Ask in Naoussa where to spend an organised beach day and the answer that keeps coming back is Santa Maria. The bar of the same name is the long standing operation on this sand, a sun and cocktails outfit whose entire pitch fits in one line from its own site: the sun, the sand and a drink in your hand. Loungers run along shallow, glassy water, the barman doubles as the DJ booth’s neighbour once summer arrives, and the whole thing works precisely because it does not try to be Mykonos.

The day here has a rhythm you can set a watch by. Mornings belong to families and swimmers, because the shallow sandy entry is about as gentle as the Cyclades gets and the early water sits flat as glass. From lunch the tempo lifts, the cocktail orders overtake the coffees, and by mid afternoon the livelier stretch of the beach has a proper hum, with windsurfers working the breeze off the point and a volley game running behind the umbrellas. If you want the quiet version of this beach, it exists, but it is in the morning or along the free stretches, not at the bar at five.

For couples the geography deals an unusual hand. This coast looks northeast across open water at Naxos, which means no sunset over the sea, ever, and we would rather tell you that plainly than let the golden hour disappoint you. What you get instead is arguably lovelier: low evening light pouring across the bay, the Naxos hills going violet, and a far emptier beach than the west coast sunset spots. Swim early, take the last drink late, and finish the evening in Naoussa’s harbour ten minutes away.

The weak points are honest ones. The bar publishes no prices at all, for beds or drinks, so budgeting requires either a phone call or a shrug. The meltemi hits this open coast harder than the sheltered bays, and on strong days the chop sends everyone to Monastiri. And in August the sociable stretch is simply loud, which is either the point or the problem, depending on who you brought.

The sand runs in a long pale curve broken by low rock into a string of small bays, so a five minute walk changes the whole mood, from music and loungers to a pocket with two towels and nobody else. Small Santa Maria waits around the corner for the tucked away version, and seasonal showers and tavernas serve the organised sections. From Naoussa it is roughly ten minutes by car or scooter around the bay, with a summer bus on the route and small boats crossing in season. Parking gathers on the dirt roads behind the beach and the nearest rows fill by late morning in peak weeks, so park early or park back and treat the walk as part of the arrival. Booking barely exists here in the formal sense, and that is most of the charm: beds go to the early, and the bar asks only that bigger groups make contact ahead of time.
