The biggest beach story on Santorini this season is a change of address. Theros Wave Bar, the driftwood and stone hideout that spent close to twenty years making Vlychada feel like the island’s best kept secret, has packed up and reopened on Mesa Pigadia, a cove tucked under the cliffs near Akrotiri on the southwest tip of the island. The bar announced the move on its own site with the promise that the spirit stays the same, and the early signs are exactly that: sunbeds by clear water, fish on the grill, a playlist that respects the sound of waves.
In our Santorini club directory Theros holds the top spot for setting, and the move has not cost it that crown, it has traded carved white cliffs for a wilder, quieter corner of coast. What the move has changed is the practical stuff: the drive, the booking route and the neighbours. This page covers the new reality.

What the move changes, and what it does not
What carries over is the reason people crossed the island for this place. Theros was never a party machine, it was the bar you found at the end of a dusty road and told only your favourite people about. The formula stays: beds by the water, ouzo and cocktails, and a kitchen that treats lunch seriously, fresh seafood and Greek and Mediterranean plates that independent listings describe carrying straight over to the new address. The music still leans house, played at a volume that lets the afternoon stretch rather than pound.
What changes is the landscape and the logistics. Mesa Pigadia is rawer than Vlychada, a working cove with dark sand, a handful of tavernas and cliffs that glow toward evening, and it sees fewer casual passersby, which suits the bar’s hideout character. The flip side is the settling in period. The website is a single page while the new one is built, published prices do not yet exist for the new location, and the events and photo record that two decades at Vlychada built up now describe a beach the bar no longer sits on. Check the social feeds for the current look rather than old search results.
The honest caveat is the clock. With listed hours of 10:30 to 19:30, Theros now runs as a day venue that closes around golden hour, so if your Santorini evening means watching the sun drop with a glass in hand at the water’s edge, confirm timings for your date before building the night around it. For a swim, a long seafood lunch and a slow afternoon on a wilder shore, it remains one of the island’s easiest recommendations.
Mesa Pigadia, beyond the beds
Photo: Mesa Pigadia Taverna via Google
Photo: Theros Wave bar via GoogleMesa Pigadia is the kind of beach Santorini regulars keep for themselves, dark sand and pebble under high pale cliffs, water that is typically clear and deepens quickly, and a headland that keeps the crowds of the southeast strip out of sight and mind. Beyond the bar’s beds the cove stays simple, a couple of tavernas and fishing boats rather than a promenade. Our full Mesa Pigadia beach guide covers the swimming, the light and how it compares with Red Beach around the corner.
The practical part
The cove sits below Akrotiri on the island’s southwest tip, around half an hour by car from Fira and comfortably under that from the southeast resorts. A rental car or taxi is the sensible route, the final approach to the water moves slower than the main roads, and some of the Akrotiri boat excursions run along this same stretch of coast if you would rather arrive by sea. Red Beach and the Akrotiri archaeological site are both close enough to fold into the same day.
Booking is refreshingly analogue while the new website is built: call +30 22860 82861 or write to info@theroswavebar.gr, and concierge listings suggest getting in touch two to three days ahead for peak dates. If you would rather have it handled, leave your date and group size in the form below and we will chase the beds, the cabana and the current rate with Theros on your behalf, free of charge.

Before you go
Where is Theros Wave Bar now, did it leave Vlychada?
Yes. After close to twenty years on Vlychada, Theros Wave Bar announced on its own site that it has reopened at a new home on Mesa Pigadia beach in the Akrotiri area of Santorini. The spirit is the same, an all day beach bar and restaurant on a dramatic stretch of coast, but the address, the drive and the cove around it are new for 2026.
What are Theros Wave Bar’s opening hours?
The bar lists daily hours of 10:30 to 19:30 at the new Mesa Pigadia location. That makes it a day and early evening venue rather than a night spot, so plan it as a long beach day that ends around the golden hour rather than dinner and dancing.
How do you book a sunbed at Theros Wave Bar?
While the new website is being built, booking runs the old fashioned way: phone +30 22860 82861 or email info@theroswavebar.gr. Concierge listings suggest asking two to three days ahead for peak dates. Bed and cabana rates at the new location are not published, so we mark them to be confirmed.
What is the food like at Theros Wave Bar?
The kitchen has always been the reason to stay past your swim, fresh seafood and Greek and Mediterranean plates served to the table or the sunbed. Independent listings describe the same seafood led menu carrying over to Mesa Pigadia, with cocktails and a house leaning playlist through the afternoon.
How do you get to Theros Wave Bar at Mesa Pigadia?
Mesa Pigadia sits below the cliffs near Akrotiri on the southwest tip of Santorini, around half an hour’s drive from Fira and a short hop from Red Beach. Come by rental car or taxi, and treat the last stretch to the cove as slower going than the main roads. Some Akrotiri boat trips also call in along this coast.
