Where the tide stays kind to small swimmers and the sand keeps them busy.

The verdict

  • Best forFamilies who want to swim on their own schedule rather than around the tide chart.
  • Top pickKendwa on the north coast, where you can swim at almost any tide.
  • One thing to knowOn the east coast the sea can retreat hundreds of metres, so the north suits young children better.

The single most important thing to understand about a Zanzibar family holiday is the tide. The famous east coast photographs of mirror flats and stranded dhows are real, and they mean that at low tide the sea can be a long, hot walk away across coral rubble and sea grass. That is a magical thing to explore with a bucket, but it is a frustration if your children just want to jump in and swim after breakfast.

The north coast solves this. Around Kendwa and Nungwi the tidal range is far gentler, so the water stays close and swimmable through most of the day. That is why we steer most families to the north, then add a few east coast and reef lagoon options for those who like the drama of the tide and the calmer water behind the reef at high water.

We have ranked the beaches by how easy they are to actually enjoy with children, weighing swimming access, shade, facilities and how relaxed each stretch feels. Every entry links to the full beach guide so you can check the honest read on crowds, nightlife and access before you book a week beside it.

Ranked for swimming with kids

Six beaches that work for families

Swimmable water and easy sand come first.

01
North

Kendwa

The family favourite for a reason. Kendwa's gentle tidal range means children can swim through most of the day, the sand is soft and wide, and the sunsets are the best on the island. It is livelier than a hidden cove but never overwhelming for kids.

02
North

Nungwi

Just around the headland from Kendwa, Nungwi keeps the same kind tides and adds the widest choice of restaurants, dhow trips and a turtle aquarium that children love. Pick the quieter southern end if you want to keep them away from the busier bars.

03
East

Pongwe

A sheltered crescent ringed by reef, Pongwe is calm and shallow, with few sellers and a quiet, low key feel that suits younger families. The tide still moves, but the lagoon holds enough water to paddle and float for much of the day.

04
Northeast

Matemwe

A long reef lagoon that turns into a warm shallow paddling pool at high tide, Matemwe is relaxed and uncrowded. It faces Mnemba island, so older children can snorkel, while the village feel keeps the whole stretch gentle and unhurried.

East

Kiwengwa

A long resort lined beach with plenty of room to run, Kiwengwa gives families the security of full service hotels and watersports on tap. The tide still walks out, so time your swims, but the breadth of sand keeps everyone busy.

Day trip

Nakupenda

Not a place to stay but a glorious half day out, Nakupenda is a sandbank that appears at low tide for a barefoot picnic and easy snorkeling. Treat it as a boat excursion treat rather than a base, and go early before the day boats gather.

The honest read

The honest read for parents

Here is the honest read. If you book the postcard east coast at Paje or Bwejuu expecting an all day swimming beach for toddlers, you will spend a lot of the holiday watching the sea sit a few hundred metres away. Older children often love the low tide world of starfish and sandbars, but small swimmers do better on the north coast where the water actually stays put. Match the beach to the age of your children and the trip transforms.

Nungwi is the other thing worth saying plainly. It has the best facilities for families by day, but parts of it run lively into the night around the bars, so choose your hotel's position carefully if early bedtimes matter. Kendwa is calmer overall yet still has a famous full moon party, so check the dates before you book if a quiet week is the goal.

Finally, sun and reef shoes. Shade is limited on the open north coast beaches, the equatorial sun is strong, and the coral rubble on east coast flats is sharp underfoot at low tide. A cheap pair of reef shoes and a beach tent or umbrella will do more for a young family's week than almost any hotel upgrade.

The club layer

Beach clubs and hotel bases

See Zanzibar beach clubs

Family days on Zanzibar tend to run through hotel beaches and a handful of relaxed beach bars rather than formal clubs, and the north coast has the densest cluster of places where you can settle in for lunch and a swim. Our directory lists the venues and beach bases we can verify, with anything we cannot confirm marked to be confirmed so you never plan a day around a spot that may have changed hands. Use it to find a calm lunch stop near Kendwa or Nungwi, then send an enquiry below and we will pass it to the venue to confirm tables, loungers and any minimum spend.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Zanzibar beach is best for young children?

Kendwa on the north coast, because its gentle tidal range keeps the water swimmable through most of the day. Nungwi nearby is similar with more facilities. Both spare you the long low tide walk that defines the east coast.

Why does the tide matter so much in Zanzibar?

On the east coast the tidal range is large, so at low tide the sea can retreat hundreds of metres across reef flats. It is fun to explore but hard for small swimmers. The north coast has a far smaller range, which keeps the water close.

Is Nungwi too lively for a family?

It depends where you stay. Nungwi has the best family facilities by day but parts run busy at night around the bars. Choose a hotel away from the main strip, or pick calmer Kendwa, and it works well for families.

Are there calm reef lagoons for paddling?

Yes. Pongwe and Matemwe sit behind reefs that create warm shallow lagoons, lovely for paddling at high tide. They are quieter than the north coast beaches, with fewer sellers, which suits younger families who want a gentle pace.

Should we bring reef shoes?

Definitely. Coral rubble and sea grass on the east coast flats are sharp underfoot at low tide, and reef shoes make rock pooling and wading far more comfortable for children. Pack sun shade too, as the open beaches offer little.
