Beach Bar
The kitchen led, softly lit calm on a black sand strip that everywhere else turns up the volume.
The verdict
- Book ifYou want the styled but relaxed corner of Perivolos, wooden beds under palm shaded canopies, a real kitchen and an evening that stays mellow
- Skip ifYou came to the party beach for the party, the louder all day clubs a few doors along will suit you far better
- One thing to knowThe draw here is the food and the light, not a dance floor, so treat it as a long lunch that drifts into a soft lit dinner

Chilli plays a clever visual trick against the dark volcanic sand. Where a pale beach lets furniture disappear, Perivolos is charcoal black, so the bar stages white sofas, wooden beds and cream cushions that read as bright cut outs against the ground, then floats triangular canopies and clumps of palm above them for shade and shape. To a design eye it is one of the more deliberately composed setups on this strip, a bar that understands its backdrop and dresses to contrast with it rather than blend in.
Our honest position, the same one we hold on the Santorini club directory, is that Perivolos is the island's party beach and most of its venues chase that energy, while Chilli quietly does the opposite. It is the food led, calmer address on a loud strip, and that restraint, more than any single dish or cocktail, is what makes it worth choosing.
Chilli at a glance
Taken from Chilli’s own website and recent Santorini guides, with any figure the bar does not publish kept as to be confirmed instead of invented.
| What | The detail |
|---|---|
| Sunbeds | Wooden beds with large cushions under canopies, priced by row and season and often tied to a food and drink spend, with no fixed card published, so to be confirmed as you book or arrive |
| Minimum spend | Not published as a set figure, commonly a consumption based use of the beds, to be confirmed for peak dates |
| Entry | No stated door charge, you walk in from the Perivolos sand |
| Reservations | Taken through Chilli’s own reservations page and by phone, worth doing for a front bed or a table in high summer |
| Dress code | None published, beachwear by day with something a little smarter easy to wear into the softly lit dinner service |
| Season and hours | Summer season, open from morning through to late evening per the bar, exact daily hours to be confirmed |
| The beach | Perivolos, long black volcanic sand on the southeast coast with water that deepens fairly quickly |
| Food and bar | Full kitchen from breakfast and sandwiches to grilled meats, pasta, risotto, burgers, pizzas and salads, with cocktails and wine |
The light, the kitchen and where it stays quiet
The best hour at Chilli is the turn of the evening. Through the day the white furniture and canopies sit crisp against the black sand under hard Aegean sun, which photographs beautifully but runs hot, and then as the light drops the bar shifts its lighting to something warmer and lower and the whole space softens. That deliberate evening mood is the design signature Chilli sells, and it is genuinely lovely, though it also means the middle of a July afternoon is the least flattering time to arrive.
The kitchen is the substance behind the styling. Chilli presents itself as a restaurant as much as a beach bar, one of the oldest hospitality names on the island by its own account, and the menu is broad: breakfast and sandwiches early, then grilled meats, pasta and risotto, burgers, pizzas and salads through the day, with a serious cocktail and wine list. On a strip where many bars treat food as an afterthought to the music, this is the place that treats the plate as the main event.
Where it falls short depends entirely on what you wanted. This is not the Perivolos party, and anyone arriving for a loud all day club will find Chilli too gentle and should look to the bigger neighbours or read our Santorini sunset guide for a different mood. The black sand also runs genuinely hot underfoot at midday and shelves into deeper water sooner than a shallow bay, so it suits confident swimmers and shade seekers more than paddling toddlers.
Perivolos, beyond the canopies

Photo: Chilli Lounge bar via GooglePerivolos is the long southern extension of the black sand that begins at Perissa, the widest and most developed of Santorini's volcanic beaches and the island's headline strip for beach clubs. The dark sand stores the heat, the open water off it is clearer and deeper than the sheltered bays elsewhere on the island, and a near continuous line of bars, tavernas and sunbed operators runs the length of it. Our full Perivolos beach guide covers the swimming, the walk from Perissa and the quieter ends of the strip.
The practical part
Perivolos sits on the southeast coast, a drive of roughly twenty minutes from Fira, and the local bus toward Perissa and Perivolos drops you within reach of the strip, though a car or taxi is easier if you plan to stay into the softly lit evening. Booking at Chilli runs through its own reservations page and by phone, and for a front bed or an evening table in July and August it is worth securing rather than trusting to a walk up, which is more reliable in the shoulder months.

Chilli questions, answered
Do you need to book a sunbed at Chilli Beach Bar in Santorini?
Chilli runs its own reservations page and takes bookings by phone, and on the busy Perivolos strip a front row of beds is worth reserving for July and August weekends. Outside the peak you can usually walk up and take a bed, which is part of why regulars rate Chilli as the easier going choice on this stretch. Booking ahead also lets you confirm the day rate.
How much does a sunbed cost at Chilli Beach Bar?
Chilli does not print a fixed sunbed tariff, and the price moves with the season and how close to the water you sit, often tied to a food and drink spend rather than a flat fee. Because those numbers change year to year we hold the figure as to be confirmed and suggest you ask at the bar or when you reserve.
What beach is Chilli Beach Bar on?
Chilli sits on Perivolos, the long black sand beach on the southeast coast of Santorini that runs on from Perissa. The sand is volcanic and dark, the water deepens fairly quickly off the shore, and Chilli is one of a line of bars and clubs strung along the strip rather than a beach of its own.
Is Chilli Beach Bar a party club?
Less than most of its neighbours. Perivolos is known as the island's party beach, but Chilli leans on its kitchen and a calmer, softly lit evening mood rather than a hard club night, which is exactly its niche on a loud strip. If you want the full Perivolos party, the bigger all day clubs a few doors along push harder into the night.
Does Chilli Beach Bar serve food?
Yes, and the food is the point here. Chilli describes itself as a restaurant as much as a beach bar, running a full menu from breakfast and sandwiches through grilled meats, pasta and risotto to burgers, pizzas and salads, alongside a long cocktail and wine list. It is one of the more kitchen serious spots on the Perivolos sand.
