Calm in Palawan is not quite the same as calm on a Mediterranean bay, and it is honest to start there. This is a coast of open sea, island crossings and deep limestone lagoons, so the gentlest swimming is found in the sheltered pockets rather than along a long protected shore. The good news is that those pockets are some of the prettiest water in Asia, with shallow, glass clear shallows you can wade into off a white sand island.

For the calmest, shallowest swim we look to the sheltered Coron islands first, where Malcapuya and the cove at Banol give children and gentle swimmers a soft, clear entry on a settled day. Near El Nido, the long beach at Nacpan is gentlest at its southern headland, and Las Cabanas is calm enough for an easy swim before the afternoon breeze and the sunset crowd arrive.

We have ranked the beaches below for genuine calm and a gentle entry, not just for a pretty photo. The deep lagoons of El Nido and the clear lakes of Coron are wonderfully still, but they are deep water you swim or kayak across rather than a shallow paddle, so we have been clear about which is which. Read the sea on the day, keep children in life vests on the water, and treat a calm forecast as typical rather than promised.

Ranked for calm water

Six of the gentlest swims in Palawan

Sheltered, shallow and easy to enter matters more than the famous view when you just want a calm swim.

01
Coron, the white sand island

Malcapuya Island

A white sand Coron island with shallow, clear water that is the gentlest swim in the area on a settled day. The shallows run a long way out, which suits children and unhurried swimmers, and the tree line gives natural shade behind the sand. It is a longer boat crossing with basic facilities, so choose a calm forecast, take an early boat and bring water and snacks.

02
Coron, the sheltered cove

Banol Beach

A small, friendly cove on the Coron route with sheltered, gentle water and picnic huts you can rent for shade. It is calmest before or after the midday lunch rush, when the tour boats thin out and the cove settles. Carry a little cash for the entrance and hut fees, often bundled by tours, and pair it with Malcapuya for a full day of easy island swimming.

03
El Nido, the long beach

Nacpan Beach

A long golden beach north of El Nido that is gentlest at its southern headland, where the water is calmer and the food shacks are nearest. The open stretch can pick up a little surf when the wind is up, so the sheltered south end is the swim to aim for. Hire a van or shared transfer on the rough road, and read the sea before letting children in.

04
El Nido, the easy day

Las Cabanas Beach

The easy beach day from El Nido town, a short ride south to a curve of sand with gentle water on a calm morning and beach bars for shade. It is at its calmest early or in the mid afternoon, before the breeze and the sunset crowd build. Lively rather than secluded, but for a simple, gentle swim close to town it is the convenient choice.

05
Coron, the sandbar

Ditaytayan Island

A quieter Coron island with a long sandbar that grows at low tide into a wide, shallow wade, which is about as gentle as the sea gets here. It is around an hour and a half each way from town, so it is a full boat day, and a private boat makes for an easier pace. Check the tide for the longest shallow walk out, and bring your own shade and water.

06
El Nido, island hopping

Seven Commandos Beach

A white sand Bacuit Bay beach with soft, shallow water near the palms that is calm and gentle on the first morning boat. It fills up once the island hopping fleet arrives, so the calm window is early. Keep small children in the soft shallows by the trees and send stronger swimmers to the far end. The bar is simple and shade is patchy, so pack for the day.

The honest read

Who it suits and who should skip it

The calm water beaches above suit families and gentle swimmers who want a shallow, sheltered entry and are happy to reach it by boat or a rough road. The sheltered Coron islands are the standouts for a soft, clear swim, and the protected ends of the El Nido beaches are the easiest land based option. If your idea of calm is wading in slowly with a small child, these are the spots to aim for on a settled day.

Be clear eyed about the famous deep water sites. The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon at El Nido and the Twin Lagoon and Kayangan Lake at Coron are beautifully still, but they are deep water you swim or kayak across, often with no shallow entry, so they suit confident swimmers and older children rather than a toddler's paddle. They are extraordinary, but they are not a gentle wade.

The honest cautions are the season and the wind. The open coast roughens quickly when the breeze gets up, and the surf beach at Duli is livelier still, with a break that works in the windier months, so it is the wrong choice for a calm swim. The dry season from around late November to May brings the steadiest, calmest seas, while the wet months can turn the water choppy and cancel boat trips. Wherever you swim, watch the conditions, keep children close and in life vests on the water, and remember conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

The club layer

Where a sheltered base earns its keep

See Palawan beach clubs

Palawan does not run on the European daybed club model, so the calmest swimming days are built around a sheltered island or a quiet end of a beach rather than a club with a roped off lido. Around El Nido the scene is the simple beach bars and resort frontages at Las Cabanas and Nacpan, where you can take a shaded table near gentle water, while Coron's calm swims are reached on a boat trip rather than from a strip of clubs. We keep what is genuinely around in the Palawan directory, with minimum spends and amenities marked to be confirmed wherever they are not published, and we never invent a venue or a price. Tell us the area, the date and your party and we pass the enquiry to a beachfront or resort so they can confirm space and any minimum spend, and you can plan the calm island days around a settled base.

Good questions

Before you go

Where is the calmest water for swimming in Palawan?

The sheltered Coron islands have the gentlest swim, with shallow, clear water off Malcapuya and the protected cove at Banol. Near El Nido, the southern end of Nacpan and an early morning at Las Cabanas are the calmest land based options on a settled day.

Are the El Nido lagoons calm to swim in?

The water in the Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon is usually calm, but it is deep and you swim or kayak across it rather than wade in from a shallow beach. They are a wonderful swim for confident swimmers and older children, with life vests, but they are not a gentle paddle for toddlers.

Which Palawan beach has the gentlest entry for swimming?

Malcapuya off Coron has the gentlest entry, with shallow water that runs a long way out from white sand. Ditaytayan's low tide sandbar is shallower still, and Las Cabanas near El Nido is gentle on a calm morning before the breeze builds.

Is the sea in Palawan always calm?

No. The open coast roughens when the wind gets up, and the surf beach at Duli is livelier by design. The dry season from late November to May brings the steadiest seas, while the wet months can turn the water choppy and cancel boat trips, so calm is typical at the right time of year, never guaranteed.

Is Duli Beach good for a calm swim?

Not usually. Duli has a gentle surf break that works in the windier months from around November to March, so the water is livelier than the sheltered islands. For a calm swim, visit well outside surf season or choose Malcapuya, Banol or the south end of Nacpan instead.

When is the sea calmest in Palawan?

The dry season from around late November to May gives the calmest, clearest water and the most reliable boat trips, with the peak from December to April. The wet season from June to October brings rain and rougher seas, so the dry months are the safer bet for a gentle swim.
