The island is small and the sea is the whole point, so your timing should turn on water temperature, the wind and the crowds rather than on any worry about sunshine. Summer is reliably hot and dry, the shoulders are warm and far quieter, and winter is mild but firmly not a swimming season.
The detail that catches people out is twofold. First, the sea takes its time to warm, so a May or early June trip can deliver glorious sun and a bracing sea, while September often has the warmest water of the year. Second, the tramuntana, the strong north wind, can blow in any season and turns the exposed north coast choppy while the sheltered south stays calm, so the smart move on a windy day is simply to switch coasts. Add the summer car bans at the protected southwest calas and you have the three things worth planning around.

When each month earns its place
May. The island wakes up and the value is excellent. Days are warm and sunny, the calas are quiet, the coast path is glorious for walking and prices sit well below summer. The catch is the sea, still cool at around 18 degrees, so May suits walkers and sunbathers more than dedicated swimmers, and a few beach restaurants are only just opening.
June. One of the best months to come. The sea has warmed to a pleasant swim, the days are long, the south coast is calm and the full peak crowds, prices and summer car bans have not yet bitten hard. The calas are open and lively without being mobbed, which makes June a strong all round window and an easier one for families.
July. High summer, with the calmest south coast water, the warmest sea building and wall to wall sun. It is also the start of the crush, with full beaches, peak prices and the southwest car bans in force, so you reach Macarella and Turqueta by bus or on foot and you come early. Glorious conditions, at the busiest time.
August. The peak of the peak, hot and dry with the warmest sea of the year and the heaviest crowds, as much of Spain and Europe holidays at once. Book your stay well ahead, expect full calas and car bans, and take the first bus or the early coast path walk to enjoy the famous beaches before they fill. The reward is the warmest swimming of the year.
September. Arguably the sweet spot. The sea is at or near its warmest after a summer of heating, yet the peak crowds thin from early in the month and prices ease. You get August quality swimming with far more room, calmer calas and a gentler bill, which makes September the connoisseur's month for a Menorca beach trip.
October. A quiet, mild close to the season. The sea is still swimmable in the first half of the month and the calas are peaceful, with good walking weather and the chance of an early autumn storm or a windy spell. Many beach venues begin to close, so it is a lovely shoulder for those who want the coast almost to themselves and do not mind a cooler dip.

When is the sea warm enough to swim in Menorca?
Comfortable swimming runs from roughly June to October, with the sea at its warmest around 24 to 26 degrees in July, August and early September. May is swimmable for the keen, and by late October it is cooling fast. Outside that window the sea is bracing and most people come to walk the coast path rather than to swim.
What is the tramuntana wind in Menorca?
The tramuntana is the strong north wind that shapes the island and its beaches. When are the Menorca beach car parks closed?
