Yalos is a set built from salvage. The entrance is a driftwood gateway, weathered planks stood on end like a beachcomber’s arch, and beyond it the space is dressed with rough wood, forgotten fishing boats reworked into furniture and a rusted camper van parked in the sand like a prop that never left. It reads as accidental, the look of a place assembled from what the sea gave back, but every worn plank is placed, and the effect is one of the more considered pieces of styling on the island. This is a bar that has decided exactly what it wants to look like and committed to it down to the last coil of rope.

Our honest take, which matches how we frame it on the Santorini club directory, is that Yalos reads best as a design and a kitchen rather than as a beach in its own right. The cove it sits on is quiet and small, a local fishing shore under Fira, and the reason to come is what the bar has made of it, the boho theatre, the fish service and the light off the calm water, not a headline stretch of sand.

The styling is the first thing to say, because it is what Yalos is selling. The rusted van, the boat hulls turned into benches and the driftwood everywhere give the place a lived in, salt washed character that photographs beautifully at any hour, and there is a genuine pleasure in a bar composed with this much intent. It leans on a warm, vintage register, closer to a Mediterranean film set than a slick club, and it earns its following on that alone.

Here is where the photographs quietly mislead. Yalos does not sit under the famous caldera, and the water in the pictures is not the deep drama of the west coast. This is Exo Gialos, the calm little fishing cove directly below Fira, a beach of dark volcanic sand and pebbles that our own Exo Gialos guide describes as one of the quietest, most local shores on the island. The upside is real, the bay is so sheltered the sea often lies flat and clear, ideal for an easy swim between courses, but anyone arriving expecting golden sand or a cliff top view has read the styling as the setting.

The kitchen is the substance under the set. Yalos runs a Greek and Mediterranean menu built around fresh fish, and its signature is a whole fish, frequently red snapper, carried to the table and filleted in front of you with a little theatre. It is very good and it is not cheap, sold by weight so the bill climbs with the size of the fish, which is the single thing to check before you order. Come at the turn of the day and the reward is the hour Yalos does best, the light going amber over the calm water while a curated house set lifts the mood into a soft, grown up sundown rather than a hard party.

Exo Gialos is the closest proper beach to Fira, a working fishing cove reached in about five minutes down the hill, with a small harbour, a taverna or two and very little else. It has always been a residents’ beach rather than a resort, calm and quiet by nature, which is exactly why Yalos stands out so sharply against it. Exo Gialos lies just below Fira on the east coast, a drive of roughly five minutes from the town centre, with parking near the cove that fills on a hot day. There is no direct bus to the beach itself, so a car, a taxi or a short transfer is the simplest way down, and it makes the trip home after a long lunch far easier.
