If Grande Saline is the wild one and St Jean is the busy one, Flamands is the grand one. Drive down through the village on the northwest tip of the island and the bay opens wide and pale below you, a long sweep of soft sand that is broader than any other beach on St Barths and, for a couple who came for space and light rather than a scene, quietly the most romantic. Two elegant hotels sit along it, yet the beach never feels like a resort strip, because a public right of way and a small car park drop you straight onto open sand in the middle of the bay. You can settle into a lounger with proper service, or walk five minutes to a quieter end and have the sea largely to yourself.
The honest caveat at Flamands is the water. This is an open coast facing the sea to the northwest, so it catches more swell than the sheltered bays, and on many days the waves roll in nicely for body surfing and boogie boarding while a shore break slaps at the sand. Down to the bay
Anse des Flamands sits on the northwest tip of St Barths, reached by the road that runs down through the village of Flamands, only about ten minutes by car from Gustavia. A public right of way and a small parking area off the coastal road in the middle of the bay give open access to the sand for everyone, not only hotel guests. A hire car or taxi is the practical way in, as there is no useful public transport to the beach, and the roadside spaces fill early.
On the public stretch bring water, sun cream and shade, and take your rubbish away.
