sea and the biggest crowds and prices, with the parties at full volume. For the clubs at their best with more room, aim for the shoulder weeks and book ahead.
