Tortuga sells the one thing its rivals pay DJs to drown out, which is quiet. The club’s own site spells the policy out, no blaring music, no flashy distractions, and it builds the pitch instead on linen, bamboo, reeds moving in the wind and cocktails infused with herbs grown a few steps from the bar. The setting does the rest: the club stands behind the white sand of Plaka, the four kilometre stretch our Plaka beach guide calls the place where space still wins, with sunbeds under woven canopies and a restaurant a few steps up from the sand.

On the ranking in our Naxos club directory the party crown belongs to Agia Anna, and Tortuga makes no play for it. What it offers two people instead is a whole day shaped like an exhale, which on this island is the rarer luxury.

The look is what a design magazine would call tribal, and one that visited did: golden reeds shifting in the wind, bamboo walls, copper tones and a jumble of cushions that reads as arranged carelessness. From a bed under the canopies the day runs on Plaka time, a swim in water that shelves so gently you wade for a while before it means it, a plate of tacos or a club sandwich brought down to the sand, and the afternoon Meltemi arriving late enough to feel like a change of scene rather than a problem.

The kitchen is the second act and arguably the headline one. The documented plates skew to the sea, a ceviche of whatever was landed that day, tuna tartare, scallops with pumpkin and celeriac, an orzo with prawns that the reviewer called memorable, and the bar answers with the Naxian Side and the Tortuga Spritz. Dinner up from the beach, with the light going amber over open water, is the strongest argument for staying past six.

What should give you pause: the approach is a dirt road and the club sits attached to a small set of rooms, so this is barefoot boutique rather than polished resort, and with mains reaching 40 EUR the bill for two at dinner can outrun a day bed on most other Greek islands. Add the unpublished lounger rate, and the honest advice is to settle both numbers when you book rather than on the sand.

Plaka runs roughly four kilometres from Agia Anna toward Mikri Vigla, fine pale sand backed by dunes, cedar and juniper, with organised sections like Tortuga’s scattered thinly along it and long free stretches between them. From Naxos Town the drive down the west coast takes around a quarter of an hour by car or scooter, through Agia Anna and onto the unpaved Plaka road, with the club signed on the beach side. Buses run the coast in season and taxis know the stop. Reserving is old fashioned in the best way, a form on the club’s site, a phone call or an email, and for July and August evenings the table is the thing to secure, since dinner is when the room fills.
