Palawan is one of the most beautiful coasts in Asia, and it is honest to say from the start that it is not built for buckets and spades the way a resort beach is. A great deal of what makes the province famous, the lagoons of El Nido and the clear lakes of Coron, is reached by boat and is about kayaking, swimming and snorkelling in deep water rather than a shallow paddle off a long beach. With small children, the easy postcard is not always the easy day.
That said, Palawan does have genuine family beaches if you know which ones to choose. Near El Nido, Las Cabanas and Nacpan are real stretches of sand reached overland, with beach bars for shade and food and gentle water on a settled day. Off Coron, the white sand islands like Malcapuya and the cove at Banol give children shallow, sheltered water, though they come at the price of a longer boat day. The trick is to pick the sand and skip the deep lagoons until the children are older.
We have ranked the beaches below for what actually matters with a family: shallow, sheltered water, somewhere shaded to escape the midday sun, and the practicalities of getting there, parking the boat or van, and finding a toilet and a snack. The most photographed lagoon in Palawan is rarely the one that survives contact with a tired four year old, and we have ranked accordingly.
Each beach links to its full guide so you can check the access, the boat times and the honest read on shade, crowds and conditions before you commit the family to a day there.
Six Palawan beaches that work with children
Sheltered, shallow and easy to reach matters more than the perfect photo when the kids are small.
Las Cabanas Beach
The simplest family day in El Nido, a short tricycle ride south of town to a curve of sand with beach bars for shade, food and a base near the water. The sea is gentle on a calm day and the sunset is the area's best, so come early or mid afternoon for a quiet family stretch before the evening crowd. The zipline across the bay is fun for older children, and younger ones lose nothing by staying on the sand.
Malcapuya Island
One of the prettiest classic beaches near Coron, a white sand island with shallow, clear water that is gentler than the lakes and lagoons on a settled day. Base near the tree line for natural shade behind the sand. It is a longer boat crossing from town with only basic facilities, so choose a calm forecast and an early boat, and bring water, snacks and everything you need for the day.
Nacpan Beach
A long sweep of golden sand about an hour north of El Nido, far roomier and calmer than the island hopping stops, with a few simple food shacks. Base near the southern headland for the gentlest water and the nearest food, and bring a sun shelter as shade is limited. Hire a van or shared transfer with children rather than a tricycle on the rough road, and pair it with quieter Calitang beach over the headland for a change of scene.
Banol Beach
A small, friendly cove on the Coron island hopping route, with picnic huts you can rent for shade and a base on the sand. The water is sheltered and the mood is calm if you visit before or after the midday lunch rush, when the tour boats thin out. Carry a little cash for the entrance and hut fees, often bundled by tours, and pair it with a calmer sandy stop like Malcapuya for a fuller, gentler beach day.
Ditaytayan Island
A quieter Coron island with a long sandbar that grows at low tide for a shallow walk out, which children love. It is about an hour and a half each way from town, so it is a full boat day, and a private boat buys shade, space and an easier pace with little ones. Bring food, water, sun protection and your own shade, since facilities are minimal, and check the tide for the longest stretch of sand.
Seven Commandos Beach
A pretty white sand beach in Bacuit Bay reached only by boat on the El Nido Tour A route, with soft, shallow water near the palms that suits small children. It is lovely on the first morning boat and busy once the tour fleet arrives, so go early and keep the little ones in the gentle shallows while older children snorkel the far end. The bar is simple and shade is patchy, so bring water, snacks and a sun shelter.
Who it suits and who should skip it
Palawan works for families who go in with the right plan. If you accept that the easy days are the sandy beaches near El Nido and the sheltered Coron islands, choose a calm forecast for the boat trips and keep the youngest children on the gentle shallows, you will have a wonderful time on genuinely beautiful sand. The combination of a long beach like Nacpan and a white sand island like Malcapuya gives a family the best of both bases.
Skip the famous deep water lagoons as a main family beach. The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon at El Nido and the Twin Lagoon at Coron are kayaking and swimming adventures framed by limestone, with little or no sand and deeper water, so they suit older children and confident swimmers far more than a toddler. The El Nido town beach is a working harbour for the island hopping boats, busy and shallow at low tide, so it is for the restaurants and the view rather than a family swim.
The honest practicalities are the boats, the shade and the season. Most of the best beaches are an hour or more by boat, so days are long and an early start beats both the crowds and the midday heat. Shade is limited on the remote beaches, so bring your own. And the dry season from around late November to May is the one that gives calm seas and reliable trips, while the wet months can roughen the water and cancel plans at short notice. Use a licensed boat operator, keep children in life vests on the water, watch the boat traffic at the busy stops, and treat a calm forecast as typical rather than promised.
Where a beachfront base earns its keep
Palawan does not run on the European daybed club model, and for a family that is no bad thing. Around El Nido the scene is the simple beach bars and resort frontages at Las Cabanas and Nacpan, where you can take a shaded table, order lunch and keep a base near the water while the children play. Coron's days are built around boat trips rather than a strip of clubs, and the town itself has no real beach. We keep what is genuinely around in the Palawan directory, with minimum spends and amenities marked to be confirmed wherever they are not published, and we never invent a venue or a price. For a family who want a comfortable beachfront base with shade and food rather than a full day on a boat, the Las Cabanas and Nacpan frontages are the better fit. Tell us the area, the date and your party and we pass the enquiry to a beachfront or resort so they can confirm space and any minimum spend.

Before you go
Which Palawan beach is best for young children?
Las Cabanas near El Nido is the easiest, with sand, gentle water on a calm day and beach bars for shade and food, all a short ride from town. Off Coron, Malcapuya and the cove at Banol have shallow, sheltered water on a settled day, though both are reached on a boat trip rather than a walk.
Are Palawan beaches good for families with toddlers?
Some are, with planning. The sandy beaches near El Nido and the calmer Coron islands suit toddlers on a settled day, but much of Palawan is island hopping by boat to lagoons and reefs with deeper water and full days in the sun. Choose the sheltered sand stops, keep little ones in life vests and pack shade.
Do you need a boat to reach family beaches in Palawan?
Not always. Las Cabanas and Nacpan near El Nido are reached overland by tricycle or van, which makes them the simplest family days. The pretty Coron islands like Malcapuya, Banol and Ditaytayan are boat trips of an hour or more each way, so they need an early start and a calm forecast.
Is the water calm and shallow enough for children in Palawan?
On the sheltered islands and coves it usually is, with shallow, clear water on a settled day. The open beaches and the lagoons can be deeper and livelier, so watch the sea, keep children close and in life vests on the water, and remember conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
When is the best time to visit Palawan with a family?
The dry season from around late November to May brings the calmest seas and the most reliable boat trips, with the peak from December to April. The wet months from June to October bring rain and rougher water that can cancel trips, plus a typhoon risk, so the dry season is the safer family bet.
What should families pack for Palawan beaches?
Bring your own shade such as a sun shelter, plenty of water and snacks, reef safe sun cream, water shoes for rocky or seagrass patches, and life vests for the boat days. Carry small cash for island entrance and hut fees, since facilities on the remote beaches are basic and amounts are often to be confirmed.
