St Jean is the beach that most people picture when they picture St Barths, and for once the reputation is earned. It sits in the middle of the island's north coast, a long soft curve of pale sand backed by boutiques, cafes and some of the most famous beach clubs in the Caribbean. A reef runs across the mouth of the bay, so the lagoon inside is usually calm and shallow near the shore, which makes it one of the easier beaches on the island to simply swim and float. The Sand Bar at Eden Rock. An elegant beachfront lunch under a famous name, more relaxed than its reputation suggests. Come for one lovely meal by the water rather than a full day, and reserve ahead in season.
Gyp Sea. A relaxed feet in the sand lunch in the heart of St Jean, the easy going choice of the three. Still a St Barths price, but a warmer and less showy way to eat by the beach.
The value read is simple. Any of these is a treat worth having once, and none of them is needed to enjoy St Jean. In the middle of the island
St Jean sits centrally on the north coast, a short drive from the capital Gustavia over the hill, and right beside the island airstrip. Most visitors reach it by rental car or scooter, which is the cheapest way to get around St Barths, since taxis are limited and pricey. There is roadside and small lot parking near the bay, busiest around the club end, so arriving earlier in the day makes for an easier space and a calmer beach.
Bring your own shade, water and a picnic from an island grocery if you want to keep the day cheap, as everything bought at the beach carries a premium.
